Dear Mr Time were originally around at the dawn of the 1970s when, in line with many fascinating obscurities of this type, they recorded a sole album before imploding and disappearing in a tidal wave of public apathy. Like many of these curios, the album later became a sought-after collectors’ item on vinyl, fetching significant sums whenever it appeared.
The album is actually a conceptual piece telling the story of a man’s life from birth to death. Now, this wasn’t an original idea even then, but it is surprisingly well-executed, even now not appearing too dated. The influences are clear throughout: the album comes across as something of a cross between The Moody Blues and King Crimson’s first album…

Released on 10th September 1991, Jethro Tull’s 18th studio album, Catfish Rising, was the band’s first to feature keyboardist Andrew Giddings, who had replaced Martin Allcock. The record continues the hard rock and blues sound of Tull’s previous two LPs, Crest Of A Knave and Rock Island. The Catfish tour took in eighty-four dates, performed across fifteen countries between June and December ’91. Featuring shows in North America, Germany, the UK and most of the regular continental European destinations, unusually they also played five nights in Turkey, a less regular territory for rock bands to perform in during the nineties. Of the Turkish shows, four out of five took place in Istanbul, all played at the city’s Harbiye Cemil Topuzlu Open Air Theatre, between 12th and 17th of July.

Formed by five Charterhouse pupils in 1967 - Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Peter Gabriel, guitarist Anthony Phillips and drummer Chris Stewart - Genesis were named by former pupil and pop impresario Jonathan King who arranged for them to record several singles and their debut album, From Genesis to Revelation, in 1969. After splitting with King, the band began touring, signed with Charisma Records and became a progressive rock band with Trespass (1970). Phillips departed after the album's recording, with Banks, Rutherford and Gabriel recruiting Phil Collins on drums and Steve Hackett on guitar before working on Nursery Cryme (1971). Recorded at Trident Studios from August ‘71, Nursery Cryme was released in November and reached No. 39 in the UK, albeit not until 1974.

Masaaki Suzuki was an organist before he was a conductor, and his recordings of Bach's organ works have made a delightful coda to his magisterial survey of Bach cantatas with his Bach Collegium Japan. This selection, the second in a series appearing on the BIS label, gives a good idea of the gems available. You get a good mix of pieces, including a pair of Bach's Vivaldi transcriptions. Fans of Suzuki's cantata series will be pleased to note the similarities in his style between his conducting and his organ playing: there's a certain precise yet deliberate and lush quality common to both. And he has a real co-star here: the organ of the Kobe Shoin Women's University Chapel, built in 1983 by French maker Marc Garnier. The realizations of Bach's transcriptions of Vivaldi concertos fare especially well here, with a panoply of subtle colors in the organ. Sample the first movement of the Concerto in D minor, BWV 596, with its mellow yet transcendently mysterious tones in the string ripieni. BIS backs Suzuki up with marvelously clear engineering in the small Japanese chapel, and all in all, this is a Bach organ recording that stands out from the crowd. Highly recommended.

To name but a few), then THIS IS the collection for you.

In spite of doom-laden predictions a few years ago that the age of recorded opera was dead, fascinating new discs are being produced, often of obscure rarities – and it would be hard to be more obscure than the operas of Domènec Terradellas, who worked for a while at the King's theatre in London in the mid-1740s but whose music has completely disappeared from view. On the evidence of this lavish and dramatic opera seria for Rome and Barcelona, he was alive to the most modern trends in virtuosic vocal writing without ever quite achieving depth of feeling. Juan Bautista Otero's committed revival with his sparkling Barcelona orchestra includes some dazzling singing, with the honours shared between Alexandrina Pendatchanska's correctvicious Nitocri and Sunhae Im in the title role.

The epitome of a Renaissance man, Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739) won success and acclaim as a poet, writer, musician, lawyer, judge, administrator and philologist. Though his keyboard sonatas have appeared on several recorded collections of the Italian Baroque, they have rarely been presented in a comprehensive manner. In doing so, this album celebrates the personal even idiosyncratic style of a composer whose technical accomplishment facilitates rather than stifling his creative voice. The 12 Sonatas were later published as Op.3. They date from early in Marcellos career, and are mostly cast in three and four brief movements, though the first and last of them, in D minor and C minor respectively, feature more extended forms.
