On June 28, 1986, in front of 80,000 fans at London's Wembley Stadium, Wham! put an end to their four-year run. Without a trace of tears, George and Andrew took the first step that day to go their separate ways.
Though their four-year run was short, the two actually met back in 1975. Of the 11 years since they first met, only four years were the Wham! that everyone knew, while the remaining seven were the Wham! that only George and Andrew knew. We tend to say it was only four years, but for the two of them, Wham! was a youth they shared not only with music, but also friendship, frustration, glory, and romance, from their mischievous youth to the present day. So, George and Andrew must have had mixed feelings as they left Wham! to stand on their own two feet. Torn between a sense of duty to set off on a journey and the loneliness of not wanting to leave their warm nest…
Through Wham!, George and Andrew accomplished everything a pop group should. They were considered the glorious pop stars of the '60s (the Beatles), the '70s (BCR), and the '80s (Wham!), producing countless pop hits hummed by people of all ages around the world. Sales of Wham! merchandise, including records, cassettes, Wham! dolls, and T-shirts, have set music history records. In addition to their business success, Wham! toured China in April 1985 as a musical mission, generating significant social buzz. Of course, their concerts in Beijing and Guangdong were a huge success. Wham! inspired big dreams for Chinese people, who rarely had the chance to hear live pop music. One of the catalysts for this China tour was the arrival of "Careless Whisper" through imports, which reached the ears of Chinese music professionals and became a huge hit when a Chinese singer sang it. Five versions of "Careless Whisper"—four in Cantonese and one in Mandarin—were simultaneously huge hits. This naturally led to a desire to learn more about Wham!, the band's original song.
As a result, Wham!'s sound reached mainland China for the first time, albeit on cassette. The Wham! fans who sought out the cassettes were reportedly young people between the ages of 12 and 25. This alone created a huge social phenomenon, but George and Andrew went on to successfully tour China. The video you're seeing now is a recording of that event. It not only captures the concert, but also their travelogue-style documentary of China. You'll also enjoy a glimpse into the real lives of George and Andrew. This video, "Foreign Skies," was first shown on the day of the band's final concert. Now, it can be seen by Wham! fans all over the world.
The China performance was a huge challenge for George and Andrew, so please cherish this video, which captures everything, along with your memories of Wham!, as a treasured memory.
