With Acrobat’s catalogue having grown substantially, and its product strategy evolved significantly over the years, we are occasionally looking to repurpose some of our early albums in the context of the product formats that are now more widely used in our releases. This 70-track 3-CD set comprises the complete contents, plus some added titles, of three products released in our ACRCD range more than fifteen years ago, and which offered the opportunity to assemble a nicely coherent, substantial and enhanced single product at a lower price than the three single CDs combined. Those CDs were ACRCD 117, 118 & 119 “Bebop Vols. 1, 2 & 3”. The titles on those three CDs have now been re-compiled in chronological order, with duplicated titles removed and twelve new titles added, along with a substantial booklet. The collection comprises recordings which are seen as significant performances in the genesis and development of bebop as a genre, or regarded as important or notable examples of bebop. The tracks have also been selected so that a significant proportion of the artists regarded as pioneers, innovators or noted exponents of bebop are represented in the collection. On that basis, it features a host of great names not only in bebop but in the wider world of jazz, and the collection offers a highly entertaining an insightful trawl across a dynamic jazz decade.

The Rattles performed in Hamburg, and played at the same venues as The Beatles on several occasions in 1962. In 1964 the group recorded "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah", which charted in the UK. In 1968 they recorded their first version of "The Witch", with vocals by Henner Hoier. The band's records sold well in Germany during the 1960s. Their second version of "The Witch" in 1970, this time with vocals by Edna Bejarano, became their only international hit. "The Witch" appeared in the Top 10 on the UK Singles Chart, the top 20 in Austria, and reached the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S., the first German record to reach that chart. It eventually sold over one million copies.

AThe title says it all - The Old School adheres to postwar Chicago blues, with a couple of Delta or New Orleans tracks thrown in for good measure. To his credit, Bob Margolin does delve deep into the catalogs of Robert Johnson, Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, and Percy Mayfield, among others, digging out songs that haven't been covered as frequently as others. His originals - which are in the style of his idols, naturally - can't help but pale next to the classics he's chosen, but they are competent genre exercises. Margolin, on the whole, isn't a particularly remarkable player - he doesn't have a gripping voice or a distinctive slide guitar technique - but he is passionate about this music, and it shows. And that means The Old School is entertaining while it's on, but it doesn't leave much of a lasting impression.

Dylan made his way to New York City in January of 1961, immediately making a substantial impression on the folk community of Greenwich Village. He began visiting his idol Guthrie in the hospital, where he was slowly dying from Huntington's chorea. Dylan also began performing in coffee houses, and his rough charisma won him a significant following. In April, he opened for John Lee Hooker at Gerde's Folk City. Five months later, Dylan performed another concert at the venue, which was reviewed positively by Robert Shelton in The New York Times. Columbia A&R man John Hammond sought Dylan out on the strength of the review, and signed the songwriter in the fall of 1961.

Is it really 50 years since I first heard the Safe As Milk album? Well, yes it is and I still play it regularly. It still sounds fresh and exciting although probably not quite as ‘weird’ as it originally sounded to me all that time ago. Hey, Beefheart soon got much weirder but Safe As Milk is still one hell of a debut album. Not only was it a debut album but it was the first release on a brand new label, Buddah, set up by Kama Sutra Records. They must have had some faith in the band back then. It’s a pity the Mt Tamalpais show ended in disaster and the proposed Monterey appearance didn’t happen. Those shows could have made the band’s career and would probably have repaid Kama Sutra in spades, and maybe, just maybe made some money for Don and the Magic Band. Perhaps that did happen in a parallel universe somewhere and Don went on to become a superstar headlining stadium shows around the world. Hmmm, but I have to wonder whether that would have been a good thing or not?

Eddie Higgins has long been a part of the American jazz scene, though he has tended to be overlooked by critics and to a certain extent, record labels in his homeland. But the cagey veteran knows his way around the piano and makes swinging seem effortless, as on these 2000 sessions. Fortunately, the Japanese Venus label has found a steady market for Higgins' CDs in Japan, where he has had many opportunities to record as a leader. This disc is a trio affair with guitarist John Pizzarelli and bassist Jay Leonhart, both accomplished musicians as well. Beginning with a strutting take of "Close Your Eyes," which brings a fresh sound to this old chestnut, it is clear right away that the chemistry among the players is just right. Duke Ellington's lush ballad "I Didn't Know About You" seemed like it was destined to be overlooked, but Higgins is one of many who have offered shimmering treatments of this lyrical gem…

The pseudonym Laurence Vanay belongs to female musician Jacqueline Thibault, wife of Magma's early bassist Laurent Thibault. In 1974 she released her first personal LP for SFP, entitled ''Galaxies''. She was helped by Laurent Thibault on bass, Jean Chevalier on drums, Serge Derrien (later with Keris) on guitars, flutes and voices, while Jacqueline Thibault plays the Hammond organ, the acoustic guitars and sings. The album has a mystic and beautiful atmosphere, pointing out the talent of Thibault in creating great moods and arranging. It is close to the majestic moments of Catharsis and the folkier themes of Ange, while sounding quite personal allthe way. A mix of Folk Music and light Symphonic Rock, ''Galaxies'' has a smooth sound from start to end with brilliant and ethereal soundscapes created by the soft acoustic passages, the careful use of Hammond organ and the elegant style the flutes are used…

Wings of Heaven is the seventh studio album by the English rock band Magnum, released in 1988. The original choice of producers for Wings of Heaven was Roger Taylor and Dave Richards, who had produced Vigilante. This was not realised because of conflicting schedules. Albert Boekholt was suggested at Wisseloord Studios, the Netherlands. The album was mixed at Sarm West Studios in London in January 1988. One song was announced, "That's How The Blues Must Start", but was dropped from the album. The album is certified Silver in the UK.

Saxophonist, flautist and composer Chip Wickham casts a formidable shadow across the UK jazz landscape. Originally from Brighton, Chip Wickham first came to prominence in the UK breakbeat scene playing with the likes of Nightmares On Wax and Graham Massey. But at heart Chip has always been a jazz musician (he played on Matthew Halsall’s debut album 'Sending My Love' in 2008 beginning a relationship with Gondwana Records that now spans 17 years) and now dividing his time between the UK, Spain and the Middle-East, he has made a name for himself with a series of beautifully crafted solo albums that draw equally on hard swinging spiritual jazz, the classic sounds of 60s British jazz and the more contemporary sounds of artists such as Jazzanova, The Cinematic Orchestra, and Nicola Conte.
