“I Like ‘Em Big and Stupid” was the debut single by comedian and singer Julie Brown. It was self-released by Brown in 1983 in 12-inch and 7-inch vinyl formats. The song is a 1980s-style pop song with comedic lyrics about the protagonist’s desire for a handsome, hunky muscle-stud who is not very bright (or as she sings, “Superman with a lobotomy”). The 12-inch version contained an extended dance mix and the B-side on all releases, “The Homecoming Queen’s Got a Gun”, was played on The Dr. Demento Show, and received airplay on Top 40 and Modern Rock stations around the US in 1984. Both songs appeared that year on Brown’s next release, Goddess in Progress.

The typical DMB concert during the Summer of 2014 was a little experimental. The band played two sets, the first featuring a cast of rotating acoustic performances of songs both old and new. The second set was a full fledged electric rock show. This set from the band’s stop in Tampa features unique versions of favorites from Snow Outside to I’ll Back You Up. We also get to hear some bowed bass in #27 and great percussion from Carter in the song Sweet. The second set features all bangers with the soaring vocals of So Right and the jazz explorations of Seek Up among the highlights. The evening ends with a great version of Good Good Time followed by You and Me.

External Combustion – the second album and first as band leader of the Dirty Knobs – is proof that lightning can strike twice. His first record, Wreckless Abandon, was released in November 2020 to a great reception, gaining attention from Broken Record, Vulture, WTF with Marc Maron podcast, LA Times, Rolling Stone, American Songwriter, Billboard and many more. The Dirty Knobs made External Combustion in three weeks over the summer of 2021, and "The band became this spontaneous type of combustion”, Campbell recalled, recounting how the band became more intuitive the longer they played. Campbell claims he was never offered a solo deal in his four decades with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, despite also writing and producing for artists like Roy Orbison and Don Henley. "I wouldn't have known what to do with it," he adds quickly. "I was Tom's partner. Lyrics and singing – he could always do it much better. But I was writing and recording more music than Tom could deal with. That's when I got the Dirty Knobs, which gave me a chance to try singing. So I started woodshedding. And then when my life changed (with Petty's death in October 2017) it was, 'Time to do this now.'"

Goodfellas[Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] Review by Steven McDonald
Following in the footsteps of many, the soundtrack for Martin Scorcese's Goodfellas (based on Nicholas Pileggi's Wiseguy) uses period music for definition – in this case, however, music from the '40s through the early '70s is utilized. The selections themselves are all good – well chosen and not overused songs that range from "Rags to Riches," sung by Tony Bennett, to "Layla (Piano Exit)" from Derek & the Dominos, passing through "Speedo" from the Cadillacs, "Life Is But a Dream" from the Harptones, "Baby I Love You" from Aretha Franklin (in fine voice here), and "Sunshine of Your Love" from Cream. It's a little on the short side at 38 minutes. Other than that, it's an even dozen songs, from good to great, and particular care seems to have been taken with the remastering – standouts in that respect are the opening "Rags to Riches," the Franklin and Cream numbers, and Muddy Waters' stomping, snorting rendition of "Mannish Boy." One of the better oldies-oriented film scores.

"Chicago VI" is the 5th studio album by American rock band Chicago and was released in 1973. It is the first album to feature percussionist Laudir de Oliveira, who would become a full-fledged member of the band for Chicago VIII. Chicago VI was another commercial success, spending five weeks at #1 in the US. The band would not chart in the UK at all until 1976's Chicago X. The album was mixed and released in both stereo and quadraphonic. The original U.S. CD release (Columbia CK #32400) was mastered for CD by Joe Gastwirt. In 2002, Chicago VI was remastered and reissued by Rhino Records, with two bonus tracks: a Terry Kath demo called "Beyond All Our Sorrows", and a recording of Al Green's "Tired of Being Alone", taken from the 1973 TV special, Chicago in the Rockies.

When "Betty Wright Live" was first released in 1978, there was some speculation on whether or not it was really a live album or simply a studio recording with canned applause. To be sure, the applause doesn't sound authentic, and the original LP's liner notes listed neither a recording date nor a location. But whether it was recorded on stage or in the studio, this album (reissued on CD in 1991) provides much evidence of Wright's vitality as a singer.

Teena Marie had the distinction for many years of being not only one of the rare white acts on Motown, but also one of its greatest female soul singers. She hedged her bets by doing lots of uptempo funk and dance-flavored tunes, but when she did ballads, even overproduced ones, her strong, soaring voice had the kind of earthy, direct quality attainable only by someone who really had soul. While Motown's various special lines and concept packages are often ripoffs, in this case it's certainly worth getting The Marie package, especially because many of her albums didn't sell all that well and are now hard to find.

Risky Business Review by Steven McDonald
A fairly good cross-section of the soundtrack music for this film (starring Tom Cruise in a breakout performance), with TD's pulsating cues on five tracks balanced well against a selection of rock, blues and funk numbers (by Bob Seger, Jeff Beck, Prince and Muddy Waters, among others). The standout cut is "Love on a Real Train."

THE FIRST TIME…FOR THE LAST TIME is collection of demos a then-unknown Shania Twain recorded in the late 1980s and early 1990s for Canadian label Limelight Records. Written in collaboration with Los Angeles producer Paul Sabu, the songs here are not country music, but rather well-crafted, energetically performed pop/rock fare. Though the production is often dated (particularly on the cruise-ship-dance-party-sounding “For the Love of Him” and the Laura Branigan-esque “It’s Alright), the tracks definitely offer repeated glimpses of Twain’s superstar potential. There are even a few country-tinged numbers (“Bite My Lip,” “Luv Eyes”) that presage Twain and Mutt Lange’s multi-platinum Nashville/arena rock hybrids. Though recordings contained herein have been made available in several other forms, this package goes the extra mile by offering both the original recordings and significantly re-mixed/remastered versions on two different discs.
