Owen Rees leads early-music consort Contrapunctus alongside The Choir of The Queen's College, Oxford in performances of John Taverner's masterwork, the Missa Gloria tibi trinitas. A virtuosic work, it has pride of place in the Forrest-Heyther partbooks (in the Bodleian Library in Oxford), which it has been variously argued originated at Cardinal College or at the Chapel Royal. It might well have been heard on Trinity Sunday in the chapel of Cardinal Thomas Wolseys palace at Hampton Court. The work is accompanied by other sacred choral works by Taverner, including his Ave Maria composed for Wolsey's Cardinal College, Oxford, and one of his most widely copied works, Gaude plurimum a dramatic work where Taverner exploits the power of his full forces to evoke Christs harrowing of hell and the breaking of the bloody powers of the prince of eternal death Contrapunctus is an early-music vocal ensemble dedicated to passionate interpretations informed by authoritative insight and understanding.

In their very first recording together, the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and pianist Charles Richard-Hamelin render Frédéric Chopins concertos for piano and orchestra, two vibrant and poetic works that the composer wrote in his early 20s. Charles Richard-Hamelin is impressive with his extremely refined playing and the OSM, under the direction of Kent Nagano, offers wonderfully fluid performances that are charged with contagious energy. Charles Richard-Hamelin is a silver medalist and laureate of the Krystian Zimerman Prize at the 2015 International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. He stands out as one of the most important musicians of his generation. In 2014, he also won second prize at the Concours musical international de Montreal and third prize at the Seoul International Music Competition in South Korea. Charles is the recipient of the Order of Arts and Letters of Quebec and the prestigious Career Development Award offered by the Womens Musical Club of Toronto.

Tadd Dameron’s working instrument was the piano though, in a be-bop universe dominated by Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk, he didn’t pretend to be a virtuoso. Anyway, keyboard mastery was irrelevant because Dameron’s real genius lay in composition and even his arranging skills were much appreciated by his bop peers. Described by veteran producer/historian Ira Gitler as "a gracious, soft-spoken man", Dameron’s lyricism, laced with impressionism, shines in classics like Charlie Parker’s Hot House, Dizzy Gillespie’s Good Bait and Our Delight, Fats Navarro’s The Squirrel, Billy Eckstine’s Cool Breeze and Sarah Vaughan’s shimmering If You Could See Me Now (for which he also wrote the lyrics). And, in this new album celebrating his work, singer Vanessa Rubin presents familiar Dameronia mixed with a few pieces that have been overlooked.

Keyboards and the acoustic piano were the reigning pop-jazz instruments of the fall of 1990, with major releases ranging from veterans like Joe Sample and Bobby Lyle to up-and-comers like Makoto Ozone and Kim Pensyl. Perhaps the most long awaited of these releases was the solo debut of longtime Spyro Gyra keyboardist Tom Schuman. Extremities features SG saxman Jay Beckenstein as player and producer, but happily, Schuman's own playing shows a great deal more adventure and spunk than he is allowed in the band setting. He elegantly blends snazzy synth with sweet acoustic trimmings, playing it safe on a gorgeous cover of Minnie Riperton's "Loving You" while jamming on the fusion showcases and displaying a rich depth of the disturbing yet intriguing "Mood Swing." It took a long time, but Schuman's coming-out party was worth the wait.

Rising star from the young composer’s generation, Camille Pépin chose to record her first album with the artists who have been accompanying her since her debut. She is taken by numerous extra-musical influences: from English literature to Japanese etchings, mythology to astronomy. These disparate elements all converge on travel as their common theme, wanderlust and dreams of elsewhere. A fusion of all these ingredients, Camille Pépin's music sets itself apart above all through its rhythmic aspect, at once dancing and almost incantatory, presided over by lyricism.

Bernstein's piano output reflects the various strands of his multifaceted personality, in works as different as Touches (1981) – influenced by Aaron Copland’s thorny Piano Variations – and , at the other end of the scale, his often tender, sentimental Anniversaries, miniatures written in commemoration of important people in his life. Taken together his piano works form a musical diary tracing the breadth of his experiences and ideas. Smaller piano pieces often preview bigger things to come. Four of his Five Anniversaries (1949-51) appear as themes in his violin concerto, the Serenade after Plato’s “Symposium.”

This album has its origin in a commission that was made last year to Leo Maslíah in Montevideo by the LAPA, Audiovisual Preservation Laboratory of the University of the Republic, for the restoration of the silent film Del pingo at the wheel. The proposal was that during the screening of the restored copy, Maslíah played his music. This was done as planned, but the album is not the exact recording of what was played on the occasion, but each piece has its full length, something that the composer explains very well in the internal text of the disc's graphics. . So the album is longer than the film, in addition to the end brings two bonus tracks whose origin were similar experiences, audiovisual.
