In the past twenty years the Polish-born, Moscow-based Mieczysław Weinberg (1919–96) has been recognised as one of the major voices in twentieth-century music, equivalent in stature to his close friend Dmitry Shostakovich.

The piano music of the Czech-born composer Antoine Reicha (1770–1836) – friend of Haydn and Beethoven, teacher of Berlioz, Liszt and Franck – has only recently begun to be discovered.

A native of Minneapolis, 23-year-old pianist Kenny Broberg won the silver medal at the Fifteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition for performances that showed “an imaginative shaping of themes, revelation of inner voices, and an unfailing sense of momentum” (Texas Classical Review).

A versatile figure at home in lieder and in opera of several types, Katharina Konradi is the first major vocal star to emerge from the Central Asian nation of Kyrgyzstan. Based in Germany, Konradi has appeared in operas by Mozart, Strauss, and Wagner. Konradi was born on June 13, 1988, in the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek. Like many people in that city, formerly part of the Soviet Union, she grew up speaking Russian. At age 15, she moved to Hamburg, Germany. Although she spoke no German when she arrived, she succeeded in obtaining her Abitur (secondary school graduation) certificate at the Johannes-Brahms-Schule in Pinneberg in 2009.

With the "Something Blue" series of releases, my goal is to present a series of focused and concise performances to create maximum enjoyment. For this 2023 release, I specifically focused on assembling a group of talented composers. I selected some familiar collaborators; bassist Boris Kozlov, alto saxophonist Markus Howell and drummer Donald Edwards. I also chose some “new” faces as well; tenor saxophonist Willie Morris, trombonist Altin Sencalar, and pianist Misha Tsiganov. I hope this program of new compositions will encourage a wider audience of listeners to increase their engagement with Jazz, so it becomes their personal preference for musical entertainment. — Marc Free, producer

Despite its long history, the trombone has a very limited chamber music repertoire. Jörgen van Rijen, principal trombonist of the Concertgebouworkest, has wished to rectify this deficiency by initiating a fruitful collaboration between his own instrument and the string quartet, the pinnacle of chamber music.
