João Parahyba released his first album in 14 years, Mangundi, this Friday, the 31st. A mix, a "madness," as he himself describes it, based on almost 60 years of musical experience, from when he started frequenting the Jogral bar, a haven for São Paulo musicians, to becoming one of the most celebrated names in the world, with collaborations with hundreds of other geniuses in the art of "transmitting feelings to the soul."

Besides the new album (which we've already heard and fallen in love with), João also promises the return of Trio Mocotó to the stage: “I don't like being alone on stage. I'm a tribal guy.”

João Parahyba is the Brazilian percussionist/drummer/creator who has most embraced electronic music in the country. He became close friends with the renowned music producer Mitar Subotić, aka Suba, with whom he had a relationship from when the Serbian moved to São Paulo until his death in 1999, a victim of a fire in his studio. Mitar is honored on the new album, as is everyone who, in one way or another, has been part of the great Parahyba's life.

Between laughs and digressions, the 75-year-old musician spoke with us from his home. It would be worth a week of conversation, with so many stories the man has to tell: “I talk a lot, you know, Jota?” And he really did. Only good things.
