This CD features two quite lovely piano quintets, beautifully played by a quartet of players from the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra with Clifford Curzon at the piano. The first piece is by Antonin Dvorak, who composed two piano quintets. The first of these is a relatively early work that Dvorak composed in 1872 when he was 31. The second of his quintets was composed only 15 years later and remains one of his most popular chamber works. The other piece on the CD is by César Franck and, along with his other major chamber works - the violin sonata and the string quartet - reminds the listener of the atmosphere of Franck's best known work, the symphony in d minor.

At the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the lied increasingly took on orchestral garb. The boundary with opera became almost impalpable. That is what Samuel Hasselhorn and Łukasz Borowicz demonstrate here, in a splendid programme mingling smiles and disillusionment, where some of the most characteristic orchestral lieder and operatic arias of this Austro-German ‘fin de siècle’ era blend perfectly together.

It was around 1825 that Louise Bertin, pupil of Reicha and friend of Berlioz, tackled the subject of Faust with all the energy and confidence of a young woman of twenty. She entirely exceeded the public's expectations and won over the critics with her daring. Colourful orchestration, charming cantabiles, vigorous choruses - everything seemed to promise the work would enter the repertory. But the closure of the Theatre-Italien after just three performances in 1831 decided otherwise, and the score languished in the vaults of the Bibliotheque Nationale de France for 190 years.

Petrushka (1911), along with The Firebird and The Rite of Spring , is one of the three innovative ballets commissioned by the impresario Sergei Diaghilev that were composed by Igor Stravinsky during his ‘Russian’ period. Nicknamed a man of a thousand faces by his contemporaries, Stravinsky revealed his neo-folklorist face in Petrushka ; in collaboration with the artist and librettist Alexandre Benois, he courageously brought a motley street crowd, complete with a magician and his puppets, merchants, gypsies, cabbies, and mummers, onto the ballet stage.

Johannes Brahms's soul shines through in his chamber music. Following in the footsteps of Mozart and Schubert, Brahms wrote two string quintets that rank among his greatest chamber music masterpieces. He took up this genre rather late in life, but in it he was able to express both the joy and the nostalgia he carried with him into his maturity. The Quintet in F major, Op. 88, held a special place in the composer's heart, and he considered it to be his finest work. A bucolic spirit and a gentle joie de vivre pervade the work, sometimes referred to as the 'spring quintet'. A majestic, pastoral first movement testifies to this cheerfulness, followed by a melancholy movement before the spirited finale. The Quintet in G major, Op. 111, also radiates vigour, expressing the composer's strength, nostalgia and exuberance.

The Piano Concerto No. 2 in B♭ major, Op. 83, by Johannes Brahms is separated by a gap of 22 years from his first piano concerto. Brahms began work on the piece in 1878 and completed it in 1881 while in Pressbaum near Vienna. It took him three years to work on this concerto, which indicates that he was always self-critical. He wrote to Clara Schumann: "I want to tell you that I have written a very small piano concerto with a very small and pretty scherzo." Ironically, he was describing a huge piece. This concerto is dedicated to his teacher, Eduard Marxsen. The public premiere of the concerto was given in Budapest on 9 November 1881, with Brahms as soloist and the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, and was an immediate success. He proceeded to perform the piece in many cities across Europe.

Every pianist in his dream plays Rachmaninoff. Playing Rachmaninoff is part of being a pianist. When I play Rachmaninoff, I may find even greater satisfaction in being part of the ongoing adventure of pianism. When I play Rachmaninoff, my fingers dream, not me. I have chosen one for the album from an uncapturable plethora of Preludes and Etude-images. My selection is purely an intuitive selection of a single illuminating moment. László Borbély

Rachmaninov's work is one of the emblematic works of the late Romantic period, with almost every aspect of the style. If one were to describe the work with a single simile, the conquest of infinity would come to mind. This can be interpreted equally as the work's emotional dimensions, its dazzling virtuosity, its composer's exacting demands, its consistent dramaturgical contrasts, its theatricality in the best sense and, of course, its captivating realisation of one of the most puzzling questions of Romanticism: glorification.

The Braunfels—a concerto in all but name—and Pfitzner make an apt pairing, two works dating from the twilight of German Romanticism. Both are heroically dispatched by Markus Becker, with Constantin Trinks and his Berlin Radio Symphony forces providing idiomatic support.

After the enormous success of the film and the award-winning CD playing Chopin, Nelson Freire presents this recording dedicated entirely to Robert Schumann. The very well chosen selection "reveals the nature of the composer with charm, passion and inspired ingenuity" (according to the CD booklet) and includes Carnaval op. 9, Papillons op. 2, Kinderszenen op. 15 and Arabeske op. 18. Most of Schumann's piano music was written during the years he was courting Clara, and is full of ardor and rich fantasies. Impetuous, Carnival is the musical description of a costume ball. This fantastic vein can also be found in the second piece, Butterflies, a series of short, almost volatile excerpts.

This is the fourth Romantic Piano Concerto album from Simon Callaghan, and that combination of talents which made his first three so successful—not least a flair for exploring the neglected byways of the Romantic repertoire, and the technique and musicianship to do them justice—proves just as compelling here.

Franz Lehár was known as “the last waltz king”, so it’s not surprising that his works in the medium bear similarities to those of the Strausses, qualities most readily heard in the suave, luxuriously appointed Wild Roses (or “Valse Boston”). However, Lehár also was a strongly original voice whose harmonic and textural experiments resulted in the striking Debussyian whole-tone scales toward the end of Altwiener Liebeswalzer (“Old Vienna Love Waltz”), or the Wagnerian snarling horns at the start of the Grützner Waltz.

This delightful disc of Viennese fluff contains some marvelous tunes, plenty of enticing waltz music, and heaps of what Gerard Hoffnung referred to in one memorable sketch as “flagellated cream”. The outstanding items are: Zigeunerfest, a ballet scene that doesn’t sound especially Gypsy-like (but who cares?); the extensive and really cute ballet music from the children’s play Peter and Paul in Schlaraffenland; A Tale from 1001 Nights that’s about as far from Rimsky-Korsakov as you can be while remaining on the same planet; the echt-Viennese Suite de Danse; and finally, an imaginatively scored if only marginally oriental-sounding Chinese Ballet Suite.
