    It is an incontestable fact that numerical analysis techniques are used rou­ tinely (although not always effectively) in virtually every quantitative field of scientific endeavor. In this book, which is directed toward upper-division and graduate level students in engineering and mathematics, we have selected for discussion subjects that are traditionally found in numerical analysis texts. But our choice of methodology rejects the traditional where analysis and experience clearly warrant such a departure, and one of our primary aspirations in this work is to equip the reader with the wherewithal to apply numerical analysis thinking to nontraditional subjects. For there is a plethora of computer-oriented sciences such as optimization, statistics, and system analysis and identification that are sorely in need of methods comparable to those related here for classical numerical analysis problems. Toward uncovering for the reader the structure of numerical methods we have, for example, devoted a chapter to a metric space theory for iter­ ative application of operators. In this chapter, we have collected those definitions and concepts of real and functional analysis that are requisite to a modern intermediate-level exposition of the principles of numerical anal­ ysis. Further, we derive the abstract theory (most notably, the contraction mapping theorem) for iteration processes.

    The theory of controlled processes is one of the most recent mathematical theories to show very important applications in modern engineering, parti­ cularly for constructing automatic control systems, as well as for problems of economic control. However, actual systems subject to control do not admit a strictly deterministic analysis in view of random factors of various kinds which influence their behavior. Such factors include, for example, random noise occurring in the electrical system, variations in the supply and demand of commodities, fluctuations in the labor force in economics, and random failures of components on an automated line. The theory of con­ trolled processes takes the random nature of the behavior of a system into account. In such cases it is natural, when choosing a control strategy, to proceed from the average expected result, taking note of all the possible variants of the behavior of a controlled system.     The first course in analysis which follows elementary calculus is a critical one for students who are seriously interested in mathematics.     Beginning in 1983, the Swedish Council for Planning and Coordination of Research has organized an annual workshop devoted to some aspect of the behavior and modeling of complex systems. These workshops have been held at the Abisko Research Station of the Swedish Academy of Sciences, a remote location far above the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden. During the period of the midnight sun, from May 4-8, 1987 this exotic venue served as the gathering place for a small group of scientists, scholars, and other connoisseurs of the unknown to ponder the problem of how to model "living systems," a term singling out those systems whose principal components are living agents. The 1987 Abisko Workshop focused primarily upon the general system-theoretic concepts of process, function, and form. In particular, a main theme of the Workshop was to examine how these concepts are actually realized in biological, economic, and linguistic situations. As the Workshop unfolded, it became increasingly evident that the central concern of the participants was directed to the matter of how those quintessential aspects of living systems-metabolism, self-repair, and replication-might be brought into contact with the long-established modeling paradigms employed in physics, chemistry, and engineering.

    This outline of statistics as an aid in decision making will introduce a reader with limited mathematical background to the most important modern statistical methods. This is a revised and enlarged version, with major extensions and additions, of my "Angewandte Statistik" (5th ed.), which has proved useful for research workers and for consulting statisticians. Applied statistics is at the same time a collection of applicable statistical methods and the application of these methods to measured and/or counted observations. Abstract mathematical concepts and derivations are avoided. Special emphasis is placed on the basic principles of statistical formulation, and on the explanation of the conditions under which a certain formula or a certain test is valid. Preference is given to consideration of the analysis of small sized samples and of distribution-free methods. As a text and reference this book is written for non-mathematicians, in particular for technicians, engineers, executives, students, physicians as well as researchers in other disciplines. It gives any mathematician interested in the practical uses of statistics a general account of the subject. Practical application is the main theme; thus an essential part of the book consists in the 440 fully worked-out numerical examples, some of which are very simple; the 57 exercises with solutions; a number of different compu­ tational aids; and an extensive bibliography and a very detailed index. In particular, a collection of 232 mathematical and mathematical-statistical tables serves to enable and to simplify the computations.

    This book is based on lectures given at Yale in 1971-1981 to students prepared with a course in measure-theoretic probability. It contains one technical innovation-probability distributions in which the total probability is infinite. Such improper distributions arise embarras­ singly frequently in Bayes theory, especially in establishing correspondences between Bayesian and Fisherian techniques. Infinite probabilities create interesting complications in defining conditional probability and limit concepts. The main results are theoretical, probabilistic conclusions derived from probabilistic assumptions. A useful theory requires rules for constructing and interpreting probabilities. Probabilities are computed from similarities, using a formalization of the idea that the future will probably be like the past. Probabilities are objectively derived from similarities, but similarities are sUbjective judgments of individuals. Of course the theorems remain true in any interpretation of probability that satisfies the formal axioms. My colleague David Potlard helped a lot, especially with Chapter 13.     An English translation now joins the Russian and Spanish versions. It is based on the newly revised fifth edition of the German version of the book. The original edition has become very popular as a learning and reference source with easy to follow recipes and cross references for scientists in fields such as engineering, chemistry and the life sciences. Little mathematical background is required of the reader and some important topics, like the logarithm, are dealt with in the preliminaries preceding chapter one. The usefulness of the book as a reference is enhanced by a number of convenient tables and by references to other tables and methods, both in the text and in the bibliography. The English edition contains more material than the German original. I am most grateful to all who have in conversations, letters or reviews suggested improvements in or criticized earlier editions. Comments and suggestions will continue to be welcome.     Like many other scientists, I have long been interested in history. I enjoy reading about the minutiae of its daily unfolding: the coinage, food, clothes, games, literature and habits which characterize a people. I am carried away by the broad sweep of its major events: the wars, famines, migrations, reforms, political swings and scientific advances which shape a society. I know that historians value autobiographical accounts as part of the basic material from which the stuff of history is distilled; this should apply no less to statistical than to political or social history. Modem statistics is a relatively young science; it was while pondering this fact sometime in 1980 that I realized that many of the pioneers of our field could still be called upon to tell their stories. If, however, biographical material about these eminent statisticians was not gathered, then one might lose the chance to gain insight into the origins of many an important statistical development. The remarkable experience of these colleagues could not be readily duplicated. Fired by these thoughts, I took it upon myself to plan the framework of this book. In it, eminent statisticians (probabilists are included under this title) would be invited to sketch their lives, explain how they had become interested in probability and· statistics, give an account of their major contributions, and possibly hazard some predictions about the future of the subject.

    Probability measures on algebraic-topological structures such as topological semi­ groups, groups, and vector spaces have become of increasing importance in recent years for probabilists interested in the structural aspects of the theory as well as for analysts aiming at applications within the scope of probability theory. In order to obtain a natural framework for a first systematic presentation of the most developed part of the work done in the field we restrict ourselves to prob­ ability measures on locally compact groups. In analogy to the classical theory the discussion is centered around the infinitely divisible probability measures on the group and their relationship to the convergence of infinitesimal triangular systems.

    In this book I have attempted to trace the development of numerical analysis during the period in which the foundations of the modern theory were being laid. To do this I have had to exercise a certain amount of selectivity in choosing and in rejecting both authors and papers. I have rather arbitrarily chosen, in the main, the most famous mathematicians of the period in question and have concentrated on their major works in numerical analysis at the expense, perhaps, of other lesser known but capable analysts. This selectivity results from the need to choose from a large body of literature, and from my feeling that almost by definition the great masters of mathematics were the ones responsible for the most significant accomplishments. In any event I must accept full responsibility for the choices. I would particularly like to acknowledge my thanks to Professor Otto Neugebauer for his help and inspiration in the preparation of this book.
