This latest version of Gluck’s masterpiece is something of a double hybrid: its starting point is the Berlioz version, which combines what Berlioz regarded as the best of the Italian original and the French revision (and using a contralto Orpheus), and then it is modified further, with a number of reorderings and some music restored, as well as revised orchestration. It isn’t very ‘authentic’, in terms of Gluck No. 1, Gluck No. 2 or Berlioz, but that of course doesn’t much matter as long as it works.

Charpentier's Te Deum written in the bright key of D major features a four-part choir and eight soloists. It displays the composer's total command of religious music combined with a gift for melodic writing. Brilliant and majestic, yet profound, this Te Deum (Charpentier wrote four Te deums) was probably composed to celebrate the victory at Steinkerque in August 1692 during the wars against the countries of the League of Augsburg. [The struggle would eventually be in vain; and Strasburg, and the Palatine succession lost to France].

This CD is a continuation of the set of Handel organ concertos recorded in the Oud-Katholieke Kerk of The Hague in September 1975. These were originally recorded in quadraphonic sound with the engineers achieving a splendid natural sound with plenty of presence. The masterful performances sound authentic indeed. These are the only multi-channel recordings of this music and highly recommended.

Sort of… Recorded in 1972 and scheduled for release the following year, All American Music was put on hold and went unissued, save for a few copies that were released on 8-Track. It took a 1980 UK compilation to collect all of the known Flatlanders material, with a now out-of-print German collection unearthing one more.

After experimenting with synthesizers and a pop sound on his solo debut, Don Henley hits the mark on his sophomore release, Building the Perfect Beast. This album established Henley as an artist in his own right after many successful years with the Eagles, as it spawned numerous hits. While the songs seem crafted for pop radio, it's hard to fault him for choosing arrangements that would get his messages to the masses. Unlike most pop in the 1980s, however, Henley had deep intellectual themes layered beneath the synthesizer sounds and crisp production. In the opening song "Boys of Summer," he talks about trying to recapture the past while knowing that things will never be the same. Henley has a gift for writing about the heart and soul of America and for mixing his love for the country and small-town life ("Sunset Grill") with cynicism about government ("All She Wants to Do Is Dance") and modernization ("Month of Sundays"). Although the politics and the sound of the album make the decade of release easy to place, Henley's earnest delivery and universal messages give many of the tracks a timeless feel, which is no small feat. This is Henley's most consistent album, and it is the place to start for those wanting to sample his solo work.

Nei primi tre cd, partendo dal ragazzo magrolino che nel 1974 cantava "Re di speranza" si arriverà fino all'uomo dai capelli bianchi che oggi sono. Questo cammino ripercorre gli anni trascorsi, passo dopo passo, attraverso i brani più celebri ed eseguiti della mia opera, ma andando anche a riscoprire alcune incisioni rare, magari meno conosciute, ma altrettanto amate da me e da chi negli anni ha camminato con me. Il percorso si chiude con il "Kyrie (Signore abbi pietà)", mai pubblicato fino ad oggi su supporto fisico, e con "Piccolo David", un brano del tutto inedito. Il quarto CD è dedicato alla musica di "Futuro Antico", la collana che ho creato e coltivato negli anni per celebrare la musica del periodo medievale e rinascimentale, offrendo una reinterpretazione personale ma filologicamente accurata dei capolavori di quell'epoca. Andy Bull is an Australian alt-pop/piano rock singer-songwriter, based in Sydney, New South Wales. He is best known for the single "Dog," from his 2010 Phantom Pains EP, a duet with former Australian Idol contestant Lisa Mitchell, as well as his prolific Australian touring.

John Cale was never very kind to his solo debut, Vintage Violence. When it was released in early 1970, Cale had been out of The Velvet Underground for less than two years. He wanted to prove he could be the songwriter, the person penning the words and melodies behind which a band could work. “I was masked on Vintage Violence,” he wrote much later. “You’re not really seeing the personality.” Indeed, Cale’s personality as a polyglot seemingly interested in everything emerged more and more on his next two solo albums, his only two for Reprise: 1972’s bracing and exploratory classical sojourn, The Academy in Peril, and 1973’s masterclass in anxious but accessible songcraft, Paris 1919. By reissuing both records in tandem, it reaffirms the artistic fearlessness Cale then fostered at the edge of 30, when all of music seemed like one inviting playpen.
