The three Italian choral works on this album cast new light on pre-existing musical material. Corrado Margutti’s Missa Lorca fuses the words of Federico Garcia Lorca with an evocation of Monteverdi’s polyphonic textures to create fascinating sounds, as the two movements from the Mass reveal. Pizzetti’s Messa di Requiem, the first of his great choral compositions, offers a wealth of expressive detail notably the use of Gregorian chant in music of huge range and richness. Lorenzo Donati’s Sicut Cervus fittingly concludes this selection as it threads music from Palestrina into his piece illuminating the past with vivid new colours.

Programming 18 arias by 15 composers, it covers three centuries of opera in Italian, French and German, setting mainstream works beside relative rarities, and rediscovering Étienne Méhul's Ariodant, first heard in 1799.

For her first album on Linn soprano Cassandra Wright has recorded a programme that offers a musical exploration of various facets of human nature. In the Twilight encompasses composers as varied as Barber, Joseph Marx, Debussy, Grieg and Korngold. In Cassandra’s own words, ‘Samuel Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915, which was the initial inspiration for this collection of songs, evokes the innocence and wonder of childhood through its enchanting description of a carefree summer evening. The exploration of human longing is reflected in two richly coloured works written by the 23-year-old Korngold, who was profoundly impacted by the First World War and his forbidden romance with a young actress. Continuing towards the more hopeful and optimistic nature of night and dreams, we explore uplifting songs by Marx, Grieg and Debussy.’ This luminous album, with pianist Harry Rylance, is part of the Royal Academy of Music Bicentenary Series.

Antonio Rosetti, who was almost always mentioned in the same breath as Mozart and Haydn by his contemporaries, composed over 40 symphonies, about six dozen solo concertos and chamber music and a considerable number of sacred vocal works. Ranked amongst his greatest achievements in the latter genre are the large-scale passion oratorio "Jesus in Gethsemane" and the "Hallelujah" cantata. Both show the virtuoso mastery of a whole array of musical techniques. Thanks to their melodic ingenuity, sophisticated harmony, a distinctive sense of proportion and the, as always, accomplished manipulation of orchestral tones, both of these late works are counted among Rosetti's most meaningful creations. There is no better conductor for this disc of Rosseti masterpieces than Johannes Moesus who is president of the International Rosetti Society.

The Eighth Book of Madrigals, subdivided into a substantial series of vocal and instrumental partbooks, contains some of Monteverdi’s greatest music. In this sumptuous collection the material is carefully arranged by category into madrigals of war, love and those for the stage, with a wide array of human passions and compositional styles. This is the first recording to present Book Eight in its original, uncut form, also incorporating instrumental sinfonias and dances by Biagio Marini (1594-1663) to round off Monteverdi’s design. In keeping with seventeenth-century practice, the madrigals are performed entirely by male voices, including a boy soprano in the role of Cupid.

Troubadours songs; laude to the Virgin and estampies from trecento mingle with Sephardic lullabies and folksongs collected in Italy. They tell the stories of simple men and women of the Mediterranean world. Languages and music have survived to the din of the wars, religious conquests, political dominations between North and South… This record is an intimate compilation which raises from the old village song telling the cycle of life, the redemption sought with the Virgin, the curtly love of the Countess of Die, Tarentella or the famous separdic lullaby Nani, Nani for the beloved son…« Ever since antiquity, the shores of the Mediterranean have assembled men and women who share a cultural heritage with multiple resonances. (religious and cultural : christians, jews, arabs, languages : castillan, occitan, florentin, napolitain, sarde…).

Exploding all stereotypes about diva rivalry, Nadine Sierra and Pretty Yende, two of today’s leading operatic prima donnas and close friends, took great delight in sharing the limelight at a sold-out Paris Philharmonie on 6 March 2023. The two sopranos’ voices complement each other beautifully in a selection of arias and duets that – taken from the Italian, French and American repertoire – combine operatic tradition with 20th-century flair. The duo were accompanied by conductor Giacomo Sagripanti at the helm of Les Frivolités Parisiennes. The digital album version features 5 bonus tracks, in which the singers, accompanied by conductor Giacomo Sagripanti, brought a touch of cinematic magic to the stage, “Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz being one of the songs they include.

Other recent King's Singers' recordings on this label have reaffirmed the ensemble's credentials as compelling advocates of contemporary music. Here, only the most hardhearted of early music purists could fail to find the infectious cocktail of popular and religious Spanish music–largely 16th century–going to their heads, even if the King's Singers add the occasional theatrical embellishment. The music (much of it by "Anon") is organized into five categories, among them "fire" and "water" (with the alternative implications of ardor and alcohol).
