A two-CD, 53-track set that includes for the first time ever the A and B side of every single the group released, all in their impossible-to-find-on-CD original U.S. mono single mixes. But this one-of-a-kind collection—which is remastered by Aaron Kannowski, the engineer responsible for our other acclaimed collections of singles by fellow Dunhill label acts The Grass Roots and Steppenwolf—doesn’t stop with The Mamas and the Papas’ singles. It also includes the solo single sides that group members Mama Cass Elliot, Denny Doherty and John Phillips cut for the Dunhill and ABC labels, again in their rare, original single mixes. Many of the solo singles and B-sides have never been on CD, let alone in their single mixes; plus, over the course of listening to this set (which clocks in at over 150 minutes), you’ll hear such legendary songs as “Monday, Monday,” “California Dreamin’,” “Creeque Alley,” “I Saw Her Again,” “Words of Love,” “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” “Glad to Be Unhappy,” “Dedicated to the One I Love,” and “It’s Getting Better” exactly as folks heard them over the radio back in those halcyon days.

Carl Maria von Weber’s overtures are cornerstone works of German Romanticism, famed for their lyrical melodies, dramatic tension, and brilliant orchestration.

Seiji Ozawa’s appointment as music director of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in 1970 was later vividly described by Barack Obama: “With his mop-top hairstyle, his turtleneck jumpers and his love beads, he almost looked like a Beatle”. This recording of Dvořák’s ‘From the New World’ Symphony from May 1975 was one of the last to be recorded by Philips in quadraphonic sound and has been remixed specifically for this reissue.

We continue our exploration of Paul Tortelier’s discography with these highlights of the repertoire: Haydn’s cello concertos, in this recording conducted by Jörg Faerber. It is the perfect setting for the warm tone of Tortelier’s cello, which also shines in the highly organic cadenzas - at once inventive and daring, yet entirely in keeping with the spirit of the original works.

Africa/Brass, released in 1961, was John Coltrane’s first album for Impulse! Records and a turning point in his recorded output. Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio and produced by Creed Taylor, the project expanded Coltrane’s working quartet into a large ensemble, pairing his searching tenor and soprano saxophone with dense, brass-heavy orchestrations by Cal Massey. Arrangements by Eric Dolphy and McCoy Tyner helped shape the album’s distinctive sound, weaving tuba, euphonium, French horns, and more into a powerful backdrop for Coltrane’s improvisations. With key contributions from trumpeters Booker Little and Freddie Hubbard, bassist Reggie Workman, drummer Elvin Jones, and others, Africa/Brass reframed the idea of a “big band.” One of the most important early Impulse! releases, Africa/Brass announced Coltrane’s arrival on the “house that Trane built” with radical clarity.
