Primates and Their Relatives in Phylogenetic Perspective

Primates and Their Relatives in Phylogenetic Perspective by Ross D. E. MacPhee
English | PDF | 1993 | 390 Pages | ISBN : 0306444224 | 42.6 MB

This unique volume investigates the relationships of primates at the ordinal and higher classificatory levels from a variety of interdisciplinary viewpoints. Individual chapters examine the origin and evolution of gliding in early Cenozoic Dermoptera, the ontogeny of the tympanic floor in Archontans, the role of the neurosciences in primate evolutionary biology, and many other subjects. The work will be of particular interest to primatologists, zoologists, and systematists.

The Hungarian Nominal Functional Sequence

The Hungarian Nominal Functional Sequence

The Hungarian Nominal Functional Sequence by Éva Dékány
English | EPUB (True) | 2021 | 287 Pages | ISBN : 3030634396 | 9.7 MB

The Hungarian Nominal Functional Sequence combines the methods of syntactic cartography with evidence from compositional semantics in a comprehensive exploration of the structure of Noun Phrases. Proceeding from the lexical core to the top of DP, it uses Hungarian as a window on the underlying universal functional hierarchy of Noun Phrases, but it also regularly complements and supports the analysis with cross-linguistic evidence. The book works out a minimal map of the extended NP in the sense that the proposed hierarchy only has projections which host overt material and it does not draw on semantically empty word order projections. Topics which receive special attention include the syntax of classifiers, demonstratives, proper names, possessive NPs and plural pronouns.

Paradigm Structure and Predictability in Latin Inflection: An Entropy-based Approach by Matteo Pellegrini
English | PDF | 2023 | 194 Pages | ISBN : 3031248430 | 3.6 MB

Latin paradigms are almost proverbially known, and they have often been used as a test case for different theoretical approaches to morphological complexity. This book analyses them in a completely word-based perspective, using a recently developed information-theoretic methodology, making entropy-based techniques of analysis available to a wider readership. By doing so, it shows the relevance of traditional notions like principal parts, giving them a more principled, data-driven formulation. Furthermore, it suggests enhancements to the standard information-theoretic methodology, allowing to account for the role of external factors – like gender and derivational information – in improving predictability between inflected word forms.

The Mathematics of Urban Morphology by Luca D'Acci
English | EPUB | 2019 | 564 Pages | ISBN : 3030123804 | 102.5 MB

This edited volume provides an essential resource for urban morphology, the study of urban forms and structures, offering a much-needed mathematical perspective. Experts on a variety of mathematical modeling techniques provide new insights into specific aspects of the field, such as street networks, sustainability, and urban growth. The chapters collected here make a clear case for the importance of tools and methods to understand, model, and simulate the formation and evolution of cities.

Arabic Computational Morphology: Knowledge-based and Empirical Methods by Abdelhadi Soudi
English | PDF | 2007 | 306 Pages | ISBN : 1402060459 | 7.5 MB

The morphology of Arabic poses special challenges to computational natural language processing systems. The exceptional degree of ambiguity in the writing system, the rich morphology, and the highly complex word formation process of roots and patterns all contribute to making computational approaches to Arabic very challenging. Indeed many computational linguists across the world have taken up this challenge over time, and many of the researchers with a track record in this research area have contributed to this book.

This book provides essential information on the morphology, biology, phytochemistry, pharmaceutical prospects, evolution, phylogeny, biogeography, and taxonomy of Paris (Melanthiaceae), a morphologically distinctive plant genus with great economic importance. Since the establishment of this genus, 70 species and 24 subspecific taxa have been described, resulting in considerable confusion in species delimitation.

Handbook of Mathematical Methods in Imaging, Second Edition By Otmar Scherzer
English | PDF (Repost), EPUB | 2015 | 2176 Pages | ISBN : 1493907891 | 82 MB

The Handbook of Mathematical Methods in Imaging provides a comprehensive treatment of the mathematical techniques used in imaging science. The material is grouped into two central themes, namely, Inverse Problems (Algorithmic Reconstruction) and Signal and Image Processing. Each section within the themes covers applications (modeling), mathematics, numerical methods (using a case example) and open questions. Written by experts in the area, the presentation is mathematically rigorous.

50 Years of Bat Research: Foundations and New Frontiers by Burton K. Lim
English | EPUB | 2021 | 375 Pages | ISBN : 3030547264 | 34.7 MB

With more than 1,400 species, bats are an incredibly diverse and successful group of mammals that can serve as model systems for many unique evolutionary adaptations. Flight has allowed them to master the sky, while echolocation enables them to navigate in the dark. Being small, secretive, nocturnal creatures has made bats a challenge to study, but over the past 50 years, innovative research has made it possible to dispel some of the mystery and myth surrounding them to give us a better understanding of the role these animals play in the ecosystem.
