A telling thing about Robert Plant at his peak is how he would sneak on-stage with Rockpile and sing Elvis songs, or how Swan Song signed Dave Edmunds when his retro-rock was about the furthest thing from the monolithic Zeppelin of Physical Graffiti. Plant always harbored deep, abiding love for early rock & roll, a fact that was often obscured by his restlessness, too, a side that he indulged on his first two post-Zep solo albums – glistening, modern albums with a heavier debt to Robert Fripp than Little Richard. Two albums in, he switched tactics for the EP detour The Honeydrippers, Vol. 1, an unabashedly retro-rock project that hauled out five golden oldies from the pre-Beatles era and served them up authentically, or at least as authentic nostalgia…

On this wide-ranging set, guitarist Barry Levinson's debut, he is featured on all types of blues from lowdown to swinging. It is obvious, listening to these selections, that although Levenson is very much a bluesman, his roots are in jazz. He dedicates "Crawford's Grill" to guitarist Grant Green, uses the saxophonists liberally, and stretches out in his solos, sometimes hinting at Charlie Christian. The resulting music, which features Levenson with a strong rhythm section, should be of strong interest to collectors of both blues and blues-oriented jazz.

The box contains 10 CDs and offers reference shots of all the central works such as the Psalms of David, the Cantiones sacrae, the Resurrection History, the Little Sacred Concerts, Choral Music and last but not least the Passions. The partly unpublished recordings show the Dresden Kreuzchor at the height of its development.
