The Holy Mountain [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] Review by Mark Deming
While not as well-known as his iconic lysergic western El Topo, which became one of the major midnight movies of the '70s, The Holy Mountain is arguably the definitive work from Chilean/Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky, a visually dazzling and gloriously confounding story of the search for spiritual enlightenment. While it's all but impossible to describe what happens in The Holy Mountain, given its emphasis on surreal visuals over narrative, it's a cult film for the best reasons – love it or hate it, it's a remarkable and thoroughly individual accomplishment – and the soundtrack album, featuring Jodorowsky's original score, is an eclectic and interesting listen in its own right. The music sways from rock ("Psychedelic Weapons") to esoteric folk music ("Pissed and Passed Out") to subtle tone poems ("Violence of the Lambs") to grand-scale orchestral themes ("Christs 4 Sale"), with plenty of room for lyrical musical backdrops ("Communion"), a dash of vintage dance music ("A Walk in the Park"), and even some Tuvan throat singing ("Trance Mutation").

UK two CD collection from the British Indie band. Taking their name from a Thelonious Monk jazz album, they issued ten singles, five albums and various compilations between 1983 and 1993. Many of them made the Indie Chart, from early efforts with hints of Psychobilly and the Cramps to more melodic, C86-flavoured tracks (think the Smiths and the Housemartins) and later tracks with a hint of Shoegazer and Baggy about them. In Davey Woodward, the Brilliant Corners were fronted by a handsome, charismatic singer who was also a talented songwriter - and Davey's cooperated with this long-overdue anthology, helping with the track listing and supplying the entertaining sleeve-notes. This is the most authoritative Brilliant Corners collection to date, boasting all their singles on the SS20 and McQueen labels plus numerous tracks which have never before been on CD and a handful of previously unissued demos and live tracks. Cherry Red.

2011 compilation that features some of the funkiest covers from around the world and throughout time. The album includes a wide range of styles including Deep Funk, Latin Soul, hard Salsa, Soul, Afrobeat, and Cumbia. From the Ebony Rhythm Band's Deep Funk cover of 'Light My Fire' to the soulful version of 'Purple Haze' by Johnny Jones and the King Casuals, the unforgettable tracks keep on coming. There's also plenty of hard pounding Salsa with Ray Barretto's cover of 'Pastime Paradise,' Mongo Santamaria's cover of 'Cloud Nine' and Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra's cover of Spoon's 'I Turn My Camera On.' More recent artists include Mighty Mo and the Winchester 7 and Nostalgia 77 covering 'The Message' and 'Seven Nation Army', respectively. Each infectious song will leave listeners helplessly grooving to the beats, letting go on the dance floor and ultimately begging for more.

For all of his many attributes, one thing Frank Zappa most certainly was not is commercial. Presumably, the title of this collection is ironic. Strictly Commercial: The Best of Frank Zappa is a compilation not of the composer's hits – he only broke the Top 40 on one occasion, with "Valley Girl" – but rather, a collection of his best-known material, from "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow" to "Sexual Harassment in the Workplace." Zappa's albums often function as individual works, but this disc offers an intelligent selection of songs, serving as an introduction to the maverick musician.

British but based in New York, Spacehog's publicity material would have you believe the group resurrects the glam heyday of vintage Bowie and Mott the Hoople (even disingeniously referring to them as "the band who fell to earth"). It's all well and good to set your sights high, but the hype creates expectations that Resident Alien is incapable of delivering, despite the blatant Ziggy Stardust vocal inflections of "Starside" and "Zeroes." There's no doubt that this awkwardly-named combo attack their chosen retro-glam vocation with panache, flash, and good humor, but there's ultimately not a lot of substance behind the theatrical pose and fat Gibson runs.

In 1956, singer Sanford Clark, guitarist Al Casey and producer Lee Hazlewood laid out the all-time rockabilly classic The Fool and put Phoenix, Arizona, on the music world's radar. The Foolcame out on the tiny MCI imprint and, energized by the national hit, the label for the next five years turned out more Rock 'n' Roll gems by the likes of Al Casey, Dick Robinson and His Makebelievers, Jim Fleming and The Casuals, Bobby and The Demons, Frank Fafara and Denny Reed. This collection is the first-ever overview of this ground-breaking company, featuring Sanford Clark's never-before-heard pre-Fool recordings of Blue Suede Shoes and Heartbreak Hotel plus previously unreleased tracks by Lee Hazlewood, Spence Bare and the Newton Brothers featuring Wayne Newton, several vintage 1950s advertising jingles and two songs played on AMC's 'Mad Men.'
