This unique and comprehensive text discusses the main causes of posterior hip pathology and recent advances in evaluation and treatment of those conditions, including posterior hip pain caused by discogenic, intrapelvic and extrapelvic disorders. Opening with description of the specific anatomy and biomechanics of the posterior hip and the etiology of hip disease, the next few chapters superbly discuss and illustrate the clinical, psychological and radiological assessment of the patient.

This volume (parts A and B) contains the edited papers presented at the annual Review of Progress in Quantitative NDE held at the University of California, San Diego, July 8-13, 1984. We have chosen to organize the papers by subject, an arrangement that we feel to be more useful for a reference volume than the order of paper presentation at the Review. To do this, topical subject headings have been selected under which the large majority of papers reasonably fall. These categories cover a broad spectrum of research in NDE and encompass activities from funda­ mental work to early engineering applications. The scope and depth of the Review may be easily assessed by examination of the Table of Contents. The Review was sponsored by the Center for Advanced NDE at the Ames Lab­ oratory of the U.S. Dept. of Energy in cooperation with the Office of Basic Energy Sciences, USDOE, the Materials Laboratory at Wright-Patterson AFB, and the Naval Sea Systems Command. Approximately 300 attendees re­ presenting various government agencies, industry, and universities parti­ cipated in the technical presentations, poster sessions, and discussions. This Review, possibly the most comprehensive annual symposium in NDE, provides a valuable forum for the timely exchange of technical informa­ tion. A few highlights of the Review are summarized in the following paragraphs.

An up-to-date and unparalleled in-depth treatment of all kinds of flow phenomena encountered in centrifugal pumps is given, including the complex interactions of fluid flow with vibrations and wear of materials. The scope includes all aspects of hydraulic design, 3D-flow phenomena and partload operation, cavitation, numerical flow calculations, hydraulic forces, pressure pulsations, noise, pump vibrations (notably bearing housing vibrations diagnostics and remedies), pipe vibrations, pump characteristics and pump operation, the effects of highly viscous flows, pumping of gas-liquid mixtures, hydraulic transport of solids, fatigue damage to impellers or diffusers, material selection under the aspects of fatigue, corrosion, erosion-corrosion or hydro-abrasive wear, pump selection, and hydraulic quality criteria. Information on the methods and procedures for the various calculations and failure diagnostics discussed in the text are presented in tables which may be considered almost unique in the open literature. This comprehensive handbook focuses on practical application in the industry and is free of mathematical or theoretical ballast. In order to find viable solutions in practice, the physical mechanisms involved must be thoroughly understood. The book is focused on fostering this understanding which will benefit the pump engineer in industry as well as academia and students.

This volume contains the proceedings of a five-day NATO Advanced Research Workshop "On Three Levels, the mathematical physics of micro-, meso-, and macro­ phenomena," conducted from July 19 to 23 in Leuven, Belgium. The main purpose of the workshop was to bring together and to confront where relevant, classical and quantum approaches in the rigorous study of the relation between the various levels of physical description. The reader will find here discussions on a variety of topics involving a broad range of scales. For the micro-level, contributions are presented on models of reaction-diffusion pro­ cesses, quantum groups and quantum spin systems. The reports on quantum disorder, the quantum Hall effect, semi-classical approaches of wave mechanics and the random Schrodinger equation can be situated on the meso-level. Discussions on macroscopic quantum effects and large scale fluctuations are dealing with the macroscopic level of description. These three levels are however not independent and emphasis is put on relating these scales of description. This is especially the case for the contributions on kinetic and hydrodynamicallimits, the discussions on large deviations and the strong and weak coupling limits. The advisory board was composed of J.L. Lebowitz, J.T. Lewis and E.H. Lieb. The organizing committee was formed by Ph.A. Martin, G.L. Sewell, E.R. Speer and A.

The progress in computer technology during the last 10-15 years has enabled the performance of ever more precise quantum mechanical calculations related to structure and interactions of chemical compounds. However, the qualitative models relating electronic structure to molecular geometry have not progressed at the same pace. There is a continuing need in chemistry for simple concepts and qualitatively clear pictures that are also quantitatively comparable to ab initio quantum chemical calculations. Topological methods and, more specifically, graph theory as a fixed-point topology, provide in principle a chance to fill this gap. With its more than 100 years of applications to chemistry, graph theory has proven to be of vital importance as the most natural language of chemistry. The explosive development of chemical graph theory during the last 20 years has increasingly overlapped with quantum chemistry. Besides contributing to the solution of various problems in theoretical chemistry, this development indicates that topology is an underlying principle that explains the success of quantum mechanics and goes beyond it, thus promising to bear more fruit in the future.

Nel corso del secolo scorso, il confine tra antropologia e letteratura si è spesso rivelato labile, soprattutto nell'ambito dell'etnografia. Questo volume esplora le dinamiche di questo rapporto complesso, sottolineando come la scrittura antropologica sia stata influenzata da tecniche narrative tipiche della letteratura, e viceversa. L'obiettivo è ribaltare la concezione tradizionale che separa nettamente l'immaginario scientifico da quello letterario, dimostrando come l'etnografia possa essere un terreno fertile per l'esplorazione creativa e l'immaginazione culturale. Attraverso l'analisi di opere classiche e meno note, si evidenzia come l'inclusione di testi precedentemente esclusi per motivi metodologici possa arricchire notevolmente la nostra comprensione delle diverse culture.
