Communicating construction and expression is a central aspect in Alfred Huber's musical oeuvre. Themes, rhythms and their execution determine the musical development, ensuring the music's linguistic quality. Alfred Huber's music is composed with an addressee in mind: it wants to be understood and comprehended. Nevertheless, the composer uses his musical material freely and away from any traditional ties, consistently coming up with new solutions for creating musical orders and systems. In works such as Phi, Op. 27, or Pi, Op. 32, he extracts formats and proportions from numbers and numerical series. In Impossibile, Op. 20, poetic models inform his composition, while in the Piano Trio, Op. 35, he utilises an almost classical approach in his thematic development - a tribute to Ludwig van Beethoven, "the hero of my youth" (Alfred Huber).

Passionate about the music of his own country, Peter Friis Johansson has commissioned new works as well as worked toward the unearthing of overlooked masterpieces of Swedish music. This recording presents the fruits of these efforts: one older, unfinished work with a completion by Johansson himself, the two others commissions made on his initiative. All three concertos were premiered between 2017 and 2020.

This recording was made under the direction of Reinbert de Leeuw in December 2019, two months before his death. A few weeks before that, he had called Thomas Dieltjens, artistic director of Het Collectief, to tell him: ‘Since our concert in mid-July 2019 at the Saintes Festival, I’ve been haunted by Das Lied von der Erde". I’m totally under its spell, and every day I discover new things in this masterpiece by Mahler. Wouldn’t it be a dream if we could record this music with the outstanding group of instrumentalists and soloists we had in Saintes? And preferably as soon as possible?’ Reinbert himself made the arrangement for fifteen instrumentalists and two soloists and invested all his remaining strength in the recording of this music, which encompasses the whole of life, from the freshness of birth to the moment of farewell… A testamentary album, with the moving mezzo-soprano Lucile Richardot, which gives us an opportunity to pay tribute to one of the key ambassadors of twentieth-century music.

On his first solo clavichord album, Alexander Gergelyfi creates an exceptionally colorful and at the same time sensual portrait of his home country Austria. Exquisite music from the 17th and 18th centuries is presented on what is probably the oldest surviving Austrian clavichord. The elegant "Admont" clavichord serves Alexander Gergelyfi as a gateway to hidden sounds and as a companion between dances. Simple yet affecting, keen, and fine.Born in Linz on the Danube in Austria, Alexander Gergelyfi studied harpsichord, historical keyboard instruments and early music performance practice with August Humer, Brett Leighton (Linz/Austria), Eva Maria Pollerus, Michael Hell (Graz/Austria), Aline Zylberajch (Strasbourg/France), Volkhardt Preuss and Menno van Delft (Hamburg/Germany).As a soloist and chamber and orchestra musician, he appears regularly with il Gusto Barocco, Hofkapelle Graz, L'Orfeo Baroque Orchestra, Barucco, recreationBAROCK, the Viennese early music collective opia and Ensemble Verbotene Frucht.

Huw Watkins’ song cycle Echo, composed for soprano Ruby Hughes and premiered in 2017 at Carnegie Hall, is at the centre of this artfully crafted recital. Setting texts by five different poets, the cycle is a work centred on melancholy – on transience, remembrance, and in the final song a numbed cry of inconceivable loss. As such it permeates the entire programme, adding a new and unexpected depth to that which precedes as well as follows.

A programme which bridges Debussy’s first work for piano (the Danse bohémienne, from 1880) and his last (Les soirs illuminés par l’ardeur du charbon, from 1917). Steven Osborne is equally responsive to the very different musical moods of both.

After their exciting interpretations of Haydn, Beethoven and Schubert, the Chiaroscuro Quartet now turns to Mozart’s Prussian Quartets, his last compositions for this formation. These quartets were written for Friedrich Wilhelm II, King of Prussia and amateur cellist, and offer that instrument an unusually prominent role. The first of the three was composed fairly quickly, in June 1789, but the next two were not completed until the following year, and in the end Mozart’s plan for a set of six came to nothing.

The ‘Prelude’ here is again a song arrangement – ‘Songs my mother taught me’, in which ( joined by the pianist Juho Pohjonen) Vogler pours out smooth, warm tone with unindulgent restraint…The focus, however, is on two of Dvořák’s great chamber works, in performances that conjure up the spirit of the Moritzburg Festival, where Vogler is director.

One of the leading young soloists to emerge from Scandinavia in recent years, noted particularly for her superb musical expression, as well as her well-developed virtuosity and musicality. Young Norwegian violinist, Vilde Frang brings together a diverse, yet complimentary selection of sonatas for her second EMI Classics release. The youthful, spirited Grieg: Violin Sonata No.1 in F Major, Op. 8 and Richard Strauss: Violin Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 18 are paired with Bartók’s technically challenging, musically complex Sonata for Solo Violin, BB 124, Sz. 117. Frang frequently performs the later, which Bartók composed as an homage to Bach, with the Strauss in concert. Vilde is joined by pianist Michail Lifits for this recording.

The programme and its execution are equally superb, as Carrai and Zhu roll out one world-premiere recording after another…Infusing this project are two ingredients rare in glitzy big-name recordings: the soloists’ long friendship (Zhu studied with Carrai) and their trust in non-canonical music.

The Fall's first post-Craig Scanlon album also introduced Julia Nagle, who took over keyboards from the departing Dave Bush and also contributed some guitar. Brix Smith and Karl Burns covered the rest of the guitar, and while Scanlon is missed, the end results work well enough. The crisp live edge to the recording is attractive, but oddly enough leaves a lot of space in the mix – Mark E. Smith and Nagle's keyboards have pride of place along with Steven Hanley's bass guitar (give an ear to "Das Vulture Ans Ein Nutter-Wain" for an example).

Recognized worldwide as "The First Lady of Song," Ella Fitzgerald is arguably the finest female jazz vocalist of all time. Blessed with a highly resonant voice, wide range, and near-perfect elocution, Fitzgerald also possessed a deft sense of swing, and with her brilliant scat technique, could hold her own against any of her instrumental contemporaries. She came to initial popularity as a member of drummer Chick Webb's band in the 1930s, scoring a hit with a "A-Tisket, A-Tasket," before ascending to wide acclaim in the 1940s with Jazz at the Philharmonic and Dizzy Gillespie's Big Band, and issuing landmark performances like "Flying Home" and "How High the Moon."
