When an artist takes an unexpected turn into new musical directions, it may cause stirring among fans. This is not the case of the increasingly global fan base of Indonesian progressive fusion maestro Dewa Budjana, who always come prepared to the perennial journeys through the world of their favored guitarist. For his 11th solo recording, and his 6th international release, Mahandini, Balinese guitarist brings his trademark melodic sound imbued of mystic and delicate southeast Asian music through even harder edged-progressive flights and raw contemporary rock stirrings.

[Their music] cleverly fuses all of these various musical elements together, expertly twisting various world music styles into the mix to produce a varied and unpredictable set of original material.”

Sherbet were Australia's most popular pop group of the 70s with 20 consecutive hit records and 17 album, accounting for 10 platinum and 14 gold disc awards. In 1969 the Sydney entertainment scene was almost totally geared towards satisfying the money-rich comfort-starved American Vietnam troops who came for official Rest And Recreation. Sydney's nightclubs gave them what they wanted - r&b, soul, funk, good-time rock - and these influences spilled over into the pop group Sherbet, formed without singer Daryl Braithwaite, but completed by his falsetto-capable vocals. They were the archetypical 70s girl fodder pop band - groomed hair, colorful satin stage outfits.

Cpo’s Herzogenberg series continues with the complete Violin Sonatas. With each new release it becomes increasingly apparent Herzogenberg was a multifaceted composer who – despite his closeness to Brahms (or rather because of it) – fought with admirable ambition to carve out his own independent style and tone. It has been shown that there were two sides of Herzogenberg: the young, wild Herzogenberg of his early years inspired by Wagner and Liszt, and the classicistic Herzogenberg of his later years, under the spell of his venerated Brahms. Signs of this duality are found in all the works for violin and piano on this release.

Actively supporting merengue as a form of propaganda for his regime, the Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo sponsored a radio station called La Voz Dominicana which hired many musicians during the mid-twentieth century. Trumpeter Hector de Leon was acknowledged as the ring-leader among jazz players at the station. His brother, alto saxophonist Choco de Leon, was also an adept jazzman, remembered for his brilliant instrumental versions of traditional merengues with extended jazz-influenced solos, upon which my offering is based.

Paul Rose is without doubt one of the most unique and talented guitarists in the world today. Fundamentally a rock guitarist, his extraordinary playing style touches on blues, country, jazz and folk, blended together into a style that is entirely his own. He was born in Newcastle and started playing at an early age. His natural gift shone through by the age of 16 with him playing regularly on the Newcastle live scene with some of the most popular local bands of the day. Hank Marvin was the first guitarist he saw play live in 1978.

“Three years of waiting has culminated into razor blade riffs and blistering speeds. The birth of death is upon us, we give you Necrogenesis!” says Nordjevel ringleader DezeptiCunt. There’s nothing hyperbolic in DezeptiCunt’s statement (except for that nom de guerre, natch), as Necrogenesis is a furious venture into the depths of speediest black metal put to digital tape, the likes of which owe homage to Dark Funeral, Marduk, and classic Immortal (when the Occulta bros. weren’t at each others’ intellectual property) in all their fast-as-fuck glory. Now, Nordjevel aren’t playing around either. In their ranks, they call to arms drummer Dominator — formerly of Dark Funeral — who might just be black metal’s best basher; guitarist Destructhor, the long-time, now-departed axeman (and sideman to the one and only Trey Azagthoth), from death metal legends Morbid Angel; vocalist Doedsadmiral, of Enepsigos fame, a rival to Mortuus’ take-no-prisoners style; and founder DezeptiCunt, formerly of long-standing black metallers Ragnarok. The reconfigured Nordjevel is a beast from the belly of a bigger beast.

The debut album by Watford-born Connie Constance - who has been carving out her own idiosynchratic, socially conscious take on soul-flecked indie since since her 2015 debut EP - has been a while coming. Released via AMF, English Rose is a record that feels entirely at home next to labelmates Loyle Carner and Marika Hackman, and is imprinted with a similar artistic freedom. Opening with the record's title track - an inventive spin on The Jam's "English Rose" - Constance revels in exploring of both national and personal identity across the record's eleven tracks. With tastes rooted across indie and hip hop, and collaborators including Mura Masa, Kwesi Darko and Dave Okum, she straddles a sound that never sits still for a moment and demands inclusivity, both literally and sonically.
