Looking like something reissued by Akarma (but creeping out on Polydor), Kin Ping Meh's self-titled 1971 effort is dripping with Deep Purple-esque organ and guitar, as well as a healthy dose of CSN&Y vocal harmonies. Like many B-list or C-list rock outfits of the period, Kin Ping Meh were adept, but lacking that extra ooomph that would have pulled them out of obscurity. The rockin' numbers were by-the-book chuggers, save for the somewhat exceptional "Everything" and though they did delve into proggy, string-laden sprawlers on occasion ("My Dove"), most of the album's content is simply adequate and marginally derivative of the heavier hitting acts of the early '70s.

If you were looking to find Deep Purple's spiritual home, then two locations would vie for top billing. The first would be Hanwell Community Centre, stuck in the midst of a huge between the wars London housing estate. The second would be the altogether more affluent and spectacularly sited town of Montreux, on the shores of Lake Geneva. In the former, Deep Purple assembled in mid-1969, to audition Ian Gillan and Roger Glover and begin work on "Deep Purple In Rock". But it was in Montreux, just two years later, that they wrote and recorded "Machine Head", one of the most influential rock albums of all time.

Argent's back catalog remains in a parlous state 20 years on from the group's peak, with great swathes of the repertoire unavailable on CD, and even some of the band's best-known and loved recordings are still chained up in a vault somewhere. Thankfully, this two-fer rendering of their first two albums is an exception to that sorry rule, as the group's transformation from the logical successors to the Zombies into one of the finest prog bands of the early '70s is traced out across 19 songs, almost any of which would be a shoo-in for some future "best-of" Argent compilation. It is true, of course, that Argent was prone to excess on occasion – what is remarkable is just how naturally the band approached that state, as songs build on their own momentum toward peaks that even the best oiled of the group's peers audibly struggled to approach.

Nektar's debut album was one of their finest releases, saturated with abstract psychedelia and a wonderful science-fiction motif that is magnified through the rigorous but dazzling Mellotron of Allan Freeman and Roye Albrighton's nomadic guitar playing. Throughout Journey's 13 cuts, Nektar introduced their own sort of instrumental surrealism that radiated from both the vocals and from the intermingling of the haphazard drum and string work. With the synthesizer churning and boiling in front of Howden's percussive attack and Mick Brockett's "liquid lights," tracks like "Astronaut's Nightmare," "It's All in the Mind," and both "Dream Nebula" cuts teeter back and forth from mind-numbing, laid-back melodies to excitable, open-ended excursions of fantastical progressive rock…

If ever there were a record that both fit perfectly and stood outside the CTI Records' stable sound, it is Sugar by Stanley Turrentine. Recorded in 1970, only three tracks appear on the original album (on the reissue there's a bonus live version of the title track, which nearly outshines the original and is 50 percent longer). Turrentine, a veteran of the soul-jazz scene since the '50s, was accompanied by a who's who of groove players, including guitarist George Benson, Lonnie Liston Smith on electric piano, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, bassist Ron Carter, organist Butch Cornell, and drummer Billy Kaye, among others.

Formerly known as Lemon Pie, this group was formed by singer Ledissez and keyboardist Guerin in 68, Ergo Sum released only one album in 71. This album was the first one on Laurent Thibault's new label Theleme and was recorded at the famous Herouville studios. Singing in English, Ledissez's voice was certainly an acquired taste (reminding of Family's Chapman), but the group's many other assets certainly made up for that: Meynet's violin and Guerin's flute and the frequent use of percussions graced their blending of rock and jazz, but not really being a jazz-rock group either. The group then recorded a single with a fairly different line-up and the last concerts saw François Bréant and Perru (ex-Cruciferus and future solo artist), JM Truong (pre-Zao) and Marc Bertaux. Bréant and Perru will then form Nemo (not to be confused with the 90's French symphonic group though) for one album.

Yet another gem from the classic Italian 70's prog scene and represents a highly expressive rock album with excellent and focused vocals and harmony. I Giganti essentially play a highly melodic / symphonic prog with some nicely accentuated breakouts. Although the vocals and lyrics are the centered focus on this album, we are still treated to loads of symphonic keyboard work with loads of piano and even some mellotron. Guitar work is also worth making note of and is a nice combination of acoustic and electric work. Songs are highly expressive The concept of this album is centered around the mob (mafia) and is told from the perspective of a prisoner in a series of interviews. At times "Terra In Bocca" actually transforms into a musical dream sequence and delivers some simply gorgeous melodies.

Every once in a while something comes along and knocks you off your feet ..to say that any recordings from the 1971 Warriors Tour are as rare as hens teeth .. when this lady Helen contacted me to say that she had a tape of Lincoln recorded by her Mum ..i tried not to get too excited as I ( unfairly ) imagined it to be pretty rough . The only other recording we have from this tour is Newcatle which was a challenge to rescue . The story of Lincoln may have come to an abrupt end there …as i played it on my Tape to PC machine and it was indeed very muffled and almost unlistenable ….i was deflated but not surprised .. i sent Helen the file and she came right back to me saying ‘hold on i listened to it recently and its no way near as bad as this !

Recorded by students at the start of their summer holidays, Oberon’s self-financed, 99-copies-only 1971 album “A Midsummer’s Night Dream” is one of the rarest, most expensive artefacts to emerge from the primordial soup of the early Seventies British underground scene. More importantly, it also boasts a reputation as one of the most vital, with one commentator suggesting that “at least one of the few copies pressed should be preserved in the British Museum”.
Having featured tracks from the album on our heavily-praised 3-CD British underground folk collections Dust On The Nettles and Sumer Is Icumen In, the Grapefruit label now celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of the making of “A Midsummer’s Night Dream” by issuing the album in its entirety…

Although ELO quickly became Jeff Lynne's baby, it was launched as a collaboration between Lynne and his bandmates in the Move, multi-instrumentalist Roy Wood, and drummer Bev Bevan. Indeed, the label on ELO's first album reads "Move Enterprises Ltd. presents the services of the Electric Light Orchestra," and most histories claim that the initial idea for the spin-off group combining rock and classical music was Wood's, not Lynne's. Wood and Lynne split the songwriting duties on Electric Light Orchestra, much as they did on late-period Move albums, but it seems like their visions of what ELO was were widely divergent. Wood's songs are clearly more classically influenced, with the string and horn sections driving the songs rather than merely coloring them, as they do on Lynne's tunes.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the release of their debut album, and to meet fans' repeated requests, prog rock icons Gentle Giant are releasing their first four albums as special vinyl editions. Their second album, Acquiring The Taste, was originally released in the summer of 1971, and was produced by Tony Visconti, like their debut album. The tracks on the album are less blues and soul inspired, and more experimental and varied; in the words of the band, more 'unique, adventurous and fascinating'.

One Way… Or Another (1971) was the second studio outing to feature the incipient incarnation of supergroup Cactus, comprised of Vanilla Fudge rhythm section Carmine Appice (drums) and Tim Bogert (bass), as well as former Amboy Dukes lead vocalist Rusty Day (vocals/mouth harp), and Jim McCarty (guitar) from Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels and the Buddy Miles Express. Even as their debut was ostensibly rawer, they retained the same amp'ed-up electric blues reminiscent of early Grand Funk Railroad and Foghat. The more polished outcome heard on their sophomore effort is undoubtedly the direct result of assistance from recording engineer extraordinaire Eddie Kramer and their upgraded digs at the recently completed Electric Lady Studios, which they inhabited shortly after the passing of the facilities' owner, Jimi Hendrix.

The Landlord is a 1970 American comedy-drama film directed by Hal Ashby, adapted by Bill Gunn from the 1966 novel by Kristin Hunter. The film stars Beau Bridges in the lead role of a privileged and ignorant white man who selfishly becomes landlord of an inner-city tenement, unaware that the people he is responsible for are low-income, streetwise residents. Also in the cast are Lee Grant, Diana Sands, Pearl Bailey, and Louis Gossett Jr. The film was Ashby's directorial debut.
