Electric Food is the self-titled album of Electric Food, a studio project that included (uncredited) singer George Mavros with musicians from Lucifer's Friend that released two albums in 1970, the other being Flash. Flash is the second and final album by Electric Food. Soon after its release, the core of band formed Asterix and recorded one album: Asterix. Less than a year later Asterix would change their name to Lucifer's Friend. In 2004 Electric Food and Flash were released on one CD by Mason Records. Both Electric Food albums sound very similar to Lucifer's Friend's debut but include strong influences from Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, and Spooky Tooth.

The Bee Gees released their first single in 1963, but they didn't have a hit in their homeland of Australia until 1965. It took another two years for them to crack the Top 20 in the U.K. and U.S., after which the hits came steadily until the band temporarily split in late 1969. The trio would later re-form and experience much greater success, but Ace's 2017 compilation To Love Somebody: The Songs of the Bee Gees 1966-1970 concentrates on the songs they wrote during their first act, a time when they were seen as songwriters as much as performers.

Neither Stefan Parkman nor Chandos could be accused of pandering to the masses in their choice of repertoire for this series of recordings by the Danish National Radio Choir. True, Reger's name may be more familiar than, say, Lidholm, Norgard, Pepping or Pizzetti (featured on previous discs), but only to the extent that the mere mention of Reger's a cappella music will send sensitive souls scurrying into the nearest Karaoke lounge. Visions of myriad notes covering the page would frighten most choirs away, but these singers are made of sterner stuff. For them complex contrapuntal structures, devious chromatic harmonies and textures so thick you need a forage knife to get through them, hold no terrors. Rather they not only weave their way through Reger's characteristically tangled scores without a moment's doubt, but illuminate the paths so clearly one hardly notices the dense musical undergrowth all around.

Hofmann’s chamber music is of special interest. The instrumentation itself is often original; we look in vain for string quartets in his oeuvre. At first glance the Octet for Flute, Clarinet, Horn, Bassoon, Two Violins, Viola, and Violoncello reminds us of the classical serenade, but at the same time it has a deeply felt romantic tone and is very original in its formal design. The Serenade for Flute and String Quintet marked by the fascinating contrast between virtuoso flute parts and intimate string parts is enchanting.

Despite being renowned in certain parts of the world (especially in Italy and their hometown of Paris), the space-age outfit Rockets remains largely obscure – even though they arrived on the scene at almost he same exact time as Kraftwerk and prefaced Devo by several years. The multi-membered outfit originally formed in 1972, under the name Crystal, performing on-stage in their regular street clothes. But by 1974, Crystal had evolved into Rocket Men, issuing a debut self-titled single, while its members began to assume the identities of aliens; complete with silver makeup covering their skin, grey contact lenses, space suits, and bald heads.

Diogenio Bigaglia, a composer who at present is unknown to most people, was active in Venice in the first half of the eighteenth century, so he was a contemporary of the much better known Tomaso Albinoni, Alessandro and Benedetto Marcello, and, above all, Antonio Vivaldi, whose work shows several evident– and more or less explicit – references to Bigaglia’s production. So he turns out to be a composer who is worthy of interest not only for the intrinsic musical worth of his works, but also for the influence his activity may have had on musicians with whom we are more familiar; this is why musicologists have recently started showing an increasing interest in him.

The Meistersaal Sessions are a 6-part series of chamber music theme concerts with the Freigeist Ensemble at the legendary Meistersaal Berlin, conducted by Joolz Gale. The series starts with arrangements of Schönberg, Strauss and Mahler. In collaboration with British photographer Gavin Evans, these club-concert sessions come live from the legendary Meistersaal Berlin, known historically as the “big hall by the Berlin Wall”. Its art-deco building is the current home of Emil Berliner Studios (audio partner for this project) and steeped in many decades of musical history.

Four CD set. Emerging from the ashes of Southend-based late '60s psych-pop crew Cardboard Orchestra, heavy rock band ZIOR were one of the first acts to attach themselves at the turn of the decade to the occult-themed heavy rock element of the British underground scene. Although ZIOR never really threatened to replicate the commercial success of brand leaders Black Sabbath, their live shows were hugely theatrical events involving mock-sacrifices, staged fights and diabolic costumes and masks that terrified their young audiences and apparently freaked out other bands as well! They also left behind three albums that have been wildly collectable for many years. Their self-titled debut set ZIOR was issued in 1971 by the Nepentha label in a highly atmospheric gatefold sleeve design by the legendary Keef. A year or so later, Nepentha boss Larry Page put out the German-only release Every Inch A Man, an equally thrilling collection. Sandwiched between those two albums, ZIOR also pseudonymously recorded the LP The First Monument, which was promoted as the work of members of a witches' coven in downtown Essex. All three albums, plus ZIOR's 2018 reunion album Spirit Of The Gods, are now collected for the first time on Before My Eyes Go Blind, a 4-CD set that's presented in a clamshell box with replica album sleeve wallets, a lengthy new essay on the band and a number of evocative, previously unpublished photos.

Label: Classics | FLAC (tracks + .cue,log) | Time: 76:03 | 176 MB
Genre: Jazz, Swing

These are the last recordings in the Fats Waller legacy. The 22 tracks are drawn from sessions recorded in March and July of 1942 and January and September of 1943. Featuring the last recordings with his rhythm, a version of "That Ain't Right" with Ada Brown on vocals and V-disc recordings made for soldiers overseas during World War II. It is the V-disc material that proved Waller wasn't just a jovial clown, which he makes obvious on his version of "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child" performed on organ. Anyone only familiar with the Waller hits like "Ain't Misbehavin'" (included here in two separate versions) should hear this to gain perspective on his career.~Al Campbell
