Nena - Solo Albums Collection 2001-2012 (11CD) [Re-Up]

Collection includes five solo studio albums, one live album and one compilation by German pop/rock star Nena.

Beginning in 1982, Nena became one of the most successful pop stars Germany had ever seen, especially given the unique success of the original German-language version of the single "99 Luftballons" in the U.S. in 1984. With the full name of Nena Kerner, she had spent one year as vocalist for the Stripes (who disbanded after just one unsuccessful album in 1980), then assembled a band in Berlin called Nena. The lineup included herself as vocalist, Carlo Karges on guitar, Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen on keyboards, Jürgen Dehmel on bass, and Rolf Brendel on drums. Their debut single, "Nur Geträumt," became a number one success in German-speaking countries after the band's first TV appearance on the Musikladen TV program on August 21, 1982.

"99 Luftballons" followed, quickly becoming a worldwide smash, although by mid-1985, sales of Nena's records, and the attendance numbers of her 1985 tour dates, dropped, which led to the eventual end of the band in mid-1987. Beginning in 1989, Nena worked as a solo artist, releasing albums of songs composed mainly by herself and befriended musicians she chose as co-authors. (She also chose not to have a permanent band, as had been the case in the '80s, either in the studio or on tour.) Her first solo tour came in 1993, then pregnancies led to minimal live appearances until 1997. She began touring again (mainly in Germany) once or twice a year, backed predominantly by U.S. musicians in addition to Germans.

Throughout the '90s, she could be seen regularly on German TV (hosting a variety show series called Metro in 1993). She stayed true to her unique musical blend of melodic vocals paired with various rock styles ranging from the Beatles to the harder sounds of the Rolling Stones and even the Ramones (with the harder rock sound being her preferred style when on tour). Beginning in 1990, she also made a number of albums specifically for children and did voice-overs or contributed songs to animated movies and cartoon series.

After an ambitious, electronic-based album from 2001 called Chokmah failed to garner attention, 2002 found Nena celebrating the 20th anniversary of her breakthrough with an album of new versions of her hits, Feat. Nena: Live. To everyone's surprise, the audience response was sensational, actually replicating the runaway success of 20 years before. The following double album of new material in 2005, Willst Du Mit Mir Gehn (half of which premiered a heavier rock style) again went platinum, indicating that she had indeed established a strong base among a new audience. The year 2007 saw the release of a covers album entitled Cover Me, which featured Nena's own versions of tracks by the likes of the Rolling Stones and Moby. In 2009, she released Made in Germany, her 16th studio album, followed by Made in Germany Live and Best of Nena, both appearing in 2010. Du Bist Gut was released two years later. Combining elements of new wave, punk, and contemporary EDM, Oldschool arrived in 2015 and continued her over-ten-year string of Top Ten albums in her homeland.

Warning: Too much Chokmah can upset your equilibrium. Not even Nena herself expected this album to become what it turned out to be. From 1999 to spring 2001 she had written a sizeable collection of (unreleased) new songs, some of which she had even started playing on-stage during those years to great effect. Nevertheless, in a unique decision, as soon as her new producer and songwriting partner, Florian Sitzmann, suggested that she disregard those songs and start the new album with him from scratch, she agreed. The resulting songs they created turned out to be a clear departure from what anyone was ever used to from Nena. Listeners suddenly find her engulfed in soundscapes that bear close relation to those used by Björk or Radiohead (featured elements ranging from electronics to symphony orchestra), which also means that this album's mood is radically different from all her previous albums. In keeping with that, Nena's singing is uncharacteristically sullen, but with the added surprise bonus of odd new kinds of flourishes that pop up during the journey through this album's strange new territory – even oriental-sounding melody lines make a number of fitting appearances throughout. Nena took her cue for this album from one lone lyric fragment ("Das schockt mein system," meaning "shocking my system") and its sound affinity to a term from Jewish Kabbala mysticism that she had heard of by chance around that time: "chokmah" (meaning – among other things – wisdom/energy/transformation). That might look like Nena has "gone new age," but luckily that's not the case. All the lyrics of the new songs are variations on one common theme (a theme that Nena has touched on regularly throughout her career): contemplating the worth of consciously facing life's contradictions and trying to transform that consciousness into a kind of creative energy. The album sort of asks the question: How does it feel to try to live life without holding on to any "isms" anymore? Nena obviously recommends that approach for herself, but – in keeping with the openness of that approach- there is nothing dogmatic about the lyrics. Although that's pretty life-affirming, it's not a very comfortable proposition as such, and the combined weight of the album's songs is not easy to bear. What we do have here, however, is the most ambitious collection of music Nena has ever presented. Although some of the songs slightly suffer from over-arrangement, there are a number of absolute triumphs on this album. The highlights (about 50 percent of the album) are perfectly arranged, confidently elegant, and powerful songs like "Silbermond" or "Du Gibst," to name but two. The other half of the songs are close behind in quality, but watch out – there's no denying the downbeat feel of the album when listened to as a whole. Listened to individually, however, these new songs are quite a joy – the difference in effect really is that pronounced. For instance, when listening all the way through the length of the album (at over 70 minutes, it's Nena's longest-ever album), after all the studied elegance, it's quite a relief to hear Nena reverting to rocking-out mode on the hidden track at the end – and that's a trait she made clear (in interviews after the album's release) that she was in fact not about to give up. The intention was rather to integrate her newfound style and scope into the kind of music she's famous for.

It was Nena's all-important follow-up album, after the spectacular return to massive success brought on by her 20th anniversary album, Nena Feat. Nena (a triumph of marketing, especially considering the uncharacteristically below-par content of those re-recordings of past hits – commonly a dubious exercise even for the best of artists). The album's title asks Willst Du mit Mir Gehen? (Are You Going With Me?) and the newly won audience indeed did "go along" by again securing platinum status. The double set (one "red" CD, one "orange") mirrors Nena's newly disjointed take on music: the "red" album (recorded mainly in Berlin) initially just seems like an unambitious return to simplicity (after the intricate Chokmah album of 2001). Worse still, it begins with two of four disco-based songs (a "style" she had always been wise enough to avoid until then). But never fear, that can easily be discounted (as inexplicable as it is), in comparison to the remaining three quarters of this lavish double set. In fact, the "orange" album (culled from spontaneous sessions with her touring band during a summer break on the Spanish island of Mallorca) turns out to be a sensational step forward: Nena finally takes the no-holds-barred plunge into the kind of music that she grew up admiring but had never fully used for her own songwriting. What you get here is mostly slow-moving, free-flowing, expansive rock, somber but soothing music, fully enveloping the listener in warm soundscapes, echoing elements of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin (including the latter's Asian influences). These songs are very much about irritation and a lack of obvious solutions – a revolutionary break from Nena's usual conciliatory image. But there lies the logic of putting the "red" and "orange" albums into one set: to expand the usual spectrum. Knowing the "orange" album, it becomes clear that its influence also "radiates" into a portion of the "red" songs. Some of those are simple but "classic Nena," like the top hit ballad "Liebe Ist," or the beautifully balanced "Immer Weiter," but others already touch on the special "flowing atmosphere" that dominates the "orange" part. By just indulging (including keeping the lyrics really basic and "simple") and disregarding the pressure of "having to make it this time," Nena found the right path, and richly set the stage for further developments.

Two years in the making, Cover Me is Nena's "double helping" of cover versions, taking in an hour-long history tour of Anglo-American songs on one CD, and over an hour of delving into the (often more recent) German music landscape on the other. Nena's original idea was to take a break from her own songwriting and interpret a number of songs that inspired her to become a singer during the '70s (and provided her with emotional shelter, hence the album title). The impressive first third of the English album goes straight for Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan classics, "The Last Time" and "It's All Over Now Baby Blue" bouncing along at a slightly livelier pace than the originals and "She's a Rainbow" blazing with sweetness and color, then things slow right down to a meander through Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You," which leads into the stylistically uneven middle third. Uneven also because the songs here chosen from the '90s can't really compete with the rock-solid classics from further back that hold this half of the project together. (By the way, don't worry – no German accent anywhere, another of Nena's talents!) Probably the biggest surprise is that Nena manages to pull off the feat of tackling "Blowin' in the Wind" while seriously updating it to fit into louder and less hopeful times, thus proving that she indeed knows a thing or two about new wave coarseness, even though the bulk of Cover Me proves how rooted she is in the hopeful, ambitious culture of the '60s. And the '70s, for that matter: David Bowie's "Starman" and "Heroes" (the latter on the German CD) cover both poles of that decade's euphoric and downtrodden phases. The last third impresses most, with a classy 'n' sassy short sharp version of "Big Yellow Taxi," a slinky but almost faithful rendering of the mighty "Children of the Revolution" (not fixing what ain't broke!), and ending with the solemn trio of "After the Goldrush," "Us and Them," and Peter Gabriel's more recent (heavy but intricate) masterpiece on inner demons, "Darkness."

Darkness being a leitmotif of Nena's releases this decade, the selections on the German CD indeed tend to pull the listener to the dark side, be it via the classic German new wave urgency of "Eiszeit" ("Ice Age"), or the remarkable dark party bounce of the irresistible "Remmi Demmi" (originating in this very decade). Much of the rest is, however, left to balladry of various sorts, some of it pastoral, some lighter hearted, but always emphatic. Especially for those who understand German, this half of the album is not necessarily an easy emotional ride. Climaxing in grand '60s orchestral jazz-tinged style, "Das Jahr 2000" ("The Year 2000") is excavated from Hildegard Knef's songbook, and the juxtaposition of the song's musings on what the (then) future would hold and our current knowledge of how things actually turned out makes for a surprising and thoughtful (and elegantly beautiful) ending. It also relates straight back to the sentiment of the only new non-cover song, at the beginning of the album, "Mach Die Augen Auf," a wake up call to "open our eyes" – (another of those '60s traditions, but embedded here in a spaced out '70s/'90s rock vibe). Throughout the broad landscape of the album then, Nena's hope seems to be that listeners might also find a sense of shelter from the songs she's selected here.

The album title sure makes you wonder: Made in Germany? That could stand for all kinds of concepts or angles. (By the way, unlike half of the preceding Cover Me album, this one is not sung in English but, as usual, in German!) Nothing too intellectual or conceptual at all, in fact, the title track just intends to be a feel-good statement about where you come from and where you feel at home, in Nena's case, of course, Germany. End of story. (The sound? By turns romantic, dark, forceful, comparable in atmosphere to "Atomic" by Blondie.) Actually, though, it's no mean feat to write a catchy, unproblematic, feel-good song about a country that's been dissected by countless (and justified) highbrow ponderings concerning its role in history. Nena pulls it off, though, and puts it in the midst of an album that sees her return to simple pleasures all around, which is what these songs are basically all about. Euphoria is the main theme throughout. It zaps right in with the powerful "SchönSchönSchön," bouncing along on the "Green Onions" groove with some synth stabs and some Duane Eddy guitar for good measure. Nena's voice comes on full and strong (as throughout this album), singing about the pleasures of "you and me" and, basically, the thrill of it all, plain and simple. It doesn't stop there; most of the first half of the album continues on that theme, but other subjects also start creeping in, and in the second half the mood shifts from happy-go-lucky to somber and philosophical (all the while keeping things light and lucid, nevertheless). The simplicity is the big surprise here, after a rather ambitious decade of branching out into realms of music she hadn't attempted before, Nena obviously felt more like going into holiday mode this time. A bit of a "spiritual holiday," one could call it, though, because the lyrics are laced with all kinds of references to "what it all might mean" (love, time, life, separation, togetherness, joy, pain) but the language stays simple, often even a bit childlike.

Nena is, of course, no stranger to children's songs. This album was made after the children's album Himmel, Sonne, Regen und Wind. With hindsight, that album was remarkable for the exquisite care that obviously went into the (very natural) quality of the sound. All the more puzzling is the general tendency of the production on Made in Germany, which generally has a slightly synthetic feel to it. It's not an ideal fit for all the songs (except for a few in the first half that lamentably tend toward a kind of '80s nostalgia sound, quite untypical of Nena's usual style spectrum, and not the strongest material here). Moreover, Nena's touring band is strangely not the main "sound carrier" here – many of the instruments were played by Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen, Derek von Krogh, and Reinhold Heil (all of them professional keyboarders), who, together with Nena, also produced the album (and co-wrote most of it). So, maybe a case of too many cooks (of the same kind?). That said, it's still an enjoyable album with a number of highlights and stylistic flavors. Apart from the opener and the title track (as described), first single "Wir Sind Wahr" (We're for Real) is a very welcoming, grand, and elegantly beautiful song, a poetic highlight of the euphoric strand of the album. "Ich Bin Hyperaktiv" (I'm Hyperactive) speed rocks its way forward to debunk the concept of the "hyperactive child" being a medical condition in need of treatment. "In Meinem Leben" (In My Life) provides a touching glimpse of autobiographical thoughts on Nena's life so far. "Schmerzen" (Pain) has a meditative, Indian undercurrent to it; "Ganz Viel Zeit" (Lots of Time), with Nena's 19-year-old son Sakias on (laid-back and soulful) lead vocals for the first time, continues the album's gradual elegant "comedown" vibe in the last quarter. This leads into the final "Nachts Wenn Es Warm Ist" (At Night When It's Warm), a Thommie Bayer song reflecting on the feelings of separation and reunion that people experience at railway stations. An unexpectedly simple, straight-ahead album, both lighthearted and thoughtful in equal measure.

Made In Germany Live is a two-CD live album by German pop singer Nena, released on 17 September 2010. It contains her live performance at Berlin on 24 April 2010, with bonus tracks from concert dates in 2009 and 2010 on the special edition of the album. The bonus tracks include two songs by Nena’s first band, The Stripes. Of the 27 tracks featured in the album, 11 were from the “Made in Germany” album which the concert tour was promoting. Of the remaining 16, ten are songs from the 1980s and six from the 2000s, leaving Nena’s work from the 1990s (the most productive decade of her solo career in terms of new material) completely unrepresented.

Du bist gut (“You’re Good”) is the 16th studio album of the German pop singer Nena. The album was recorded in Iceland and released on 2 November 2012 by The Laugh and Peas Company, the record label run by Nena and her partner Philipp Palm. The cover artwork is designed by Nena’s daughter Larissa, and her son Sakias duets with her on a couple of tracks. The album peaked at #2 in the German album charts.

Du bist gut comprises one CD of 15 songs (14 original, 1 reworking of a 2001 album track), and the “deluxe bonus edition” has a second CD comprising studio reworkings and live performances of earlier recordings.

The album covers many of the themes running through Nena’s previous work, “Freiheit” (Freedom) and “Frieden” (Peace) being obvious examples. However it differs from many of its predecessors in that there are fewer fast songs and in “Ich habe dich verloren” (I have lost you) Nena writes an unremittingly bleak lyric, which is unusual for one so accustomed to put a positive spin on all sorts of setbacks and misfortune. As ever, Nena experiments with stylistic variations including the 7-minute synthpop title track and the acoustic guitar backed “Lautlos” (Silently) which intimately showcases her voice and carefully crafted enunciation like few others have in her 30-year career.
