This collection of piano pieces by Gian Francesco Malipiero (Venice, 1882 – Treviso, 1973) almost seems to take us along a winding Venetian canal as we move through the moods of a composer who made the contamination between art and life the cornerstone of his existence. As he himself wrote in a letter to the French musicologist Henry Prunières in summer 1924: “My work is the barometer of my life”.

Coyote marks Dylan LeBlanc’s fifth studio album and his first full-length LP to be self-produced. Recorded at the iconic Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL, it boasts a handpicked ensemble of world renowned session players including Fred Eltringham, known for his work with Ringo Starr and Sheryl Crow, pianist Jim "Moose" Brown, who's collaborated with Bob Seger, and bassist Seth Kaufman, celebrated for his contributions to Lana Del Rey's tracks. The album is both semi-autobiographical and a concept album centered on the evocative character of Coyote, a man on the run in pursuit of an ever elusive freedom from his past.

A Swiss rockabilly combo, the Hillbilly Moon Explosion exists in a middle ground between the traditionalism of many rockabilly revival bands and the rougher, spookier sound of psychobilly. Founded by vocalist and rhythm guitarist Emanuela Hutter and bassist and vocalist Oliver Baroni, their music has more than its share of retro twang with Hutter's polished, enigmatic singing blending with the sometimes raucous, sometimes moody guitar lines, and they add dashes of punk, lounge pop, country, and even ska to season the evocative mix.

“Influences and Expressions,” a new album by the Arkansas Tech University Symphonic Wind Ensemble, was released by record label Tonsehen on Friday, Oct. 20. “Influences and Expressions” was recorded at Witherspoon Auditorium in November 2022 by Christian Amonson, former recording engineer for “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band. The project was made possible by the Pat and Roger Wattam Recording Series. The album includes “Slavdom” by Dr. Ksenija Komljenović, “DOPE” by Katahj Copley and “Song Book for Flute and Wind Ensemble” by David Maslanka.

It has been said that Anders Nordentoft’s music offers its listeners ‘an outstretched hand.’ His works are refreshingly free of dogma and take direct communication as their starting point, whether through clear narrative, sensual lyricism or an almost physical impulse that seizes the attention. The composer once claimed he set out to create music both ordinary and fantastic at the same time, like a normal day of the week. As demonstrated in the trio of delicate, gentle and recent sinfonietta pieces within this release, Nordentoft has displayed remarkable discipline concerning the structural coherence of his music, all the while imbuing it to convey the broader essence of life on Earth.

American-Australian harpist Emily Granger made an indelible impression with her solo debut recording, In Transit. She follows up with Something Like This, a beautiful collaboration with flautist Sally Walker, featuring original music for flute and harp alongside adaptations and arrangements for the instrumental combination. Woven among classics by J.S. Bach and Mozart are works by living composers including Australians Elena Kats-Chernin, Sally Greenaway, Lachlan Skipworth and Jessica Wells, and indigenous composer Christopher Sainsbury. 20th century works by Jacques Ibert and Witold Lutoslawski are juxtaposed with Erik Satie’s timeless Gymnopédies.

Kazakh-British artist Galya Bisengalieva returns this October with her second studio album for One Little Independent, Polygon. Like Galya’s 2020 debut album Aralkum the composer, producer and musician returns to stories from her home country of Kazakhstan. While Aralkum was about the shrinking of the Aral Sea, Polygon tells the tale of one of the darkest episodes in Kazakh history.
