Genre: Punk / Label: Cherry Red Records

One of the most important bands of the second wave of U.K. punk, the U.K. Subs had been on the scene since the early days of British punk. But as the first wave of bands began to crumble, the U.K. Subs just got tougher and faster, and slowly rose to fame as many of their peers were burning out, finally breaking out in 1979 with the album that established their template, Another Kind of Blues. The group's signature sound was stripped-down and anthemic British punk tunes, not unlike the early Clash but with less gingerbread and a heavier attack, coupled with ranting vocals that merged anger with dark humor.

Outi Tarkiainen writes of her new release with the Norrbotten Big Band: "During my year as composer in residence with the Norrbotten Big Band in 2017, I wrote eight compositions that strongly capture my voice as a composer while at the same time focusing from many angles - maybe some of them surprising - on this immensely adaptable jazz orchestra. I decided to call the set Unpainted Portraits, my aim being to paint musical portraits of people and prospects past, present and future. Literature, and especially poetry, has always been a source of inspiration for me in my work, and many of my new portraits are dedicated to writers I admire: the early 20th-century English modernist Virginia Woolf, the Finnish visionary playwright Minna Canth, and the contemporary Sámi poetess Rauni Magga Lukkari now living in Tromsø, Norway.

Didier Squiban has been a loyal companion of the Orchester National de Bretagne for over twenty years. After the recording of his first two symphonies, the Symphonie Bretagne and the Symphonie Iroise, we were able to complete the symphonic trilogy imagined by Didier Squiban by recording in 2021, the Symphonie du Ponant, in the company of great performers such as Baptiste Trotignon on the piano and Airelle Besson on trumpet. La Symphonie du Ponant looks away, towards the seven islands off Brittany, towards the setting sun, towards the high seas… This symphony composed of Breton melodies is sublimated by improvisations proposed by masters of the genre. An orchestration full of colors, magnified thanks to the richness of a symphony orchestra and the direction of the Morlaisian Ariane Matiakh.

Foxtrot is where Genesis began to pull all of its varied inspirations into a cohesive sound - which doesn't necessarily mean that the album is streamlined, for this is a group that always was grandiose even when they were cohesive, or even when they rocked, which they truly do for the first time here. Indeed, the startling thing about the opening "Watcher of the Skies" is that it's the first time that Genesis attacked like a rock band, playing with a visceral power. There's might and majesty here, and it, along with "Get 'Em Out by Friday," is the truest sign that Genesis has grown muscle without abandoning the whimsy. Certainly, they've rarely sounded as fantastical or odd as they do on the epic 22-minute closer "Supper's Ready," a nearly side-long suite that remains one of the group's signature moments…

This is a collection of songs from 1988-1993. A joint effort by Rhys Fulber and former Front Line Assembly bandmate Bill Leeb, the successful project Delerium has produced some of the most unusual sounds to emanate from Vancouver, Canada. With Leeb responsible for finding samples, writing lyrics, creating basslines, sequencing, and overseeing the project and Fulber handling the sampling and programming and using a chords/string pad to craft additional melodies and arrangements, the group's sound is a dance-inspiring mix of electronics and post-industrial attitude.

Song-Stylist Jonathan Karrant’s new album entitled “Eclectic” is just that, a collection of popular songs written from the 1940’s through the 2010’s. It includes favorites from the Great American Songbook born out of Broadway musicals and Hollywood films, as well as songs not usually found in the jazz genre, cleverly creating new standards out of songs by Smokey Robinson, James Taylor and Macy Gray. A highlight track is a song called Love Dance written by Ivan Lins. Jonathan’s recording of the song is a beautifully sensual duet with Grammy nominated singer Jane Monheit.

Since the release of her captivating debut, 2009’s Dangerous Liaisons, female jazz vocalist Sylvia Brooks has displayed a gift for inhabiting different personas, with a subspecialty in film-noir inspired femmes fatale. On her fourth jazz music album, Signature, she embraces the most challenging role of all, defining herself with a set of beautifully crafted original songs. Her evocative lyrics and emotionally direct delivery imbue the music with hard-won authenticity. Whether looking back with wry affection on her walk-on-the-wild-side youth or lamenting a lost love, Brooks brings bracing honesty and poise to the material. Like on her previous album, 2017’s The Arrangement, she’s keeping company with the Southland’s most creative accompanists.

There is a long tradition of Electroacoustic music in Finland beginning in the 1950’s with the experimentation of tape music. Finland’s first electronic musical instrument the "Sähkövalopiano" or "Electric Light Piano" was built before this in 1894. It was constructed in the Polytechnic Institute (now Aalto University) in Helsinki. Finland also has a tradition of blending archaic traditional music in the contemporary music scene. The Kalevala tradition for example dates back centuries before today and the instruments associated with it were used to accompany shepherds on their lonely watches, or village dance parties bringing joy and sense of belonging to communities. These musical traditions have been revitalised by being used in a modern context. Even with the emerging of new technologies to open new horizons for composing music, the avant garde movement and a plethora of new and continuously evolving music genres, the very root of Finnish Kalevala tradition has stayed alive and has been brought to the present, not only in its original form, but also being integrated into electroacoustic realm by the musicians willing to experiment.

Having lived, performed, developed, and matured in New York City for over 20 years, Dust Settles, my sixth album as a leader, is a cumulative representation of the years I’ve spent becoming a seasoned bandleader, composer, drummer, and record label entrepreneur. I cannot be prouder of the music we made on this session as this album features some of the very best jazz musicians in the world today. This is a dream band for me with Stacy Dillard on tenor and soprano saxophones, Peter Bernstein on guitar, Miki Yamanaka piano, and Yasushi Nakamura bass.

The music here was written for performance during Holy Week at the splendid Catholic court of Dresden in 1722. The example of Dresden stirred Johann Sebastian Bach to some of his most Italianate flights of opera-like music, and the composer of the Holy Week responsories heard here, the Bohemian-born Jan Dismas Zelenka (whom Bach himself admired), had an experimental, progressive spirit in much of his music. All the more of a surprise, then, to find that these pieces are written in an almost antique style. Each of the three Matins services is divided into three Nocturns, each of which is provided with three pairs of readings or lessons (given in chant) and three responsories, polyphonically set for a small choir (the two-singers-to-a-part forces heard here were apparently typical), with orchestral strings mostly doubling the vocal lines.

Because Daniel Barenboim is so closely associated with the German orchestral repertoire, conducting the music of English composer Edward Elgar may seem a bit of a byway, though his explorations in previous Decca recordings of the Cello Concerto in E minor with Alisa Weilerstein, and the Symphony No. 2 in E flat major with the Staatskapelle Berlin, have yielded exceptional results. This performance of the Symphony No. 1 in A flat major (1908), again with the Staatskapelle Berlin, is a powerful meditation on the human drama, and while it lacks a specific program, the music evokes a mixture of bittersweet nostalgia and darker forebodings.

Born in Chongqing 19 years before he made this Chopin recording, Yundi Li is too old to qualify as a prodigy, and he's absurdly young to be labelled a "great master", but that's indubitably what he is. He has all the poetry and authority of Evgeny Kissin, but no whiff of that Russian's aggressive self-projection. When he won the Warsaw Competition at 18, he announced that he wanted to become "the next Zimerman", but the real Zimerman turned down his request to study with him, saying there was nothing more he could teach him. This CD demonstrates the point to perfection: the only flaw one might detect–over-pedalling in a Nocturne–proves to be a carefully calculated effect in one of a series of gorgeously fresh renderings of hackneyed favourites. Li opens with the third sonata, establishing a big golden tone from the outset; he points up the architecture of this episodic work with leisurely assurance, and if his tempi seem leisurely even in the fast movements, that is because he brings out every detail with pellucid clarity. How did such quintessentially romantic playing emerge from the heart of China? Don't even ask: just marvel, and enjoy.
