Medical Decision Making: A Health Economic Primer Second Edition by Stefan Felder , Thomas Mayrhofer
English | PDF (True) | 2017 | 262 Pages | ISBN : 3662571374 | 6 MB

This textbook offers a comprehensive analysis of medical decision making under uncertainty by combining Test Information Theory with Expected Utility Theory. The book shows how the parameters of Bayes’ theorem can be combined with a value function of health states to arrive at informed test and treatment decisions. The authors distinguish between risk-neutral, risk-averse and prudent decision makers and demonstrate the effects of risk preferences on physicians’ decisions. They analyze individual tests, multiple tests and endogenous tests where the test outcome is chosen by the decision maker. Moreover, the topic is examined in the context of health economics by introducing a trade-off between enjoying health and consuming other goods, so that the extent of treatment and thus the potential improvement in the patient’s health becomes endogenous. Finally, non-expected utility models of choice under risk and uncertainty (i.e. ambiguity) are presented. While these models can explain observed test and treatment decisions, they are not suitable for normative analyses aimed at providing guidance on medical decision making.

Blockchain in Healthcare: Analysis, Design and Implementation by Chang Lu, Mohan Tanniru
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2023 | 205 Pages | ISBN : 3031453387 | 15 MB

This books brings readers a holistic understanding of blockchain adoption in healthcare by not only considering the technical fundamentals of use cases, but also the regulatory, informational and organizational challenges and solutions. The book also provides frameworks and toolkits to manage the entire life cycle of adoption, including analysing the environment and feasibility, application design from a user-centred perspective, and implementation strategies that would overcome organizational and informational barriers. Specific issues addressed include but are not limited to: How to analyse the value propositions in healthcare and which distributed actors should be engaged to fulfil these propositions? What policies and practices need to be reviewed to ensure security and privacy of the information shared? How to design blockchain systems that seamlessly integrate with other stakeholder applications, while only the needed information is in the distributed architecture? How can blockchain implementation be managed from governance and risk mitigation perspectives, especially when multiple actors are involved?

Sociomaterial Practices in Medical Work: An Ethnography in the Operating Room by Attila Bruni
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2023 | 141 Pages | ISBN : 3031448030 | 2.6 MB

This book presents a sociomaterial perspective on work and organizational practices within the operating room. Looking at medical work from a sociological perspective and drawing on ethnographic observations conducted in a hospital's operating block, this book analyses the entanglements of humans and technologies in the execution of everyday activities. It highlights how the sociomateriality of work and organizational practices manifests in the encounters between operators and material artifacts and in the way objects and technologies participate in processes and practices of organizational communication. Objects and technologies are also shaped by these very practices, giving rise to a recursive relationship wherein technology, communication, and organizing are intertwined.

AI and Blockchain in Healthcare by Bipin Kumar Rai, Gautam Kumar, Vipin Balyan
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2023 | 241 Pages | ISBN : 9819903769 | 26.9 MB

This book presents state-of-the-art blockchain and AI advances in health care. Healthcare service is increasingly creating the scope for blockchain and AI applications to enter the biomedical and healthcare world. Today, blockchain, AI, ML, and deep learning are affecting every domain. Through its cutting-edge applications, AI and ML are helping transform the healthcare industry for the better. Blockchain is a decentralization communication platform that has the potential to decentralize the way we store data and manage information. Blockchain technology has potential to reduce the role of middleman, one of the most important regulatory actors in our society. Transactions are simultaneously secure and trustworthy due to the use of cryptographic principles. In recent years, blockchain technology has become very trendy and has penetrated different domains, mostly due to the popularity of cryptocurrencies. One field where blockchain technology has tremendous potential is health care, due to the need for a more patient-centric approach in healthcare systems to connect disparate systems and to increase the accuracy of electronic healthcare records (EHRs).

In the current era, evidence-based medicine and various supporting technologies dominate everyday clinical practice, according to a disease-centred, as opposed to patient-centred, approach. They have obviously improved the clinical management of diseases and it is therefore unreasonable to think of a medicine in which they are not considered fundamental. In fact, the strength of the new medicine should be to adapt scientific knowledge to a specific clinical case.
