The fourth and final installment in a complete edition of Debussy songs might not seem to be a chartbuster, but that's just what this release by British soprano Lucy Crowe has become, and it deserves every bit of its success. In fact, you might even pick this one over the other three if you're looking to sample Crowe's approach: the program is exceptionally well put together, and it begins with Debussy's first published song, Tragédie, of 1881. There are several other early songs, giving insight into the young Debussy's romantic life as well as hints of the musical language to come and some real experiments (you could sample the Rondel chinois). From there, the program proceeds to later music but is not strictly chronological: instead Crowe leads you onto a path of extremely quiet songs wherein Debussy challenges the soprano to reside in her upper register, and Crowe meets the challenges beautifully. The tension is remarkable, with just a single piano solo and a pair of songs to Debussy's own texts (Nuits blanches, or Sleepless Nights) with baritone Christopher Maltman to break it. The music broadens out with some later songs, ending with Debussy's swan song, Noël des enfants qui n'ont plus de maisons, of 1915. The contributions of pianist Malcolm Martineau are substantial; he produces some truly eerie sounds in the quieter pieces. Highly recommended and often haunting.

Mac Rebennack (aka Dr. John) in many ways embodies not only New Orleans music, but American music as well. His distinct sound is rooted in Crescent City jazz and R&B, yet also contains elements of country, blues, and rock & roll. And it's all tied together by an individualist attitude and a voodoo-mystic aesthetic utterly unique to the doctor. Trader John's Crawfish Soiree is a double-disc set of early odds and sods that presents John in a rollicking, nascent incarnation. Far from the more traditionalist approach he's embodied since the 1990s, here John is riffing on vintage R&B, and sprinkling it with just enough gris-gris to give it his signature bayou weirdness. Nearly all of the songs are Rebennack originals, but John has such strong ties to the roots of his music that it often sounds like these songs have sprung up from the dirt. While the liner notes offer little in the way of session information, they do provide a succinct overview of Rebennack's long career, making this a nice entry point for neophytes, in addition to being a delight for fans.

Dr. John first became a star by taking the sounds and traditions of New Orleans blues, jazz, and R&B and twisting them into new forms as evidenced by his run of early Atlantic and Atco albums form 1969's Gris Gris and 1974's hit, In The Right Place. As time went by, he would become one of the strongest proponents of the Crescent City's musical heritage, celebrating the songs that made the city – as well as the men and women who made them – great. (1982's The Brightest Smile in Town, 1992's Goin' Back to New Orleans, and 2014's Ske-Dat-De-Dat: The Spirit of Satch being three representative exsamples.)

This collection of 12 songs written over the course of Giddens’ career bursts with life-affirming energy, drawing from the folk music that she knows so deeply, as well as its pop descendants. The album was produced by Jack Splash (Kendrick Lamar, Solange, Alicia Keys, Valerie June, Tank and the Bangas) and recorded at Criteria Recording Studios in Miami with a band composed of Giddens’s closest musical collaborators from the past decade alongside musicians from Splash’s own Rolodex, topped off with a horn section, making an impressive ten to twelve-person ensemble.

On March 16, 1968, the United States Army killed over 500 unarmed civilians in the hamlet of Mỹ Lai, Vietnam. The unimaginable brutality of the event impacted all those who witnessed it firsthand, including helicopter pilot Hugh Thompson, who, against orders, intervened to save Vietnamese lives. Thompson’s story is the basis of the opera Mỹ Lai, composed by Jonathan Berger (music) and Harriet Scott Chessman (libretto) for Kronos Quartet, Vietnamese multi-instrumentalist Vân-Ánh Vanessa Võ, and vocalist Rinde Eckert. This recording of Mỹ Lai captures the visceral, phantasmal depictions of Thompson’s grief, horror, and guilt as he is haunted by persistent memories of that cataclysmic day, half a world and nearly four decades away. Tense and unforgiving, Mỹ Lai is “a gripping affair, beginning to end” (New York Times). Presented here alongside recollections by Vietnamese survivor Trần Văn Đức, it is a memorial to all the Mỹ Lai villagers killed on that grim day.

After returning unexpectedly from a 20-year retirement with successful comeback album Resurgence in 2019, the voice of The Hollies - Allan Clarke - is back with I'll Never Forget. The album reunites Allan with his old Hollies bandmate, Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills And Nash fame. The two old friends from Manchester began writing together during the pandemic after over 40 years, resulting in the effortlessly catchy Buddy's Back, a tribute to the rock & roll great The Hollies were named after. Graham's beautiful trademark harmonies are present throughout the album, but this is very much Allan's record.

Outstanding trumpet player Gabriele Cassone and harpsichordist Antonio Frigé are the fine interpreters of these works, full of brio and of savoury descriptive writing à la français. The use of the trumpet reveals itself very suitable for some pieces, particularly those of the Cinquième Concert, entitled La Guerre (hence the CD title), whose martial features indeed seem to call for such an instrument. The interpretation of the "Pian & Forte" ensemble, with its full and brilliant sound produced by six Baroque trumpets, strings and timpani, contributes to attain the martial spirit of these late 17th-century compositions.

Rodelinda, Regina de' Longobardi was the 7th opera Handel wrote for the Royal Academy of Music founded in 1719. It was premiered at the King's Theater in the Haymarket on February 13, 1725, with great success, as chroniclers report. There were 14 performances in the first season and 8 in each of the revivals in the following season and in 1731, for which Handel revised the work. Thus, it is not surprising that, after nearly 190 years of oblivion, it should have been Rodelinda, now in a German language version and called Rodelinde, which marked the beginning of the 20th century revival of Handel's operas on June 26, 1920, during the Gottingen Handel Festival.
