Why write another book on mechanics? There are, after all, a number of excellent texts that describe in great detail the way classical solids behave when acted upon by static and time-varying forces; many of these are cited in this monograph. These texts treat solids as continuous objects, and quantum mechanics does not enter the discussion. Furthermore, the atomic nature of the solid is implicit, but does not enter in a central role. At the other end of the spectrum, texts on condensed matter physics focus on the quantum mechanical nature of the solid; these contain quite clear descriptions of acou­ stic waves in solids, describing their dynamic and thermal properties, and how they interact with electrons in the solid, but contain little information regarding bulk deformations. This text, focussing on the mechanics of very small objects, attempts to provide a link between these two approaches; in addition to describing the theories of both the classical and the quantum mechanical solid, I attempt to outline where the classical description breaks down, and quantum mechanics must be applied, to understand the behavior of a nanoscale object. I have tried to merge the continuum description of the solid with the atomic one, and to show how and where quantum mechanics plays a role, especially as the size scale of the system is reduced, making the quantized energy scale larger and the role of thermal vibrations more important.

The present volume offers a state-of-the-art report on the various recent sci­ entific developments in the Theory of Porous Media (TPM) comprehending the basic theoretical concepts in continuum mechanics on porous and mul­ tiphasic materials as well as the wide range of experimental and numerical applications. Following this, the volume does not only address the sophisti­ cated reader but also the interested beginner in the area of Porous Media by presenting a collection of articles. These articles written by experts in the field concern the fundamental approaches to multiphasic and porous materials as well as various applications to engineering problems. In many branches of engineering just as in applied natural sciences like bio- and chemomechanics, one often has to deal with continuum mechanical problems which cannot be uniquely classified within the well-known disci­ plines of either "solid mechanics" or "fluid mechanics". These problems, characterized by the fact that they require a unified treatment of volumetri­ cally coupled solid-fluid aggregates; basically fall into the categories of either mixtures or porous media. Following this, there is a broad variety of problems ranging in this category as for example the investigation of reacting fluid mix­ tures or solid-fluid suspensions as well as the investigation of the coupled solid deformation and pore-fluid flow behaviour of liquid- and gas-saturated porous solid skeleton materials like geomaterials (soil, rock, concrete, etc. ), polymeric and metallic foams or biomaterials (hard and soft tissues, etc).

The idea for this book was developed in the seminar on problems of con­ tinuum mechanics, which has been active for more than twelve years at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University, Prague. This seminar has been pursuing recent directions in the development of mathe­ matical applications in physics; especially in continuum mechanics, and in technology. It has regularly been attended by upper division and graduate students, faculty, and scientists and researchers from various institutions from Prague and elsewhere. These seminar participants decided to publish in a self-contained monograph the results of their individual and collective efforts in developing applications for the theory of variational inequalities, which is currently a rapidly growing branch of modern analysis. The theory of variational inequalities is a relatively young mathematical discipline. Apparently, one of the main bases for its development was the paper by G. Fichera (1964) on the solution of the Signorini problem in the theory of elasticity. Later, J. L. Lions and G. Stampacchia (1967) laid the foundations of the theory itself. Time-dependent inequalities have primarily been treated in works of J. L. Lions and H. Bnlzis. The diverse applications of the variational in­ equalities theory are the topics of the well-known monograph by G. Du­ vaut and J. L. Lions, Les iniquations en micanique et en physique (1972).

This book is derived from notes used in teaching a first-year graduate-level course in elasticity in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. This is a modern treatment of the linearized theory of elasticity, which is presented as a specialization of the general theory of continuum mechanics. It includes a comprehensive introduction to tensor analysis, a rigorous development of the governing field equations with an emphasis on recognizing the assumptions and approximations in­ herent in the linearized theory, specification of boundary conditions, and a survey of solution methods for important classes of problems. Two- and three-dimensional problems, torsion of noncircular cylinders, variational methods, and complex variable methods are covered. This book is intended as the text for a first-year graduate course in me­ chanical or civil engineering. Sufficient depth is provided such that the text can be used without a prerequisite course in continuum mechanics, and the material is presented in such a way as to prepare students for subsequent courses in nonlinear elasticity, inelasticity, and fracture mechanics. Alter­ natively, for a course that is preceded by a course in continuum mechanics, there is enough additional content for a full semester of linearized elasticity.
