Christophe Rousset in his two-CD set confines himself to the three principal collections of 1706, 1724 and c. 1728 additionally including La Dauphine (1747) and the charming but slight Les petits marteaux de M Rameau. This last-mentioned piece was until recently thought to be by Rameau's one-time pupil and champion, Balbastre.

The Pièces de clavecin en concerts are a kind of link between the Italian trio sonatas and Bach’s polyphonic trios. An example of the latter would be the trio sonata which concludes the Musical Offering. Another example would be the keyboard sonatas – for harpsichord or pianoforte – with violin or ad libitum accompaniment which were developed considerably at the end of the XVIII century, especially in France.

Beautiful, flawless performance by Kenneth Gilbert of a hitherto unknown work, one that deserves far more promimence in the body of Baroque keyboard music that is performed, recorded, and heard today. While there have been numerous recordings of the opera ballet itself, hearing the harpsichord transcriptions is a rare treasure trove.

Classical Cult potential. Since the days of Glenn Gould there has probably been no piano recording so highly charged with individualism, so radically performed, and so consistently conceived.

The New Chamber Opera Ensemble made an impact upon me a year ago with its first recording for ASV of Charpentier’s Le mariage forcé and Les fous divertissements. Now it follows that release with a two-disc set of Rameau’s complete cantatas – seven of them, with two versions of Aquilon et Orithie – and it is another fine effort that puts them at the very forefront of the youngest generation of practitioners of period-style performance.

… Niquet casts the three surviving grands motets from strength, with the likes of Stephan Imbodem and Véronique Gens among his other soloists. His conducting is alert, rhythmically buoyant, and attentive to both musical and word values, as the multi-tempo hurdles of “Converte, Domine” show. Details are never lost, but neither is momentum. The choral and orchestral work of Le Concert Spirituel is first-rate, with a precision that doesn’t rule out a refined color palette.

A new album of Rameau from Finnish accordionist Janne Valkeajoki presents a harmonious fusion of baroque brilliance and modern innovation. Renowned for his unparalleled contributions to Baroque opera, Jean-Philippe Rameau stands as one of the era's most important composers, and the brilliance of his compositions is now reimagined through a more modern lens. Through a unique and innovative approach, Rameau's meticulously crafted movements find new life with the accordion—an instrument that adds a fresh, vibrant layer to the music, bringing Rameau's innovative spirit into the contemporary realm and highlighting the accordion's versatility as both a singing and an orchestral instrument. This new album comprises two suites, each movement creating a unique atmosphere of its own. In an era where full suites are less commonly heard than individual movements, the album offers a rare opportunity to experience Rameau's work in its entirety, as he originally intended.

The soloists of the Simón Bolivar Orchestra of Venezuela have invited harpsichordist Bruno Procopio to conduct a programme dedicated entirely to Jean-Philippe Rameau. Procopio has also recorded the 'Pièces de clavecin en concerts' and first performed this all-Rameau programme at the Simón Bolivar Concert Hall in 2012. Discovering French Baroque music was a new departure for the Venezuelan musicians who responded with characteristic enthusiasm and verve to this dance-related suite, albeit working as a smaller group than usual. Maestro José Antonio Abreu, founder of El Sistema is also an acclaimed harpsichorist but as yet there are no period instrument orchestras in Venezuela.

Silk Baroque presents a musical encounter between Wu Wei and Holland Baroque, performing a programme that ranges from Baroque greats such as Bach, Vivaldi, Telemann and Rameau to Chinese traditional tunes, all tied together by the musicians’ openness to improvisation, experimentation and cultural exchange. Wu Wei plays the sheng, an extraordinary ancient Chinese mouth organ, which looks like a bundle of bamboo reeds cased in a metal bowl. It is a miracle of harmony, melody and rhythmic possibilities, and Wu Wei’s abilities fully bring out the sheng’s beauty: whispering, charming, and compelling. Age-old traditions come together in performances that sound fresh and contemporary. Silk Baroque carries listeners into a lively, enticing and fascinating sound world.

Behold Orpheus, the singing shepherd who braved the Underworld to bring back Eurydice. The only human to conquer death, this famous Thracian bard is the hero of the French cantatas that flourished between 1710 and 1730. They paint a picture of the faithful husband’s burning ardour and pleas, his hypnotic song that won over the King of Darkness, his furtive glance that would forever rob him of his beloved; these are miniature operas, their intense poignancy rendered by the chamber choir that magnificently envelops the singer. This fine team masterfully weaves a tapestry of emotions, the early gems of the Rocaille period, offering a sequel to the Coucher du Roi with which they gifted us two years ago. This truly is the spirit of Versailles.

The Baltimore Consort used to do programs similar to this one, but The Harp Consort takes the production values and vocal artistry to an even higher level. From the opening, a highly rhythmic, sensuously melodic traditional Breton number, you're drawn into a world of earthy, folk-based music that's filled out with the colors of period instruments and brought to life by the expressive voices of singers who allow the flow and pulse of the language to shape phrases and create natural accents and inflection. The result is affecting, engrossing performances that convey what we can only surmise is a reasonably accurate realization of these ancient and justifiably enduring tunes.

The remarkable French harpsichordist Christophe Rousset tackles Rameau’s relatively unknown instrumental transcription of his popular opéra-ballet, Les Indes Galantes.
Christophe Rousset plays Rameau’s instrumental transcription of Les Indes Galantes on the stunning 18th century Jean-Henry Hemsch harpsichord. Public disapproval to the premiere of the opéra-ballet led to Rameau not only omitting the recitatives and its controversial passages, but to transcribing the whole work for instruments. He re-grouped the remaining pieces according to their keys into what he called ‘quatre grands concerts’ or concert suites.
