Die zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts aus Arzneipflanzen isolierten Alkaloide waren hochwirksame Stoffe und zugleich Modelle für die Entwicklung synthetischer Arzneistoffe. Morphin, 1804/05 von Friedrich Wilhelm Sertürner (1783–1841) als erstes Alkaloid entdeckt, ist ein starkes Schmerzmittel (Analgetikum). Seine Entdeckungsgeschichte kann anhand der hier abgedruckten und erläuterten Veröffentlichungen Sertürners minutiös nachverfolgt werden. Morphin zeigte als Wirkstoff des Opiums (principium somniferum) eine schlafbringende Wirkung) und Sertürner stellte fest, dass es sich bei diesem Stoff um eine Pflanzenbase (Alkaloid) handelt. Heroische Selbstversuche zeigten, dass bereits mit geringsten Mengen eine große Wirkung erzeugt werden kann. Das Buch schildert Leben und Werk Sertürners. Er gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Apotheker des 18./19. Jahrhunderts, der mit seiner Morphin-Entdeckung ein neues Forschungsgebiet begründete und den Weg in die moderne Arzneimittelforschung wies.

This two-volume set of LNCS 12736-12737 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Security, ICAIS 2021, which was held in Dublin, Ireland, in July 2021. This book presents both updated and new measurements on water resources from selective pilot areas form the Middle East. Demand for water has become very crucial notably in arid and semiarid regions like in the Middle East. The changing climate and the increased population are the most striking challenges on water resources in this region where the largest part of its territory is dry lands and deserts with minimal precipitation and high evaporation rates, and thus, the average per capita of water does not exceed 25 m3/year. This resulted in developing many studies and researches in different Middle East countries to clearly identify and assess the hydrological characteristics of the available water resources and to explore new resources in order to secure balanced water supply/demand.

This book presents topics that are challenging fields that scientific world is trying to address as much as it can. Earthquakes, floods, fires, droughts, blizzards, dust storms, natural releases of toxic gases and liquids, diseases, and other environmental variations affect hundreds of millions of people each year.
