Antoni Wojnar, a student of professor Andrzej Branicki, decided to compose a modernist fairy tale - Nieczatek Dance. Her heroes are people who establish virtual contacts, which then result in close ties in the real world. The original use of human voice and ingeniously juxtaposed musical instruments with marimba at the forefront, makes the whole turn out to be light in reception for the listener.

This German battlefield drama, released on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the climactic 1943 defeat of the Nazi forces at Stalingrad in Russia, does not paint a pretty picture either of war itself or of the Germans fighting in that war. Out of hundreds of thousands of previously victorious German soldiers who took part in this most crucial battle of WWII, a mere six thousand ruined men survived. Today, the word "Stalingrad" is used by Germans to signify any particularly ruinous reversal or defeat. In the story, the lives of several German soldiers are followed as they are transformed from arrogant and victorious killers into demoralized cowards who will do anything at all in order to survive, usually without success. Due to a political climate of resurgent sympathy for the fascists at the time this film was made, is was particularly important to the filmmakers to show the soldiers as lacking any shred of military dignity or real courage. Thus, though this big budget, well-made film did well in Germany, its lack of any truly sympathetic characters made it less popular elsewhere.

Composer David Liptak releases a collection of chamber works, featuring the cycle,"Dove Songs," written for soprano Tony Arnold with pianist Alison D'Amato. Liptak, longtime composition professor at the Eastman School of Music, writes music that is expressively rich and poignantly lyrical. Rounding out the program are pieces for guitar, cello and piano, and violin and piano, featuring guitarist Dieter Hennings, cellist Steven Doane, violinist Renee Jolles, and pianists Margaret Kampmeier and Barry Snyder.

This two-fer release from Varèse Sarabande pairs two of the more influential and interesting horror soundtracks of the slasher-film era. Charles Bernstein's score to Wes Craven's 1985 slasher cult classic A Nightmare on Elm Street is very much a product of its time, eschewing traditional orchestral approaches while employing state-of-the-art synthesizers and sound effects to convey the horror of Craven's suburban dreamscapes. Bernstein's unsettling cues utilize technology to strong effect, creating sinister atmospheres that effortlessly communicate the threat posed by the film's ghoulish antagonist, Freddy Krueger. The inorganic, dehumanized tones produced by the composer's synthesizers underscore the narrative's detachment from waking reality. That said, taken on its own terms the music is more than a little dated. While the best Hollywood scores boast a timelessness that transcends their origins, A Nightmare on Elm Street is immediately recognizable as a product of the mid-'80s, and whether that's a positive or a negative is left to the listener to determine.

A gritty roots and blues band with infectious grooves, compelling original songs, and sizzling improvisations. Kevin Bilchik Band offers an eclectic mash-up of Americana styles. The five-piece combo, led by singer/songwriter Kevin Bilchik, brings together smoky vocals, deep-pocket rhythms, funky saxophone riffs and jazz-infused guitar solos. Born in a city famous for blues music–St. Louis, Missouri–Bilchik explored a wide variety of musical terrain before settling into the musical heritage that his city is known for. The Kevin Bilchik Band came together over time, starting with a two-piece rhythm section, featuring well traveled percussionist R. Scott Bryan and stalwart bassist Eric Warren.

This little-known French band from Paris was formed in 1994 by bassist S. Fred, drummer Didier Pegues and keyboardist Philippe Benabes. In September of the same year Pascal Mocaer joins on bass and Fred switches permanently on vocals and keyboards, while Eric Savarino will complete the first line-up on guitars. The following year ADN had a good live activity, performing next to Galaad, Arkham and Cafeine, while in 1996 a sixth member was added, it was female violin player Elise Bruckert. Around this time the band members were feeling mature enough to compose material for their debut album, which was delayed several times due to the numerous line-up changes.

Ken Senior, the man behind this Evolution project, is definitely an underground name of the modern prog scene.Around mid-90's, when he was already collaborating with Bjorn Lynne as well as Steve McBabe of Elegant Simplicity, he found this one-man project, under which he covered ''White mountain'' for the Genesis' tribute release ''The River of Constant Change''. The albums starts off in a more simple mood, being typical melodic Neo Progressive Rock, characterized by dramatic melodies and a hidden grandiosity, becoming though more complex as it unfolds. This is superb and highly melodic Neo Prog with a number of great compositions, which deserves some more fame. Highly recommended from Retro Prog fans to followers of a more modern approach in their prog music.

This Concord release was tenor saxophonist Harold Land's first as a leader in a decade, although he had co-led many sessions in the interim with vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson. Starting in 1975, Land and trumpeter Blue Mitchell worked regularly in a quintet up until Mitchell's death in 1979, but this album was just about their only joint recording. With keyboardist Kirk Lightsey, bassist Reggie Johnson, and drummer Al "Tootie" Heath offering solid support, the group performs four originals by Land (including the title cut and "Rapture"), two songs by Lightsey, and Mitchell's "Blue Silver." Fusion may have been the dominant force at the time, but despite Lightsey doubling on electric piano, this is an excellent example of 1977 hard bop.
