Reya of Titan is a concept album that tells the futuristic story of a woman who leaves Earth to do asteroid mining only to end up marooned on Titan, the moon of Saturn. The band makes creative use of multiple keyboards, guitars, bass, drums and female vocals to evoke both the human experience of being at the edge of man's domain and the extremes of space. Gekko Projekt influences include 1970s-era prog bands such as Genesis, UK and Yes, with a modern twist. US quartet Gekko Projekt was formed in 2010, and consist of Vance Gloster (keyboards), Peter Matuchniak (guitars), Rick Meadows (bass) and Alan Smith (drums). All four experienced hands with a shared passion for many types of music and with a particular soft spot for progressive rock.

There was virtually no prior planning for this meeting between organist Jimmy McGriff and altoist Hank Crawford, but none was needed. The veterans had already recorded four prior albums together, so they simply jammed through blues, ballads and a few basic originals without any difficulty; Crawford could play this material blindfolded. McGriff sets the grooves expertly with his foot-pedal basswork, with assistance from guitarist Rodney Jones and drummer Jesse Hameen. The overall result is an enthusiastic session of foot-tapping music. No real surprises occur, but lovers of hard-swinging organ combos have nothing to complain about.

Boasting a big-name producer and appearances from a handful of actual mainstream rock stars, Brick by Brick was a remarkably successful attempt (critically, if not commercially) to create an "event album" around Iggy Pop, so the follow-up came as a surprise – American Caesar was cut fast and loose in a New Orleans studio, with Malcolm Burn (hardly known for his work in hard rock) in the producer's chair and Pop's road band backing him up…

Finnish Folk Metal Superstars KORPIKLAANI released their current studio album titled »Kulkija« ("Wanderer") on September 7th, 2018 through Nuclear Blast Records. But before the band presents some of the new tunes on their forthcoming »Wayfarers & Warriors Tour 2019« with TURISAS and TROLLFEST, they will release a special tour edition, which doesn't only include the regular songs, but also a bonus CD titled »Beer Beer«, which will only be available in this physical package. The aforementioned disc includes 14 versions of KORPIKLAANI's iconic song 'Beer Beer', graced by the likes of Christopher Bowes (ALESTORM), Steve "Zetro" Souza (EXODUS), Andreas "Gerre" Geremia (TANKARD), Jesper Anastasiadis (TURISAS), TROLLFEST and many more of their friends' bands and musicians.

Throughout thrash metal’s almost 40 years of history beginning in the early 1980s, many bands have passed through the genre’s doors enjoying varying amounts of success. Some broke through the glass ceiling and popularized the genre on an undeniable scale: Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, as well as later bands Pantera and Machine Head borrowing influence from thrash before weaving it into their own respective musical templates. Flotsam & Jetsam have been there since the very beginning, and have more of a history in thrash than most of their contemporaries, leading them to release a new album ‘The End of Chaos’ at the beginning of 2019…

This soundtrack to the popular 1982 animated film based on the acclaimed children's book by Peter Beagle was scored by songwriter/composer Jimmy Webb ("Wichita Lineman," "MacArthur Park") and features performances from the soft rock duo America. The score itself, an appropriately somber and sentimental blend of fairy tale motifs and dark, Wagnerian cues, reflects the story's achingly beautiful tale of a unicorn who attempts to overthrow a maniacal king determined to rid the world of the magical creatures, while the songs are far more creative, daring, and eloquent than all of the cookie-cutter balladry that would eventually replace their type in future animated films. Like Watership Down, The Hobbit, and even Robert Altman's live action, Harry Nilsson-scored Popeye, this hard to find soundtrack is a gem from another age.

At the time of these recordings, John Lewis was still in the process of developing the unique concept of MJQ as a jazz chamber group, for which he often scored even the bass and drum parts. Every track of this pioneering early phase exemplifies how Lewis, to quote Andre Francis, turned four musicians into 'a sensitive instrument which vibrates in the same universe of sound, achieving a communion unique in the world of jazz.'

Long considered a second-rate Schumann in the pantheon of the Great German Composers, listeners these days want to embrace the greatness of Felix Mendelssohn. They want to hear ecstatically joyful Italian Symphonies, passionately compelling Scottish Symphonies, luminously hilarious Midsummer Night's Dream Overtures, brilliantly blissful Violin Concertos, and soulfully expressive yet deeply intellectual string quartets so they can raise Mendelssohn to the front ranks of the Great German Composers.

Unfortunately, these are not those performances. The Henschel Quartet is a fine ensemble with plenty of energy and power and it tears into Mendelssohn with a strong tone and firm control. But too often it soars over the surface of the music, leaving the soulful depths untouched. In these recordings of the E flat major and F minor String Quartets, the Henschel pushes Mendelssohn's opening Allegros and forces his closing Molto allegro and Allegro molto, missing the tension of the music in the drive to the double bar. In the Andante espressivo and the Adagio, the Henschel takes the tempos a bit too quick and stays a little ahead of the beat, missing the intensity of the music in its need to keep the music moving. For soulfully expressive and deeply intellectual recordings of Mendelssohn's string quartets, try the Budapest Quartet of the Alban Berg Quartet, or, for something more authentic, the Mosaique Quartet. Arte Nova's sound is too loud and too forward.

This one is a bit special. Last we heard from Seigen, he was introducing us to his very jazz-influenced take on Japanese New Age music. On the follow up to that epic debut, The Green Chinese Table, we find Seigen dividing his time up between recording sessions in Tokyo and New York City. It’s impossible to stress how that meeting of western and eastern minds really seasons the conditions that make this record sound like it does.
