This album portraits the Finnish composer Sebastian Hilli, born in 1990 and thus one of the youngest composers ever to be featured on a KAIROS release. Hilli's works have in common the composer's fascination with structure, dynamism and carefully crafted details. Throughout, his music is characterized by complex woven textures and nuanced sonorities, long-span processes and a flair for extra-musical topics. The Uusinta Ensemble performs a diverse selection of three of Hilli's works - this is certainly a composer to watch!

Vladimir Ashkenazy's style of conducting, not dissimilar to his keyboard style, is unmatched in the development of long climaxes, exploding in the end with a surge of precise power. Sibelius is one of the composers most suited to his style, and you can confidently pick from among his recordings of the Finnish master. His reading here of the Symphony No. 1 in E minor, Op. 39, the most purely Tchaikovskian work among Sibelius' seven symphonies, is among the very best available, with awe-inspiring control in the development of the first-movement material and the emergence of a superbly responsive instrument in the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, whose recordings of large-orchestra music in recent years have been second to none.

Conductor Nicholas Collon’s second Sibelius album together with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra focuses on works written by Sibelius during or just before World War I, and culminating in the 5th Symphony, one of the composer’s symphonic key works. Two opuses for violin and orchestra, Two Serenades and Two Serious Melodies, one of Sibelius’ most religious works, are featuring star violinist Christian Tetzlaff. Sibelius’ music for Strindberg’s Symbolistic play Swanwhite is a rarely performed gem with interesting thematic connections to other works included on this album, including the 5th Symphony.

Royal Winter Music by Hans Werner Henze (1926–2012) and Nocturnal after John Dowland by Benjamin Britten (1913–1976) were both inspired by the culture of Elizabethan England in the late 16th and early 17th centuries; more precisely, by the plays of William Shakespeare (1564–1616) and the music of lutenist-composer John Dowland (1563–1626). Henze and Britten both drew on tradition, and they shared a special liking for vocal music. They both composed a lot for the voice, and the guitar works on this release are likewise very lyrical in places.

The idea for this CD developed during a recording of the Fantasy No. 7, and quickly established its own momentum. What began as a spontaneous thought experiment soon demanded fulfilment, and morphed swiftly into the desire to take part in the reawakening of this music. What followed was months of intensive dialogue with, and examination of, the 12 Fantasies by Telemann. Having first studied modern cello Renate Mundi discovered her passion for baroque music, and for the viola da gamba in particular. Her enthusiasm for the special characteristics of the instrument, as well as her interest in source studies, including the search for undiscovered scores, was fostered by Prof.

Printed by Bartolomeo Magni in Venice in 1641, this third book, whose full title emphasizes Ferrari’s three activities (as poet, singer, and theorbist), also affirms that the author considers himself a poet and sets only his own texts to music. This 34-page collection contains seventeen pieces for solo voice and basso continuo on which, according to Alessandro Magini, “the sophistication of monophonic chant and the refinement of the harmonic-rhythmic structure that make enforcement difficult at a point as only the greatest virtuosos of the court were able to execute them.» It is no coincidence that Ferrari dedicated his collections for voice and continuo to the world of the court.

Women in music, either as composers, performers, or inspirational figures, are never celebrated enough. This CD presents great examples of brilliant feisty women who, amongst the barriers imposed on them at the time, managed to survive history and leave their mark. These women charmed the courts of Italy, France and England with their talent and managed to create their unique musical expression, which deserves a lot more attention in our present time. Featuring the dramatic expression of early Baroque as noted on the works by Francesca Caccini and Barbara Strozzi as well as the flamboyant and groundbreaking pieces by Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre and Elisabetta de Gambarini.

For years the star cellist and Opus Klassik laureate Raphaela Gromes has taken up the cause of women composers. Three of her albums, acclaimed by critics and listeners alike, have featured music by unknown women composers, and she maintains a long-term working relationship with the "Frau und Musik" Archive in Frankfurt. So it is only natural that her new double album, FEMMES, should lend a voice to outstanding women from nine centuries of music history. No fewer than 23 woman composers found their way onto the double album, from Hildegard of Bingen to Clara Schumann all the way to Lera Auerbach and Billie Eilish, not to mention such famous operatic figures as Susanna from Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro or Bizet's Carmen.

The Prague Chamber Orchestra contributes some very good string playing to this Mozart reading by Sir Charles Mackerras. The approach is modern but well informed, with clean, light, agile, and luminous results. Mackerras observes the repeats (including that of the first movement recapitulation) and chooses excellent tempos. The Romance is especially lovely. Telarc's recording yields a fairly realistic concert-hall perspective, but the distant pickup and reverberation tend to muddy the texture a little. The coupling is an excellent account of the Posthorn Serenade.

Now he turns to the music of J. S. Bach, with three works whose obscure early performance history belies their status as repertoire staples for modern guitarists.

A contemporary of Mozart, Johann Christoph Vogel also died at an early age. Forward looking in approach, this composer of a tormented disposition, sought to extend the operatic revolution undertaken by Gluck in the 1770s. First performed in 1786 at the Opéra de Paris, 'La Toison d’or' reveals that search for an expressive art which demanded an all-embracing involvement from the performers and supplied the music with a sometimes unbearable intensity for audiences of the time.

Recording Bach's six Cello Suites realized Emmanuelle Bertrand's most cherished dream. Her performance here features an exceptional instrument, built by Carlo Tononi in Venice in 1730. This cello, with it's deep and powerful sound, has been set up in 'Baroque' style (with gut strings and bow to match). In Bertrand's hands it proves to be the perfect choice for tackling one of the most impressive monuments in all western music.

Like Mozart, Brahms was a bit uncomfortable writing string quartets, where the desire to maintain an absolutely democratic discourse among the participants often led to overly dense textures and rhythmic heaviness. The extra viola part offered by the quintet medium, however, allowed both composers to relax a bit and write music with the richness of texture they both loved, without forcing. These two works really don't seem to get the attention that they deserve, either on recordings or in concert, but they are both vintage Brahms. Fortunately, Naxos seems to be dedicated to a complete survey of the chamber music of the great composers, and they are working with a very fine stable of artists.
