The first few months of 1970 were tumultuous for the Grateful Dead. They had been all over the country, from the Fillmore East to Hawaii and back, by way of New Orleans and St. Louis. They had fired their organ player, fired their manager, hired a new road manager and recorded an album. By 8th March, they had already played 34 shows. As near as anyone can tell, the sessions for Workingman's Dead were 16 - 19th February and then 9 - 16th March, when the basic tracks were completed. What has come to be known as the project tour - an east coast jaunt running 17th March through 29th March - was undertaken with the aim of composing a road song while on the aforementioned surface. Lyricist Robert Hunter had joined the tour for this express purpose and Truckin was written while the group allegedly hung around the pool in Dania, FL, just North of Miami, where they would also perform two gigs at the unlikely venue, Pirates World, an amusement park in the city which hosted rock gigs on weekends. An obscure event and a rare recording this brief performance (by Dead standards) is also a marvellous and dynamic occasion, and a legendary one for a number of reasons. Not least of these is that it concurred with the composition of a Dead classic that remains among the band s most popular and best known songs.Tracklist:
A worthwhile acquisition for fans of Pigpen/double drummer era Dead. Both the unusual set and the venue itself make this a unique offering from the period. Pirate's World was an amusement park in Dania, FL from 1967 through 1975, when it went bankrupt, partly because of the competition from Disney World. The park had an outdoor theater that booked in big name rock bands during it's existence. It was used to film a campy, amusing 1970 period-piece movie called Musical Mutiny, that featured a concert by Iron Butterfly. Also, part of the live Johnny Winter And album was recorded there. For the Dead, it presented two challenges 1) they had to play, what was for them, a short set and 2) they had to work their synergistic magic with an amusement park audience; this wasn't the Fillmore crowd.
The sound is very listenable. Plenty of bass range, but a tad muddy. The opening "Morning Dew" is joined in progress, and it., along with "Mama Tried", have some channel mixing issues, but are both listenable. "Dark Star" has a cut, however, given the fact that all of the jam pieces are truncated, there probably isn't too much missing. In some ways, this concert is like the concise second billing shows from Fillmore East 2-11-69 that were given official release.
The set itself is unique in it's jam-piece sequence, with "Dark Star">"The Other One">"St. Stephen">"NFA">Lovelight>Me And My Uncle shaking up the standard post-Live/Dead fare. "High Time" is performed as a stand alone song, rather than as the tail of a China Cat/Rider medley, as was common during the era. The "Dark Star" is performed at a brisk tempo, much like the slightly superior version from Monterey CA 6-14-69. Also notable is the band's almost telepathic transition from "Dark Star" into "The Other One", as well as an unusual and seamless transition from "Lovelight" into "M&MU".
A head's up about the media. The set is 83 minutes long and presented on one disc, so if you still use CDRs and want to burn a safety copy, you'll have to create a file and use two discs. Unfortunately, this will also create track separations in the jam sequence, which is a very unusual and well executed one at that.
