After many collaborations in collective projects, the pianist creates Phonem, a more personal project, in which she instills her moving conception of composition. She surrounds Reno Silva Couto on saxophone, Philippe Burneau on bass and Tilo Bertholo on drums. Born in 2016, the project opens very quickly to more ephemeral meetings and musicians are regularly invited. This first album marks both the beginning of a promising career and the accomplishment of several years of collaborations, exchanges and learning. Magic Malik and Vincent Segal, who saw the birth of the project and immediately supported and encouraged it, are naturally invited on two tracks of the album. Animus Volandi is a snapshot. That of a living music, which is renewed with each interpretation. The idea of the composer is that a piece can take a direction always new, according to the initiatives of each. Writing is the pretext for more freedom, through improvisation and the interaction it allows. The influences are wide: we find the idea of polyrhythm dear to Steve Coleman and Magic Malik, but also contemporary music, repetitive, which completes the whole and makes it more elusive. Intentions differ and come together, and create the richness of this music of chance, as Paul Auster would say. A sensitive and solid disc, which has a lot to offer.Tracklist:

Après deux ou trois morceaux , l’univers, les compositions, et même le jeu de piano de Maïlys Maronne me font irrésistiblement songer à la grande Carla Bley. J’y retrouve cette manière de créer des comptines entêtantes, faussement bancales, ce goût pour les musiques répétitives, ou faussement répétitives, que l’on fait dérailler avec un amour minutieux. Mais je décèle aussi bien d’autres éléments qui viennent d’ailleurs, le goût des cycles rythmiques complexes et des superpositions, quelques pincées d’électroniques, l’utilisation du chant pour ajouter de la matière aux unissons, tout cela compose un monde sonore très personnel qui, tout en étant très réfléchi garde une fraîcheur enfantine.
L’un des secrets de cette musique, je crois, réside dans le choix des musiciens et dans les rapports de complémentarité qui circulent entre eux. Pour compléter les casse-têtes chinois qu’elle aime bien créer sur ses claviers, Maïlys Maronne a su s’entourer d’un saxophoniste alto au lyrisme immédiat et rayonnant et d’une rythmique ccapable de grooves émaciés. Le batteur Tilo Bertholo, en particulier, impressionne. Pas du genre qui arrose un peu partout, non, mais du genre plutôt qui met tous ses coups dans le mille.
Parmi les morceaux joués ce soir, je retiens le très beau Rhinoféroce, avec sa petite mélodie orientale nue et tremblante (au début…) et ce Invitation rebaptisé à juste titre Cosmic Invitation, car tout se passe comme si ce vénérable standard était tombé dans un trou noir, délayé, étiré à l’extrème, et pourtant toujours reconnaissable .
Et quand la flûte de Magic Malik vient se rajouter au groupe sur le dernier morceau, Experimental Cycle, c’est un moment formidable, où l’on peut admirer notamment cette manière d’utiliser et de faire tourner les unissons (ici, souvent, flûte, sax, piano) qui donne une belle puissance d’envol à la musique. Merveilleuse et emballante découverte que ce groupe, dont j’écouterai le premier disque, Animus Volandi, pour constater qu’il répond en tout point à l’expérience enthousiasmante du concert.
