In his liner-notes to Hermann Max’s C.P.E Bach oratorio Die Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt Jesu the German musicologist Peter Wollny writes: "In the second half of the eighteenth century the German oratorio was marked by two characteristics. The tendency toward a highly individual depiction of emotions and the avoidance of dramatic operatic plots." Therefore composers turned away from stories from the Old Testament which were so successfully used, for instance, by Handel for his dramatic oratorios, and focused rather on the person of Jesus Christ. Bach's oratorio Die Israeliten in der Wüste seems to contradict this statement.

The composition of a ninth symphony has represented a symbolic challenge within the tradition for almost every composer after Beethoven. Andrzej Panufnik met this challenge with his most ambitious and large-scale work.
It was supposed to be a choral symphony, but Panufnik decided against this: ‘The Sinfonia di Speranza reflects my musical interpretation of the ideal of hope: within its notes I have tried to incorporate a spiritual message, an expression of my faith in mankind as well as my longing for racial and religious tolerance among all people’.

cpo’s Andrzej Panufnik Symphonic Works series has been met with great critical acclaim. The fifth volume in this series sees the young Polish conductor Lukasz Borowicz leading the larger forces of the Berlin Concert Orchestra in fine interpretations of the Polish-English composers’ popular Symphonies 7 and 8 and Concerto Festivo. Symphony No. 7 ‘Metasinfonia’ for organ, timpani and strings is dedicated to the Black Madonna of Czestochowa, the symbol of independence for Polish people. Symphony No. 8 ‘Votiva’ is one of Panufnik’s most-performed works.

During the 18th century it became common for Italian composers, whose principal instrument was not the keyboard, to produce collections of harpsichord music. It was, effectively, a chance to demonstrate versatility and bring one’s music to a wider audience, and Geminiani was one of several musicians to embrace this: hailed as one of the great violin virtuosos of his time, he also enjoyed a fruitful career as a composer, teacher and writer of music, and in 1743 published the first of his two contributions to the keyboard repertoire – Pièces de Clavecin.

The hard stuff saga continues with Brown Acid - The Eighth Trip! Yet again, Riding Easy has searched high and low to bring ten tracks of straight blue flame fire from the golden age of heaviness. As usual, these rare tracks have been carefully curated, analogically sourced, and fully licensed so one can listen guilt-free and save a lot of time and money tracking down the original copies. This Trip comes straight at ya with an all out attack, quite literally-Attack's "School Daze" kicks out the jams Detroit-style. White Rock will knock your stank-ass socks off with their 1972 burner "Please Don't Run Away". This 45 was privately released by this Houston-based band that reportedly played shows with Josefus, Stone Axe, and Purple Sun. Riverside's two-sider from 1974 rips from front to back. It's also exclusively available here and is virtually unknown. And that's just some of the stellar collection of rare singles featured here.

Three on the Trail, the Riders in the Sky's debut album, established their tongue-in-cheek tribute to cowboys and western music. Though the humor is piled on a little thicker here than on their later releases, the music is often quite good and they never deviated from this formula – slightly ironic covers, affectionate jokes and made-to-order originals on any of their subsequent records. They also rarely did it any better.

Of the of the earliest albums issued on Rounder in the early '70s, Things in Life is the first solo album by Don Stover, a virtuoso bluegrass banjo player who performed and recorded with the Lilly Brothers, Bill Monroe, Frank Wakefield, Doc Watson, and others. Although born and raised in West Virginia (he actually spent many years working in the coal mines), Stover moved to Boston in the '50s and became influential to a generation of bluegrass players there, most notably Bill Keith. This makes sense, as Stover often adds a subtle melodic element to his driving three-finger-Scruggs and two-finger-clawhammer styles.

Newgrass guitarist Tony Rice's work for Rounder Records is showcased on the mesmerizing Devlin. Pulling the best new acoustic tracks from his 1980 album, Mar West, and 1981's Still Inside, this compilation highlights Rice's fluid playing and progressive composition as he is backed by players like Sam Bush, Mike Marshall, Todd Phillips, John Reischman, and others. Alternately warm and crisp, comforting and energizing, his startlingly clean playing twirls and waltzes with the other instruments one stepping out while another comes to the spotlight, often culminating in tightly locked passages with interwoven harmonies. These 15 instrumentals are lyrical without words, poetic without stanzas, and a brilliant glimpse into the soul of one of progressive bluegrass' most inventive players.

Born out of a surreal experience and with strong devotion Black Flower takes you on a lucid voyage through the gardens of the Abyssinian afterlife. A highly remarkable place, far away from what you and I would call reality. It is a place where strange creatures and unfamiliar sounds merge into a harmony of the weird and the beautiful. It is said that these are the secret realms of the long past legendary ruler of Ethiopia, Sir Prester John. Some even claim that he composed these sounds as a way of ruling his ancient land. Whether this is fact or myth, nobody knows for sure…

Tenorist Bennie Wallace has a rock-solid group here – a quartet that features pianist Chick Corea hitting some of his more hard-edged acoustic modes – alongside the excellent bassist Eddie Gomez and Charles Mingus' drummer Dannie Richmond! The lineup is almost unusual, but works together wonderfully – with that strong sense of surprise that really can make a jazz album memorable – especially one like this, which might be initially understated in terms of appearance! Bennie's great in the setting – blowing with a sharper edge than on some other sets, and most tracks are nice and long too.
