By the end of the 1970s, the original triumvirate of hard rock heroes Zeppelin, Purple and Sabbath had either graduated to the arenas of the world, or even split up, whilst the second wave of British heavy rockers, including UFO, Motörhead and Judas Priest, were beginning to fill theatres across the land. Punk exploded in 1976 and 1977, and the DIY ethos that sprang up in its wake soon influenced the grassroots metal bands who had yet to leave their local bars and clubs. Often independently released, some of the bands in this set never made more than one now highly prized and collectable 45 or one-off EP.

Krzysztof Eugeniusz Penderecki, born 23 November 1933) is a Polish composer and conductor. The Guardian has called him Poland's greatest living composer. Among his best known works are Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima, Symphony No. 3, his St. Luke Passion, Polish Requiem, Anaklasis and Utrenja. Penderecki composed four operas, eight symphonies and other orchestral pieces, a variety of instrumental concertos, choral settings of mainly religious texts, as well as chamber and instrumental works.

Resurrected from the ashes of one of the most influential death metal bands of all time, Nocturnus, NOCTURNUS AD was initiated by Nocturnus founder/mastermind/death metal legend Mike Browning (also Morbid Angel co-founder) to continue the path that was laid down, almost 29 years later, by the legendary Florida death metal band’s seminal 1990 album “The Key”, an album recognized as one of the most important death metal albums of all time. “Paradox” is the direct and proper follow-up and follows the aftermath of the events that went down in “The Key”. On a musical plane, “Paradox’s” otherworldly, technical dark atmospheric occult death metal blueprint harnesses and carries on the energy of “The Key” and the overall cult death metal vibe of the early ‘90s in the singular forward-thinking way that Nocturnus exhibited. Musically overwhelming and pretty much a sonic attack on the senses from every angle, “Paradox” is sci-fi death metal reclaiming its throne back to its originators.

Takatoshi Naitoh’s 2001 album, "Birds in Paradise" intersects radiant, organic synth landscapes with deep field recordings of bird calls. The bird sounds gently descend the listener into a comfortable and low vantage point where the birds can be heard echoing through the vast land. They will prelude each synthetic segment and lead into the electronic counterpart quite nicely. Remarkable are the synth portions of this album. Not unlike a classical composition, Naitoh is showing us an aural movie with his fluid synthesizers arrangements. His music speaks of hesitancy, caution, relief, majestic conquest, mystical exploration, longing etc.

One of the most popular and widely recognized female country singers of her era, Crystal Gayle supported her trademark, nearly floor-length hair with a supple voice, a flair for ballads, and a crossover-friendly country-pop style that netted her the occasional mainstream hit. Gayle was born Brenda Gail Webb in Paintsville, KY, in 1951; her older sister was future superstar Loretta Lynn, though Lynn had already left home by the time Brenda was born.
