If Alternative 4 feels like a rushed album, it’s because, somehow, it is. Prior to its recording, the Cavanagh brothers witnessed the death of their mother: the event is commemorated in the album’s cover artwork, which represents a burial place inside an angel’s shroud. The album’s main theme is based on betrayal. But not the typical relationship issues treated like a game by Chad Kroeger, but rather the realization that the importance of relationships and friendships can be understood only when lost forever, in favor of some sort of “ignorance of convenience” in order to make thoughts of misanthropy, nihilism and suicide hit as much later as possible: a battle against nothing made quietly by every human on Earth, yet widely accepted and practiced by the modern society like an elephant in the room.
The retarding of the inevitable is a similar build-up for Alternative 4. Duncan Patterson was inspired by a similarly misanthropic book titled Alternative 3, which contemplates the destruction of Earth or, at least, of the unimportant wide mass of the world’s population. The music that composes the album is a collection of minimalist, pseudo-atmospheric cuts with little variation in tone and techniques used: pretty much like Tool and Pink Floyd, here Anathema stick to a groove and repeat it endlessly. The uncomplicated formula spreads wide apathy, as comprehensible on the D drone on the title track, “Lost Control” and “Regret”’s use of banal and predictable A-minor/E-minor chords and melodies. “Fragile Dreams” is a hooky 4/4 pseudo-single, and even “Empty” follows a similarly catchy route with Post-Grunge dynamics. “Re-Connect” and “Feel” are two semi-ballads with wide dynamics, while “Shroud of False”, “Inner Silence” and “Destiny” are shorter interludes that synthesize the album’s concept and tone with their scarce lyrics. Of note is the use of electric organ sounds.
On a conceptual level, the album is admirable: the concept, coupled with the laziness of the compositions and the claustrophobic, suffocating cover artwork makes for an album that’s also very concrete. This may be the album’s saving grace, because on a musical level, the album is a hit-and-miss affair: the most concise and snappy songs tend to be highlights, while the longest seem Pink Floyd outtakes of A Momentary Lapse of Reason. Daniel Cavanagh’s voice is truly charismatic, since, while not being really in tune, morphs into drones, whispers and sudden painful screams in a matter of seconds, as he was having a convulsion while recording the vocals. Nothing exceptional, but a successful merge of concrete and abstract.
