With an anguished, melodic baritone that falls somewhere in the neighborhood of Scott Walker, Pulp touring guitarist and former Longpigs member Richard Hawley is a songwriter, guitarist, and producer whose elegant, timeless solo work ranges from neo-psychedelic indie rock to vintage roots rock, sweeping, lushly orchestrated ballads, and highly styled romantic pop. He has often used his native Sheffield, England's locations as a muse, particularly on the award-winning trilogy of Cole's Corner, Lady's Bridge, and Truelove's Gutter. He has been nominated several times for the Mercury Prize as well as a Brit Award.

Coles Corner, the follow up to previous albums on Setanta, Late Night Final (2001) and Lowedges (2003), was recorded at Yellowarch Studio in Sheffield, singer/songwriter Hawley's hometown and is a beautiful album, filled with nostalgia, emotion and romance. The album's orchestral splendour sits alongside earthy rock and roll with songs that are by turns intimate and soaring. Richard Hawley insists his mind is full only with 'confused thoughts and Guinness'. But when he sings, he does so in a voice that's deep and low, and does not lie. His merciful, wise songs tell of the heart's truths as seen in the dark, revealed by moonlight. Thom Yorke (Radiohead) says… 'Richard Hawley is all I'm listening to at the moment' and Scott Walker says… 'Richards voice is up there with the all time greats'…

On reflection, it's no wonder that so many artists were available for Total Lee: The Songs of Lee Hazlewood. Hazlewood occupies a position in posterity similar to that of the Velvet Underground–ignored by the world at large, but disproportionately adored by fellow musicians. Hazlewood's only glimpse of popular appeal occurred when Nancy Sinatra had a worldwide hit with his "These Boots Are Made For Walking"–a karaoke standard ignored by the 16 artists who appear on this tribute album. What is startling about this fine collection is that a lot of the artists here seem endearingly unable to separate their admiration for Hazlewood's songs from Hazlewood's myth: for most young men who've ever picked up a guitar, Hazlewood's life of meandering from town to town, girl to girl, bottle to bottle, has a certain aspirational quality, and may be the reason why every male artist on this album finds himself, consciously or not, adopting Hazlewood's signature consumptive drawl: The Webb Brothers, Jarvis Cocker and Richard Hawley, Calexico and Erlend Oye are more impersonation than interpretation, but nonetheless engaging.
