John Bull, an early example of the species of virtuoso performer/composer, lived in a time of cultural and political ferment in England. Unlike most of his contemporaries, however, he traveled extensively and became acquainted with the musical styles of other European countries, particularly the Netherlands.

One of the composers of the a golden age of English choral and keyboard music that includes Byrd and Tallis, Bull frequently used the "free-voiced" textures that mark the period of transition from Renaissance to early Baroque, yet his sacred music reflects the contrapuntal complexity of J.S. Bach. His intricate plainsong settings and hexachord fantasias for organ also show a continental influence; the virginal music is more English in character, and includes highly ornamented variations and fantasias. Under Bull's influence, the simple melodic style of popular songs and folk tunes became a starting-point for elaborate excursions into keyboard virtuosity; the anthems and multi-part canons are more direct in feeling, and preserve the formal structures of English masters such as Tallis.

Bob van Asperen is one of the most famous early music specialists for harpsichord, clavichord, and organ, and is also known as a conductor and musicologist.

Bob van Asperen was born in Amsterdam in 1947. His musical education began with lessons from his mother, and he later studied with Gustav Leonhardt and Albert de Klerk. A regular guest at important festivals throughout the world, his recitals include virtually the whole repertoire of keyboard literature from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. Bob van Asperen teaches a master class for harpsichord at the Amsterdam Conservatory.

To the extent that one can class miniatures as "great music", there is plenty on offer on this disc. Two or three of the most elaborately wrought artefacts for harpsichord come from this vastly underrated composer–check his first "In Nomine" and the "Fantastic Pavan and Galliard" with its astonishing chromatic texture. Everyone knows the "Kings Hunt", it is his best known piece. But you also find humour here, in "Doctor Bulls myself", a musical self-portrait–sardonic while insinuating high spirits–lasting all of 56 seconds (including repeat!). The "Canon in subdiapente" has to be heard to be believed. I'll leave that discovery for you!
Bob van Asperen plays with panache and wit. He is far superior to Colin Tilney, who is so serious that you can almost hear the wheels clicking over in his brain as he unravels the intricate contrapuntal variations. Asperen is not above letting some fun into his performances. The recording is not ideally clear, but this may be the instrument (a very old, restored original): some of the denser passage work tends to sound a little muddy (overtone rich). But otherwise a very acceptable collection of Bull's pieces and a nice portrait in sound. Highly recommended.
