Containing a quintet of solo albums from the legendary British guitarist. Hank Marvin first achieved fame as a member of The Shadows. The band backed vocalist Cliff Richard before breaking away and having hits of their own. Marvin's distinct style has influenced generations of guitarists all over the world. While his solo work is not as well-known, this box gathers together the five albums he released under his own name from 1982 to 1995: Words And Music, All Alone With Friends, Into The Light, Heartbeat and Hank Plays Cliff.

The performances are uniformally excellent – a splendid cast, with a marvellously affecting Fiordiligi in Charlotte Margiono, Thomas Hampson as superb as ever as Don Alfonso, and a particularly beautifully sung Ferrando. Deon van der Walt - it is worth hearing. The Chorus of De Nederlandse Opera have very little to do but their reputation does precede them. The true consistent glory is in the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Not a group that does a lot of operatic work, they nonetheless have no difficulty in bringing all the polish and intense musicianship for which the orchestra is famous. Under the direction of Harnoncourt, with whom the RCO have worked frequently over the years, this recording shows that the Amsterdammers continue to deserve their reputation as one of the world’s very greatest ensembles.

Rebecca Stewart together with the vocal ensemble Seconda Pract!ca explores the music of Josquin Desprez and his contemporaries Brumel and Willaert, commemorating the 500th anniversary of his death. The central piece of this recording is the famous Missa Mater patris by Josquin. Founded in 2012 by international musicians gathered in The Netherlands for their studies, Seconda Prat!ca has become one of the leading ensembles of the new generation of early music performers. The ensemble’s main goal is to bridge the gaps between performers and audience, revitalizing western musical heritage by bringing it back to a shared living experience.

Italian pop star Alice (also known as Alice Visconti) was born Carla Bissi in Forli, Italy in 1954. She began her career as a piano-playing singer/songwriter in 1971, gaining more recognition in 1981 when she won the Sanremo Music Festival. A series of albums, singles, and tours unfolded over the next several decades and saw Alice branch out in unexpected stylistic directions, moving through phases of classical, jazz, ambient, and electronic experimentation. Perpetually embracing new forms of sound, Alice released albums as diverse as 1999's God Is My DJ (which found her interpreting spiritual works by Popol Vuh and Gavin Bryars, among others) and 2012's Samsara, which found her in a cinematic folk-pop mood with some new agey synth touches.

As she has so eloquently accomplished over the past 25 years, acclaimed singer-songwriter Mary Gauthier has used her art once again to traverse the uncharted waters of the past few years. "I'm the kind of songwriter who writes what I see in the world right now," she affirms. Thankfully, amid dark storms of pandemic loss, she found and followed the beacon of new love: Her gift to us, the powerful Dark Enough to See the Stars, collects ten sparkling jewels of Gauthier songcraft reflecting both love and loss. On Dark Enough to See the Stars, she mourns recent devastating losses: the deaths of John Prine, David Olney, Nanci Griffith, and her beloved friend Betsy. But she also sings open-heartedly of love. All ten tracks prove Gauthier's belief, as stated in Saved by a Song, that "songs can bring us a deep understanding of each other and ourselves and open the heart to love." Deep emotion resonates throughout Dark Enough to See the Stars. "It kicks off with three love songs," says Gauthier. "Somewhere along the work I've done in therapy through art and 32 years of recovery, I've somehow stabilized enough to be in a relationship that works - and I want to express that in these songs." The joyous triad - the catchy "Fall Apart World," the lilting ballad "Amsterdam," and gospel-tinged "Thank God for You" - each punctuated with Danny Mitchell's evocative keyboards - comes alive with poetic imagery.

Album entitled "Super Gasoline Blues" by guitarist Roberto Ciotti recorded at the Orthophonic studio in Rome in 1978 for the Cramps label. The line-up that accompanied the Italian bluesman was made up of: Enzo Pietroapoli (double bass), Giampaolo Ascolese (drums) and Susanna De Vivo (voice).
Roberto Ciotti (1953-2013) was an Italian blues musician, composer and guitarist. Ciotti was born in Rome. He began playing the guitar at the age of 12. From 1970 to 1972 he was a member of the jazz band Blue Morning, then he started a career as a sideman, collaborating with Chet Baker, Francesco De Gregori and Edoardo Bennato, among others.

In Jade Warrior's second album for Island Records, atmosphere takes center stage over melody, and jam sessions supplant structure. The record consists of a single composition. Parts one and two were needed because it was released in pre-CD days and the song took up both sides of the LP, identifying the entire album under a single title – an unwise strategy. "Waves" has no recurring theme; it opens with a Brian Eno-influenced ambient passage and meanders from there…

Croatian Baroque Ensemble is the most prominent Croatian ensemble specializing in historically informed interpretation of early music on original instruments and their replicas. The ensemble was founded in 1999 and consists of esteemed musicians from the younger generation – led by director of the ensemble, renowned violinist Laura Vadjon.

Orchestra of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. This translates as the Florence May Festival Orchestra (Florence being the city and May being the month).The orchestra was founded in 1928 by Vittorio Gui, as the Stabile Orchestrale Fiorentina, with its home the Teatro Comunale di Firenze. It took its current name in 1933, when the Festival was instituted. After Gui, Mario Rossi became music director in 1937. Then, after the war, Bruno Bartoletti was appointed to the post. From 1969-1981, the position was given to Riccardo Muti, then to Zubin Mehta, who became Principal conductor from 1985, and then to Fabio Luisi, who became Principal conductor from 2018 to 2019. Zubin Mehta was made Honorary Conductor for life in 2006.

AKA's 1970 debut album Do What You Like combines earthy, heavily buzzing, and fuzzed-out rock monuments in the vein of classic UK and US bands with a few tunes in the Continental European heavy rock style, with big chorus lines and a bit of a pop thrown in for good measure, plus great melodic ballads and pop tunes in their native Indonesian language. The Indonesian band carried their trademark sound through whole recording career, including Reflection, their second album, originally released in 1971 and reissued here for the first time. Different melodies and titles but the same wild crossover of styles, with a change between each and every song. Lush epic ballads, powerful heavy rock, a great beat tune with a flowery feel that drags you straight to the dancehall, and another epic and utterly heavy blues rock and psych freak-out…

Abbey Lincoln was in her late fifties at the time of this 1987 session in Paris, but she was showing little wear on her voice, aside for a slightly more pronounced vibrato. Joining her for this session is Archie Shepp on soprano and tenor saxophones, trumpeter Roy Burrowes, pianist Hilton Ruiz, bassist Jack Gregg, and drummer Freddie Waits. The sparse liner notes give no background as to how this session or choice of musicians came about, and at times there is such an informal air that one would think that this was a run-through prior to a record date or concert. The extended workout of Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady" lives up to its title, with Lincoln, Shepp (on soprano sax), Burrowes (on muted trumpet), and Ruiz shining in their respective solos…

Mats Bergström has taken guitar performance into so many directions and with such skill, it's a challenge to simply define his career. He is a highly successful soloist, chamber player, accompanist, and arranger, and in most of these roles he has struck out rather imaginative paths. In the chamber realm he has played in duos, trios, and larger ensembles, and in such unusual combinations as vocalist, double bass, and guitar. He has done much accompaniment, particularly with vocal soloists like mezzo-soprano Malena Ernman and soprano Annika Skoglund. As an arranger he has, through Mats Bergström Performance Editions, fashioned numerous renditions for guitar and other instruments of works by J.S. and C.P.E. Bach, Handel, Mozart, Bizet, Grieg, Nielsen, and many others. Naturally, his repertory is inclusive of music by these, as well as by contemporary composers like Reich, Takemitsu, Åke Parmerud, and Anders Hillborg. And Bergström has also performed crossover fare by Duke Ellington, Jerome Kern, Michel Legrand, and others.

Triana is the most legendary progressive rockband in Spain. Formed in 1974, the band were known for blending elements of progressive rock and flamenco music to make a style known as Andalusian rock or flamenco rock. "Quiero Contarte" is a triple album paying homage to Triana featuring, on the one hand a selection of the most emblematic songs from the 7 recorded albums by the legendary Andalusian rock band on two of the CDs. On the other, a CD featuring the album "Tributo a Jesús de la Rosa". This CD, produced by Gonzalo García-Pelayo, features 17 cover versions of their songs and played by famous modern spanish musicians (andaluz bands Alameda & Medina Azahara among them).
