Rarely have I read a sleeve-note that pleads so vehemently in support of the music it introduces as does the one for this collection of works by Henry Lawes. ''I wish this record well,'' writes Anthony rooley, ''for Harry's [Henry's] sake, so that our un-sung genius of song may occupy his rightful place in the halls of Fame, and the late 20th century adopt the same conclusions as his own time''. Certainly you may find it surprising that a composer whose music was praised by such towering contemporaries as Charles I, Milton and Locke should have been neglected so universally by today's champions of early music—surprising, that is, until you hear the music itself. Lawes faces us with a dilemma, for his natural mode of expression inclines neither to lyricism nor to drama but rather to arioso, a form of rhetorical and often formulaic speech-song. As Sir John Hawkins rightly observed in the late eighteenth century, ''the music is neither recitative nor air, but is in so precise a medium between both, that a name is wanting for it''. The result is, in fact, quite easily described: sensitive word-setting and evanescent, unmemorable music.
To say as much is not to deny that this record has many merits. Rooley correctly observes that these songs and psalms require the services of ''a finely attuned performer with a natural love of the cavalier world to bring out the subtle nuances which are the glory of his art'', and it would be difficult to imagine a group of singers more finely attuned to them than The Consort of Musicke. If Lawes does not convince you in these performances, then you many as well pass him over altogether. There are some splendid contributions here, especially from Mary Nichols, whose alto voice now so closely resembles Emma Kirkby's that each seems a natural extension in range of the other. Just occasionally the music gives rise to something absolutely breathtaking, as at the very end of the dialogue for two sopranos, This mossy bank (sung by Kirkby and Evelyn Tubb), and there is even a little humour, most cospicuous in the spoff aria In quel gelato core, with its nonsense text made out of the list of contents from a contemporary Italian song-book. After listening to the collection several times, however, I couldn't help feeling that the talents of The Consort of Musicke might more profitably have been directed towards some more remarkable music. Perhaps Henry Lawes should be left to rest in peace, though this is an opinion that you ought to test for yourself.'
