Percy Faith - Music Of Christmas (1959/2021) [Official Digital Download 24/96]

This is THE great album of iconic, classic Christmas instrumentals. No doubt at some point in the past half century or so you've heard at least a few of Percy Faith's renditions of Christmas music standards, and listening to this album you will instantly recognize them. There's a good reason that this recording is ubiquitous: they capture the sound of the Christmas season with near perfection, and even in the jaded 21st caentury, they for the most part song timeless. What lessens the experience with this particular reissue of this album is the very sloppy, indifferent mastering job done by Columbia. You don't have to get too far into the CD to realize this; the very opening notes of the first track, Joy to the World, are cut off, as if the apprentice engineer who was making the digital transfer was asleep when the tape began running… and no one at Columbia actually gave enough of a damn to fix it! Aside from this, junior the engineer must have also selected a master used for running cassettes or eight tracks, since this is a very compressed and out of balance recording, whIle LP copies are far, far, better-sounding than this. In any event, the music is still wonderful and enjoyable despite the third-rate technical quality of the CD. Hopefully someone at Sony-BMG will one day wake up and do a proper remaster of this wonderful album.
