A collection of Scofield's more reflective and tender music, which still retains the edge of his fertile musical mind. The guitarist selected and sequenced the twelve titles, ensuring that they would provide the most accurate picture of the gentle side of John Scofield.
The best thing about John Scofield is that he has such a unique and identifiable voice. He also has a unique vision. These are not your typical ballads and they are a unique take on ballads. The great thing about this recording is that these ballads vary in tempo and don't fall into any languid pace. There is a pulse and energy. In the midst of it all is John's unique playing and style. Contemporary, relevant, never clichéd. He has such a rich tone. While capable of much virtuosity, he never overplays. He is well accompanied in these pieces by David, Sanborn, Omar Hakim, Robert Aries and others. While they are ballads, each one is distinct from the other so you don't get the same mood or a limited range of moods. You can't go wrong here with any of these pieces. This not only one of my favorite John Scofield albums, it is also one of my favorite guitar albums period. The arrangements are so balanced and suited to each piece. Everything is in service to the pieces, John's playing, the arrangements, the solos. There are simultaneously romantic, soulful, groove based, jazzy and still relevant twenty some odd years later.
In an album of high points, the highest points are "Still Warm" which is so subtle in it's beginnings and then builds to strong ending with Omar Hakim, propeling things along as the pieces takes flight and then lands beautifully. "True Love" has a beautiful melody which is never syrupy, it conveys a sense of romance. "Time Marches On" grooves and has a nice bridge. Nice pacing. "Best Western" has this great country influence and he so perfectly melds it with jazz sensibilities. "Spy Vs. Spy" is another piece which is kind of abstract, it floats along with a blues and fusion ambience.
After so many years since I got this in 1990 on cassette and then bought it again on CD, I don't get tired of listening to it.Review by ND.NY, Amazon.com
