Kate Bollinger presents Songs From A Thousand Frames Of Mind (Deluxe), an expanded tracklist introducing a new song and several takes on material from her kaleidoscopic full-length debut. Released in 2024 to widespread acclaim and a year full of international touring, the album found the Virginia-born, Los Angeles-based songwriter blending classic pop songcraft with covert punk instincts, citing a wide range of inspiration from ’60s icons like Françoise Hardy and the Velvet Underground to ’90s touchpoints like Pavement and the Elephant 6 Collective. The result was a collage-like vision akin to flipping through your coolest friend’s record collection. Now, that surveying view widens to offer fans a few more frames of mind as the Songs era comes to an end.

On the Songs deluxe, Bollinger revisits past work from slightly different angles. “I wanted to make some more kind of home-recorded versions of the songs. Bring them closer to what they were when I first wrote them,” she adds. For “Any Day Now”, she and co-producer Jackson MacIntosh (Sheer Agony, TOPS, Homeshake) recorded a more sparse and intimate cassette 4-track version. A jangle-pop gem in its album form, the track is reimagined with layers of acoustic guitars and a barely-there snare drum.

On the contrary, the deluxe version of “Lonely” is more lush than the original, featuring a string section that was arranged and conducted by Trey Pollard during Bollinger’s recent visit to Spacebomb, the Richmond studio run by Matthew E. White, a close friend and collaborator of hers from home. “I just happened to be passing through Virginia a few months ago, and I'd always imagined strings on this song…” she explains. The demo of “In A Smile” was recorded with White at a park in Los Angeles in 2022, back when the song was first being written.

In the time since Songs’ release, Bollinger has begun taking ballet lessons, and the melody to the new song “You’re A Dancer” came to her one spring day after a lesson. “It was just a funny little song, one of many, that I mindlessly started singing to myself around the house. I worked out the chords on guitar and recorded it on GarageBand. It can be nice to chip away at something and really perfect it, but recently I've preferred the immediacy of writing and recording these mini songs all in one sitting. My friend Gabe said it feels 'mainlined'. They're how I intended them to be in the moment I wrote them, with the only limitations really being lack of technical skill and gear."

The back-to-basics, self-recorded approach for “You’re A Dancer”, an earworm that ought to far outlive its 49-second runtime, is refreshing for Bollinger, who has made her name as a world-building artist and collaborator. In the coming months, she has plans to record her next album and will be going on her first tour of Australia and New Zealand in January 2026.
