Singer and songwriter Monica Pereira has had a varied background: born in Guinea-Bissau with a childhood spent in Portugal and an adolescence in Paris, her diverse musical influences abound in her album "Mulher Do Sol", a 14 track effort featuring appearances from Debademba, Sidiki Diabaté, and Fatim Diabaté.

Janis Steprans is a saxophonist, composer and educator from Montréal, Canada. Ajivtal is his sixth release and first with the quintet format. The title track is inspired by a composition entitled Airegin by saxophonist Theodore "Sonny" Rollins. An exotic motif in Ajivtal evokes Russian, Middle Eastern and Jewish music, a reflection of Steprans's own origins and musical influences, paying homage to the country of his ancestors, Latvija.

Part twee folk, part ratty punk, California duo Harmony Tividad and Cleo Tucker make music that’s nostalgic for 90s riot grrrl outfits like the Breeders, while also effusing millennial ennui; Magnifying Glass, from their 2015 debut LP, "Before the World Was Big", was 39 frantic seconds of string-plucking and lyrics about wanting to hold the world inside your head, while early single "Blah Blah Blah" was mostly built around those three words, delivered in a mocking tone. This new record builds on the latent disquiet that bubbles under the surface of Girlpool’s nonchalance. Despite the addition of a full band, it still manages to sound like a collection of lullabies. With only two songs passing the three-minute mark, this is blink-and-you’ll-miss-it angst, but deserving of your attention nonetheless.

Rescued from the vaults: "Live At Zardi's" is the Verve Records' first live recording, and is being heard for the first time anywhere. The two sets from the evening, in front of a lively crowd, was captured February 2, 1956, a few days before Ella began recording Verve’s first album, "Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Cole Porter Song Book".
