The second half of the 17th century in Vienna coincided with the reign of Emperor Leopold I (1658–1705). The city was an important and influential music centre with its own tradition and musical practice. Through the connections to Italy and to smaller centres within the Habsburg Empire, it was also a melting pot of different musical styles and influences. These elements, that developed fully in the representational genres of church music and theatre, can be observed also in the
harpsichord compositions.
