Formed in NYC in the mid-'70s by David Byrne, Chris Franz, Tina Weymouth, and ex-Modern Lover Jerry Harrison, Talking Heads soared out of their humble CBGB's beginnings to become Rock and Roll Hall of Famers and one of the most adventurous and influential bands ever. The onstage energy that propelled their rise to fame was documented in the 1982 double-LP set THE NAME OF THIS BAND IS TALKING HEADS, now available on CD for the first time. Following them through several early evolutions from '77-'81, this live gem - a 1982 Top 40 Billboard Album- is a riveting portrait of a stellar band on the rise. For its CD debut it's been expanded with over 30 minutes of rare and mostly previously unreleased bonus material.

An exciting archive release from Whitesnake, showing the band in an evolutional phase which would soon seen them reach the incredible success of their 1987 self-titled release. Live In 84 Back To The Bone showcases the fabulous line-up of David Coverdale, John Sykes, Cozy Powell and Neil Murray live at the Super Rock Festival in Japan. Also included, as a very special bonus, the last live performance of Jon Lord with the band, recorded in Sweden. [Lord would reunite with Deep Purple shortly after this performance.[/quote]

By the 1950s, Roy Acuff's crown was slipping. He wasn't the star that he had been, but he was still making great records as this collection of ultra-rare sides cut between 1953 and 1958 for Capitol, Decca and MGM shows. Roy was adapting to the changing face of country music, but still making music that was true to his original vision. He re-made some of his biggest hits, including Great Speckled Bird, Lonely Mound Of Clay, Wreck on The Highway, and Precious Jewel. He also recorded some surprisingly good new songs including Goodbye Mister Brown (with Kitty Wells) and I Closed My Heart's Door, which was as powerful a performance as any he ever made.

"Nexus" is Argent's most progressive album. The pop indulgences of "Hold your head up" and "God gave rock and roll to you" are largely gone, to be replaced by much more structured and serious compositions. From the synthesiser driven three part instrumental opener "The coming of Kohoutek" through the dramatic "Music from the spheres" to the slightly more traditional Argent on side 2 of the LP, there's a coherence throughout. Almost inevitably, the album was not as successful as "In deep" or indeed "All together now". There were no obvious singles, the band relying on the fan base they had acquired through their previous singles, to stay with them. It appears the lack of success for the album was a factor in Russ Ballard's subsequent departure, which in turn led to Argent (the band) rapidly becoming a spent force. "Nexus" however gave a wonderful illustration of how things could have been.

Leaving his conch shells - and more offbeat ideas - home this time, Steve Turre's motive for this release was to honor the fountainhead of bop (and thus, modern jazz) trombone, J.J. Johnson, who had tragically taken his own life in 2001 in the face of a terminal illness. In doing so, Turre loads his front line with nothing but trombones - as many as six, but usually fewer. Besides himself, the other trombonists on the album are Robin Eubanks, Steve Davis, Andre Hayward, Douglas Purviance, and New York Philharmonic principal trombonist Joe Alessi (who also plays good jazz). It's a fairly conservative recording by Turre's standards, with an emphasis mostly on the straight-ahead bop that Johnson championed. Indeed, many of the duo-trombone charts sound like latter-day echoes of the famous K and J.J. (Kai Winding/J.J. Johnson) records of the 1950s and '60s…

Colombia’s thriving cultural heritage derives from Spanish, African and Amerindian elements. The rich blend of colour and rhythmic vitality found in the synthesis of dance forms and styles, notably the sharply accented Andean bambuco (‘pursuit dance’), the flowing, graceful pasillo and the traditional, rhythmic guabina, recurs throughout this programme. Poignant expressiveness and intricate virtuosity are features of Montaña’s two Suites. Saboya’s Suite Ernestina includes characteristically South American melodies and rhythms, while Caribbean rhythmic patterns are recreated in González’s Preludio.

There's an old saying that one is only as good as the people with whom one collaborates. Judging by the list of musical contributors to Hector Zazou's Sahara Blue, Zazou is quite good indeed. Among many others, those adding their own touch to Zazou's album include Bill Laswell, Dead Can Dance, John Cale, David Sylvian, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Tim Simenon. Zazou devised the album as a mix of musical styles set to lyrics/vocals taken from the pen of Arthur Rimbaud. While it might appear like a pretentious undertaking on paper, the album is a cohesive slice of eclectic music-making. Jazzy spoken word songs such as "Ophelie" intermingle with throbbing dance-oriented numbers like "I'll Strangle You" and quiet, peaceful piano-based meditations such as "Harar et les Gallas." Dead Can Dance duo Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard work their particular magic on "Youth," exchanging vocals, and on "Black Stream," where Perry's dark, somber synth weeps around Gerrard's stunning vocals and yang chin. Zazou himself mostly stays in the background, providing production and electronic sounds, allowing the players to showcase their abilities.

Among the protagonists of the recorder revival, Hans Ulrich Staeps deserves pride of place. This album allows a full appreciation of Staeps’ multifaceted talent as a composer, of his stylistic flexibility and of his capability to write beautiful music for players of all levels. The pieces performed here include practically all of his published works for recorder and piano. His output for the recorder was created between 1951 and 1988; among the observable influences are certainly those of the French Impressionists and of his teacher Hindemith, though hints of the jazz idiom are also discernible.

Born in Liège, Matheo Romero was in the service of the Spanish court; his secular works show that he had perfectly assimilated the characteristics of his adopted country’s music. Composed at the very beginning of the baroque era, these romances, folias and canciones also show the influence of the Italian madrigal style and of its effects; just as in the madrigals proper, Nature is the prime inspiration for the texts’ professions of love and amorous deceptions. For the first time, the talented Argentinean conductor Leonardo García-Alarcón brings together his two ensembles: the voices of Capella Mediterranea and Ens. Clematis. This combination revives the tradition of Spanish chapels around the reign of Charles V in Madrid. A meeting of the Capilla Flamenca and Capilla Spagnola.
