“Double Standard” showcases the intimacy, fluidity, and strength of a non-traditional jazz duo. NYC-based Saxophonist Eli Hershiser and Guitarist Payton Kerkes provide us with spirited melodic improvisations over timeless jazz standards.

Anshel Brusilow was for many years the celebrated concertmaster of the legendary Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy. In 1965 he founded the Chamber Symphony of Philadelphia with whom he recorded six albums for RCA Victor until 1968, now available for the first time, freshly restored and as a 24-bit remaster. The wide-ranging repertoire of the carefully selected musicians extends from symphonies by Haydn and Cherubini to the First Serenade by Brahms and the Fourth Suite by Tchaikovsky to works by Arensky, Ibert, Wolf, R. Strauss, Ravel, Francaix and a haunting cantata by Richard Yardumian (a composer whom Eugene Ormandy also supported).

The view that simplicity is a virtue in scientific theories and that, other things being equal, simpler theories should be preferred to more complex ones has been widely advocated in the history of science and philosophy…

When the Berliner “Funk-Stunde” (“Radio Hour”) went out on the air on October 29, 1923, heralding the start of German radio, the first piece of music to be broadcast live was Fritz Kreisler’s Andantino in the Style of Martini. The fact that the era of the new mass medium began with an imitation of an old musical style is not without a certain irony – and reveals how little attention had been paid to the problem of music on the radio. It was indeed to be a further five years before the radio stations commissioned the first compositions for the medium. Here, under the heading of “generic radio music”, the following genres were defined: “radio suite, musical radio play, radio cantata, radio opera and symphonic light music”. Modern composers such as Paul Hindemith, Ernst Toch and Kurt Weill were all commissioned, along with light entertainment composers such as Edmund Nick, Mischa Spoliansky and Eduard Künneke.

When choosing the material to be recorded, I first became interested in the production of Lili Boulanger and quite by chance, around the same time, I received a hot tip from my colleague Niina Ranna about the relatively unknown Czech composer, Vítězslava Kaprálová. This turned out to be a lucky coincidence, because after getting to know the output of both, my attention was drawn to how the expressive tonal language of the two composers seemed to communicate with each other. Little by little, it started to become clear how much they actually had in common.

Suzy Bogguss is embracing a new chapter in her career with the release of a brand new album, Prayin’ For Sunshine. Prayin’ For Sunshine marks the first time Bogguss has penned an entire album. The impetus for the collection came during the global lockdown in 2020, when she reflected on her journey and felt compelled to share her experiences with her audience. It's a way of evaluating themselves, capturing their intrinsic energy and reflecting beyond appearances.

"Deep Purple in Concert" is a live album by the English hard rock band Deep Purple, recorded by the BBC for their "In Concert" live series in 1970 and 1972. First released in 1980 in the UK, with the current US edition being made available in 2001. In 2012, the contents of the 2nd disc were remixed and released as "In Concert '72", with the original set list in its correct order for the first time.

Italian pianist Maria Chiara Argirò’s album firmly falls into the contemporary Jazz camp and if you’re able to leave your prejudices aside, you’ll find a very beautiful album that will reap you rich rewards once you get into it. It has a strong, contemporary, urban, pulse that runs through it and, to my mind, also draws on some of the pastoral traditions of Folk. That it also manages to do this whilst remaining, on the whole, upbeat and absorbing in equal measure, is testimony to the skill of the composer and her collaborators.
