    CPO's investigation of the composers from Richard Strauss's circle, the group known as the Munich school, brings forth another genuine discovery: Hermann Bischoff. Born in Duisburg in 1868, this son of a steel manufacturer (!) quickly and purposefully found his way to music and to his model Richard Strauss, whom he greatly admired. Strauss, who was only four years his senior, very early and quite rightly recognized Bischoff's lyrical talent and high musical intelligence and encouraged him whenever and wherever he could. In 1906 Bischoff's one-hour first symphony was premiered in Essen; Strauss had planned to conduct the performance, but local intrigues kept him from doing so. He later conducted the work in an even more prominent setting: together with Tod und VerklSrung with the Vienna Philharmonic.
