During Coltrane’s Atlantic years, he made important recordings such as "Giant Steps" and "My Favorite Things", recorded albums with Milt Jackson, Don Cherry, and Eric Dolphy and made his debut on the soprano saxophone. The Penguin Guide to Jazz assigned its 'Crown' award to the box set, in addition to giving it a four-star rating (of a possible four).

The Modern Jazz Quartet plays a selection of original compositions and riveting standards on their release, "The Sheriff". The album is infused with Latin and bossa nova rhythms. The work features four pieces by pianist John Lewis, including the blues-driven title track and the hauntingly beautiful “In a Crowd”. The quartet also performs works by Heitor Villa-Lobos (“Bachianas Brasileiras”) and Luiz Bonfa (“Carnival”). The quartet’s rich melodies and harmonious playing are strong and compelling.

This album, not released until 1956, contains the first recordings Sonny Rollins made for Prestige as leader in 1951 and 1953. Rollins is backed on four songs by the Modern Jazz Quartet (John Lewis, Milt Jackson, Percy Heath and Kenny Clarke), eight other tracks feature Heath with Kenny Drew and Art Blakey, while Miles Davis plays piano on the closing number I Know. Several of these songs appeared in 1952 on 10 inch vinyl entitled Sonny Rollins Quartet.

When Wes Montgomery made his first amazing impact on the New York jazz scene at the end of the 1950s, a great many established stars actively sought to record with him. Milt Jackson was one of the few for whom the guitarist felt an equal affinity. For one thing, they shared a strong love for the blues; and Wes had learned, through years of playing with his brother Buddy, to value the vibes/guitar sound. To support this memorable meeting of thoroughly compatible jazz masters, Riverside assembled one of the most cohesive recording rhythm sections of its day: Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones, and Philly Joe Jones.

"Wizard of the Vibes" was recorded in several sessions between 1948 and 1952, and is a compilation of performances by vibraphonist Milt Jackson. It features performances of his playing with The Thelonious Monk Quintet and The Modern Jazz Quartet plus Lou Donaldson.

This 1956 release features Miles Davis backed by an all-star group including vibraphonist Milt Jackson who shares co-billing, Jackie McLean on alto saxophone on his two original contributions, pianist Ray Bryant, bassist Percy Heath and drummer Art Taylor. In addition to McLean's two songs, the rest of the programme contains Ray Bryant's "Changes" and "Bitty Ditty", written by Thad Jones.

"Genius of Modern Music, Volume One" is an electrifying compilation highlighting the innovations of Thelonious Monk. The album features early Monk compositions that ultimately transformed into jazz standards. Guest musicians include Art Blakey, Milt Jackson, Gene Ramey, Sahib Shihab, John Simmons, Billy Smith, Shadow Wilson, Danny Quebec West and George Taitt. It includes the classic tunes “Well You Needn’t” and “In Walked Bud”. "Genius of Modern Music Volume One" is listed on Q’s “Best Jazz Albums of All Time” and Vibe’s “100 Essential Albums of the 20th Century”.

Milton "Bags" Jackson was an American jazz vibraphonist, usually thought of as a bebop player, although he performed in several jazz idioms. He is one of the most acclaimed improvisational blues instrumentalists of all time and was a founding member of the legendary Modern Jazz Quartet. Milt Jackson was voted by Down Beat s readers into its Jazz Hall of Fame in 1999. Recorded over two days in December of 1972 at Rudy Van Gelder's Englewood, New Jersey home studio, vibraphonist Milt Jackson's Sunflower is the first (and best) of his three albums for Creed Taylor's CTI imprint.

Pianist Oscar Peterson joins up with his old friends, vibraphonist Milt Jackson and bassist Ray Brown, in addition to his drummer of the period, Louis Hayes, for a particularly enjoyable outing. After a throwaway version of the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," the all-star quartet performs Jackson's title cut, Benny Carter's ballad "Dream of You," and four standards. Although not up to the excitement of Peterson's best Pablo recordings of the 1970s, this is an enjoyable album.

Vibraphonist Milt Jackson, pianist John Lewis, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Kenny Clarke were all veterans of Dizzy Gillespie's big band when they decided to dedicate themselves to the cooperative venture of the Modern Jazz Quartet. This compilation brings together material from 1952 to 1955, culled from recordings originally done for the Prestige label, and it shows both the gestation of the group and its early accomplishments.

"Django", originally released in 1956 and features some of the best playing by The Modern Jazz Quintet in their discography. The album's sessions took place between 1953 and 1955, mostly recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Hackensack, New Jersey. All original tunes are by John Lewis, and the album also includes a few songs by Dizzy Gillespie and George & Ira Gershwin.
