    The award-winning world music jazz ensemble Quadro Nuevo and the Münchner Rundfunkorchester are reforming traditional German folk songs and giving them a new instrumental garb full of musical sophistication.     I don’t know what it is with the Swedish knack for good melody that is both catchy and engaging at the same time. They just seem to get it. Could be the stuff they eat over there, smorgasbord or just those meatballs everybody flocks to IKEA stores for.
    Simon Stålhamre and his Small Feet band and their sophomore album With Psychic Powers are no exception, just yet another welcome addition to the list of Swedish pop/rock melodists that seem to have sucked up all the essential elements that make the music both easy on the ear, and yet still like “Masquerade” on this album, sound so painstakingly built up just to come up with that ‘simplicity’ effect. Always hard to do.

    Motown's series of Commodores two-fers paired "Hot on the Tracks" with "In the Pocket" and, in doing so, spanned a rather drastic breach in the group's evolution. Lionel Richie and company had recorded Hot on the Tracks just as they were hitting their stride in the mid-'70s, fresh off the burgeoning, yet still relatively modest, success of Caught in the Act and Movin' On. It's an excellent album, surely one of the group's best. On the other hand, the Commodores had recorded In the Pocket in 1981, after five steady years of chart-topping quiet storm ballads and a gradual shift from loose funk to stiff disco. Furthermore, by the time the Commodores recorded In the Pocket, Richie had become the group's de facto hitmaker and was on the brink of jumping ship for an incredibly popular solo career.

    Their late-'70s image as white-suited disco kings has earned them cultural-icon status for all the wrong reasons. In their 4 decade recording career, the Bee Gees have built a singularly impressive body of work encompassing the eccentric art-pop that first made the trio unlikely pop stars in the '60s and the R&B-inflected, falsetto-laced dance pop of their Saturday Night Fever comeback. This 4 CD, 74 song set may be a mite too even-handed historically (thus giving short shrift to the group's prolific '60's output), but it presents a representative sampling of the ups and downs of the group, and includes all of the relevant hits and a generous assortment of rare items. This 4-CD set is very good, but it also isn't quite all it could have been, mostly because the makers were hamstrung by the peculiar nature of the ' audience.
